It's a good idea to qualify this kind of seasonal information by adding your location and recommendations for weather conditions when this can be done. It's way too early to feed liquid where we are in the Northeast U.S. It was 17°F again last night and will barely reach the 50s during the daytime for a while. Thanks!

Excellent point about watching for hive beetles. But that is a symptom of a weak queen.great job enjoy watching your videos.

What about feeders shaped like frames with plastic “ladders” in the holes? Are they good?

I am in South Florida and I did 1 to 1 ratio and within a few days mold had developed floating on top. I threw that out and cleaned the feeder and then did the 5 to 3 ratio which is doing really great.

Thank you for the comment! Warm, humid climates are tricky. Did you add Pro health or some kind of supplement ot it? That usually extends the lifespan of the syrup by quite a bit. Is the ratio 5 parts water to 3 parts sugar or the other way around?

I usually feed my overwintered bees 🐝 in early spring when the crocuses are starting to come out.

I am facing serious issue There was almost 14 frame population in single double chamber hives. There was space for bees but bees took swarm out of 10 boxes 5 swarm occured. So now we are again feeding According to you what should be the feeding ratio for spring? temp 37C here.... how we can bost our colony again to get best yield of honey

Sorry to hear about your bees! Spring time, you want a 1:1 ratio of sugar to water to not only feed the bees but also encourage them to be more active, build comb and get the queen to lay more. This is because it is similar to nectar which has a lot of water in it. You want the bees to think there is nectar coming into the hive. No more than 50% sugar though. Or else it won't seem like nectar to them. 2 parts sugar to 1 part water is better later in the summer or early fall when you want to give the bees food and use less energy to turn it into "fake honey" so to speak.

This video was very helpful! We are looking to start a hive next spring in northern Michigan (not the UP) and we are trying to learn as much as we can before we pull that plug. One question I have is, should you aim for at least 2 brood boxes? And the. Start adding supers?

Most beekeepers in the U.S. put 2 brood boxes on the hive and then add honey supers/shallow boxes. What the bees will do in these boxes is up to them! Usually, the first brood box will be mostly brood and 1-3 frames of honey and pollen. The second brood box can vary. Some queens are VERY active and will fill this second box up with brood too. Some hives are quick to gather honey and this box will be half brood half honey or mostly honey. It's fine either way. Here in Hawaii, I have just 1 brood box. It's the way most beekeepers here run things. It doesn't matter much for the bees. They usually fill up the first honey super with half brood and half honey. But when preparing your hive for winter, it can be easier if you have 2 deeps and then honey supers above. Personally, I like to keep my equipment light, so I like using honey supers because if the bees fill that second brood box with honey, it's pretty heavy.

These people are in a warm climate. You should get your info from people in the snowbelt. Very different timing for seasonal actions in cold climes vs warm.

Aloha, in hawaii do you usually only have 1 brood box let them build 7 or 8 frames then add the honey super? And when you harvest the honey do you usually take all the honey in the super or do you save a frame or 2 for the bees?

Yes, here in HI it's common for people to have just 1 brood box and the rest are honey supers. Usually, the 1st honey super is half brood and half honey. I leave the first 2 boxes for the bees (sometimes 3 boxes if needed) and take the rest.

HELP. Im new at this. Last week I put out a bucket with lid upside down so they dont drown with 1 to 1 sugar and the bees loved it. A few days ago I refilled it and today there are hundreds of dead bees within a few feet of the water bucket and maybe 100 dead bees outside one of the hives. Does anybody know why this is?

in my opinion it is pointless to heat any more than what it takes to dissolve sugar. They will drink water from anywhere from pools to septic ponds so sterilizing is not an issue.

Good point! I've found that the sugar dissolves faster when you boil the water, but you don't have to bring it to boiling point. Making it hot enough to dissolve the sugar is good enough. You just want to make sure the sugar is fully dissolved and not falling down to the bottom of the jar.

Unfortunately, that's beekeeping and nature. I've told students before, if you want to know exact measurements and have a specific date to go by every year, beekeeping is not the hobby for you.

I used to bring my water to a boil when making sugar syrup until I found out it contributes to producing hydroxymethylfurfural, although a natural occurring organic acid, is toxic to bees.
