Thanks Jeff! I got around 100 garlic cloves planted in the fall and they all sprouted out quite well ( 98% ). I use a Soil Activator product which consists of microbial biofertilizer containing a blend of naturally occurring soil microorganisms and a natural forestry by-product. I have taken note of your grass cuttings as well. Have a great spring ahead!

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms Hi Jeff, I had my garlic in 5 containers and 5 grow bags, they all also looked great before winter. Last month I found the garlic in 2 grow bags and 1 container were all dead (I did soil prep very well in these things). I looked into them and the bulbs disappeared, only some brown leaves left. In another containers that had 11 bulbs now has only 3 growing. But the rest of my garlic seems growing fine, the leaves are beautifully green. Trying to follow your example of soil prep, I did the soil prep well in all of these containers and grow bags except one container (I forgot to put in the mixture of fertilizer and minerals until later after tiny green shoots started showing up and looked poor, but now this container seems doing fine.) One thing I didn't do: mulch. Because the straw that I used at first had a lot of weed seeds so I had to pull it all out of my containers. I am wondering if the garlic that went dead got froze from the winter and because those garlic cloves weren't strong enough (Chesnok from Mexico, and Music). I am preparing several straw bales for my next year garlic by exposing them to the sun and rain and let nature kill all the weed seeds and wash away all chemicals in them. I will mulch all my garlic crop next year! Thanks for all your valuable advice. We love watching you! Cheers. 🙂

Fantastic info from someone with 15 years of experience. He should know! And i really am happy to see how many people are getting ibto garlic. I ordered several different kinds. First time getting garlic seed/cloves of any particular kind. Wow! Lots of different kinds! The Alaska Extension Office (or whatever), listed sevearl different types and said how they worked in our state. Fun to try, if it is within your opportunity.

When I was looking at my garlic plants the other day I found where my delinquent squirrel had used the area for burying its stash. I put a tulle canopy cover over the garlic and also watered it with the compost tea I make. We've gotten lots of rain lately so doubt they'll need any more water from me for a while. Fingers crossed for my garlic plants this year.

Great video breddah!! So in March, I found a sprouted cluster of volunteers in a patch I grew years ago. I , of course pulled it up, gently separated it, and replanted in another bed. Its late May now, and the experiment continues! They look great, have 4 leaves on most. We shall see in the fall if this worked out! Too funny to find that bit in your video on how it shouldn’t work c Ill be sure to ket you know the outcome!

This is encouraging to me! Prior to watching this video today…two weeks ago I found that my garlic from last year had clumped up…so teased them apart and replanted them 4 inches apart in 4x4 sq. I had extras and gave them to a friend to plant as well. Time will tell if we’re successful! 😂

I planted my garlic and onions in the fall. Sorry to say, only a couple look like they might survive. In zone 5 we had some weather fluctuations. Freeze and thaw. My bulbs pushed up and I'll have to try again. I bought some red onion bulbs to put in their place. I really love garlic. But, if at first as they say, you don't succeed, try, try again. Hi Jeff, this year was my first time trying garlic...looks like I planted waaaay too late...i just planted them this past Feb in zone 7A (NorthEast). I only planted 3 cloves to see what would happen and all 3 have sprouted...1 is about 2.5 tall and the other 2 are about a half inch. I left the others in the freezer to preserve them first a later time....should I just leave the planted ones in the container until next summer (2023)😄....not sure what to do at this point now that I've just watched your video🤭...thanks, your videos has definitely helped me to understand gardening a lot better👍💖

Hi Rochelle, I would leave them in place. Spring-planted garlic can most definitely produce a bulb in northern climates. They'll just be smaller and less productive harvests. Still tasty though.

Sorry Jeff quick question, I added two more raised beds this year. No dig style as you did a video on. Card board as a base, then wood chip, followed by compost, and a top layer of peak moss n my left over potting soil mixed with organic fertilizer, well here is my question, I threw some Brussels and basil in one today and the mix seems really loose. The main reason I built these new bed was for tomato n peppers, I'm worried the soil won't be solid enough to carry the plants. Thx Timothy

It's the plants that make the soil profile solid. That's what the roots do. Loose soil is good, the plants will take care of the rest!

I got an iron raised bed from my dad. And I used it for radish last 2 months. And I'm thinking of using it for garlic upcoming oktober. Especially considering that I'll have better control over the soil and everything growing on it since garlics don't really seem to like the soil of my garden much: I live near the river so it's riverclay and the top layer is pretty sandy, there's also a lot of biodiversity in my garden which is probably just too much competition. Last year the garlics also showed me that the roots struggled to get deep enough which is because the soil gets very strong and compressed deeper down. But anyway back to the subject of my iron raised bed. A problem I have with growing garlic in it, is that I can’t grow anything else in it until June/July, which is a pretty long time. This especially would be unfortunate for my Raddish. I really like using it for Raddish. Does Raddish grow well in the type of soil of my garden? And will the seeds even germinate in a sandy toplayer? Because most seeds struggle to do so. (except for the seeds from my neighbors tree and native plants for whatever reason.)

