Spring Crown Tournament of the Middle Kingdom 2022 | SCA Midrealm Heavy Combat Fight Finals

Welcome to the Spring Crown Tournament of the Middle Kingdom, which is an event held twice a year to determine who the new Heirs are to the Dragon Throne by fighting in heavy combat with swords, shields, spears, bucklers, and other weapons. The winner of the tournament and their consort become the new Prince and Princess for 6 months and then, after their Coronation, become King and Queen for 6 months. After their reign as King and Queen for 6 months, they will step down and the new heirs will step up.

New to the SCA and trying to learn…can you explain why they were on their knees around 4:40?

Sure! At about 3:39 in the video, the fighter on the right (in green) hit the fighter on the left on the upper left thigh, which is known as a leg shot. There can be discussions with fighters if a shot like this is good or not based on if it was flat (think of being hit with the flat part of a sword instead of the sharp edge) or if the fighter receiving the blow thought it was light or tippy. Since the fighter in black immediately went down to his knees at 3:39, that means that he acknowledged it as a good leg hit. This means he has taken a blow to the leg and must now fight from his knees. So, he's not out of the fight, as it's not a kill shot - but he is now limited with his range. At about 3:49, the fighter in black also did a leg shot to the fighter in green, which then resulted in the discussion about the shot before the fighter in green went down on his knees at about 4:19. From here on out, both fighters must fight from their knees until one has delivered a kill shot and has thus won the match. From their knees, a rap shot to the head is a typical way to best your opponent (in my opinion) when both fighters have a sword and shield. Hope this helps!
