Fall Crown Tournament 2023 | SCA Armored Combat Tourney of the Midrealm

Welcome to the Fall Crown Tournament of the Middle Kingdom, which is an event held twice a year to determine who the new Heirs are to the Dragon Throne by fighting in armoured combat (informally known as heavy combat) with swords, shields, spears, bucklers, and other weapons. The winner of the tournament and their consort become the new Prince and Princess for approximately 6 months and then, after their Coronation, become King and Queen for approximately 6 months. After their reign as King and Queen, they will step down and the new heirs will step up.

Honestly? The comradery. I know it's not the same in every kingdom but when I joined mine everyone was so friendly and willing to help out.

I like your answer. And it's visible as a spectator to see when the fighters are friendly and having fun doing what they enjoy doing with their friends. This, for me, makes it enjoyable to watch the fights!

@@LynneFairchild It's the culture I feel. Not many sports literally how competitors to stop and talk about what happened and to trust that what they're saying is truthful. Honorable. It's honestly awesome.

It’s interesting watching this after seeing a small demonstration on Vikings using shield and sword. They showed having the shield close to body and sword out in front. I keep seeing these guys attack and come back to the shoulder behind the shield. Is the armor any reason for that or is it just how they choose to fight?

Different fighters fight differently. Within the SCA, there are rules as for what is and is not allowed (you want to safely give your friend a killing shot without the intent to actually do them bodily harm). All that said, I think having the sword come back to the shoulder is for a few reasons. Depending on where the sword is, it could be in a position to protect and block blows from the opponent (like shielding their head). If the opponent is far away and not currently engaging, resting the sword on your shoulder may simply give your arm a break (Crown Tourney can be an all afternoon day of fighting for some fighters. Best not to use up everything in the tank on the first round of fighting.)

It's difficult to say who came in 3rd because this is fought like a bracket system (semi-finals with 4 fighters remaining and the 2 who win go into the finals).

hmm.. i feel that this is a lil far from armed armoured combat(with swords) the guys are useing em like clubs(what they r i guess) and not like swords. maybe a bigger battle with heavily armoured wud like sumthin like this.. but specially a duel?.. i dont see the least bit of training or skill, other then what anyone cud do without training.. reminds me of pillow fights tbh lol

Actually, a fair bit of training goes into fighting (years). A fighter must be trained and authorized to fight. There are rules too to learn, like what would be a killing blow and what actions are not allowed. Fighters are here to fight with their friends, not to try to intentionally hurt them. That said, they are fighting with rattan. So, definitely not pillows. Over the years, specifically at events such as Pennsic, I have seen various injuries that sometimes required a hospital stay and/or surgery. So, again, definitely not pillows. Yes, this is true, which is why in the real Middle Ages they began to use mace and battle axe and hammers. Swords are ineffective against armor. This same Organisation has much more realistic duel battles. Look up SCA cut and thrust or saber and rapier duels. Those are most accurate in my opinion.

Please go put some armor on and get back to me. I have been training for over 30 years and even trained athletes are helpless when fighting for several years before they learn the ranging and different weapon styles.