Definitely you could grow radishes in it. Even peas and spinach as well. Or try a cover crop like alfalfa or rye. Growing something, anything will condition the soil and make it better and better. I'd for sure grow something over summer before planting the garlic. It'll greatly increase your chances of success. 🙂

Look up how to build up your soil naturally. By using compost, natural things like leaves & seaweed, &c., you can build a better growing medium. Do look up online how to build up your soil. It will really make a difference as you go along. It may be just a little at a time and/or a slow start, but it will still be progress. I live where every fall we gather seaweed off the beach and collect the fall leaves for the garden. We put on a layer of each and leave it all winter. Here we get so much rain we cover the beds in the winter to keep it from leaching out nutrients. Spring comes, and you can spade it in the leaves/seaweed. Of course it could be spaded in whenever.

I had to take out the mulch of my garlic beds. It brought white flies and was staying too wet. Lost most of my garlic. The ones that made it through are doing a lot better without the mulch.

@@TheRipeTomatoFarms I used hay as mulch, but I took that off. Now I have no mulch. I've just been keeping a close eye on them and been watering less and giving them food. They still occasionally get the flies so then I back off on the water for a bit. I just tried planting some more garlic in the spots that didn't make it today, because I only had two plants that survived. This is my first time gardening, so I'm just looking at it as an experiment now. Then practice what I learned this year for next year. I'm in Texas so that might have played into it. I just started following someone in California and she mulched on the bottom. So I'm trying that on some other plants. We shall see. 😊

Really enjoyed this garlic video. I yes I am now following you 👍 Okay here comes the questions. I’ve been growing garlic for the last 5 or 6 years and last November added a new bed. This July I’m hoping to harvest around 600 bulbs. First question I’m wondering how to find out what zone I am in. My zip code is 01373 in western Ma. This spring I want to fertilize my beds which for me will be the first time doing so. I’m trying to figure out when to start doing this. I am going out to buy the fertilizer you suggest today. I’m also going to do some research to answer my above questions. Thanks again for the five tips in this video and any other advice is welcomed. I have a few that came up with double top greens. I clipped the weaker ones off each one but they’re just growing back again. Anything I should do differently? I’ve noticed in the past that the ones with split tops produce a dinky bulb.

I live in Alaska and day temp is 48 / 55 , night is 34, will be getting warmer in May. I uncovered my garlic bulbs and shallots , so the soil would heat up a bit, should I lightly water if dry on top, sunny for Three days and back to clouds later in the week , and I noticed you have yours covered in straw she I put back on later in spring when it gets warmer? Hi there, well we have had so much rain it does get me somewhat concerned about my garlic going rotten because I see the long stems going a little yellow (I am in south east England(UK), we really did not experience a good spring, but some spring like weather is now here with a little sunny and warmer weather that has contained rain again. I have fed the garlic with seaweed fertilizer every so many three to four weeks and also some months earlier loaded on some hay straw. My thought were that if I purchase hay straw that is normal feed for pet rabbits, it will not contain anything that would harm them and straw from some other sources could and although all we can do, is but ask the supplier, who says they just tell us what they know we would like to hear! Have you ever grown Elephant garlic, the very large type that I seem to read that is very much more milder and said to be more like a leek? How are you getting on and feeling about your weather then? some of my garlic plants are doing while while other the stems and leaves are dying into nothing. i was going to pull them up but noticed the little clove turned into a small ball. should i remove the plant or let it stay and see if it still grows?

I use agrothrive, i think it’s 3-3-3. What do you think of that? Also, I used leaves and shredded wood for winter mulch instead of straw since it is so available here in NH. I removed half of it in the recently ( late April). Plants are 10-12 inches tall and looking good.

Hi, going into autumn here, going to plant my garlic this weekend. I would like to plant a living mulch, any suggestions? I was thinking of a herb like thyme. My winters go down to 4 deg Celsius, with no snow or frost so the living mulch will grow until garlic harvesting time. Thanks for another great video!

You can feed them. As long as its not through 2 feet of snow, there's no harm in a light dose.

Yup, that's normal and expected. Garlic is a 9 month crop.

I planted my garlic in the fall and I saw them sprouting soon. Then winter came and a ton of snow. Now into spring and no signs of any garlic growing, but the last spring frost date is May 8th. Do I wait to see if it comes up or is it possible froze out? I’m sad😩😢. Lol

Normally it's ok, even if they sprout early. It's not the cold that kills them.. It's the moisture that wicks down the early shoots..... I'd just dig up a test sample and see for yourself what's going on.

@@robertcanavan6600 most definitely! It's why I said wet garlic is no good. Anaerobic conditions are just a no go for garlic (and most of our crops).

I noticed that you put garlic in grow bags and other containers. Did they survive the winter? I’ve had my garlic freeze in containers here in in Colorado. Any bulbs that did survive were very small. Is there a better type of garlic for zone 5?

I planted my garlic last fall. I am wondering if I used too much straw as the mulch as I’m seeing little growth growing up through. Is it possible to use too thick of a mulch on top?

In really really cold regions Merni, growers will use a foot or more of mulch over winter and simply remove 90% of it in the spring. You could try that.

They're 10 inches tall and we've been below zero at night here in the West Kootenays minus 5 this morning and it's doing fine. Any thoughts on planting carrots in between the rows in the next week or 2? My garlic will be out of the ground first half of june b4 the carrots have much size. Cheers

Hey homer, I think you could go a thin row....lightly lightly planted. I'd choose a leafy crop rather than a root one. I'd do spinach or something like that in between...minimize the competition....

Just wish KZbin would recommend Spring based videos in the Spring, and Summer based ones in the Summer. Beginning to think my issue with yellow shoots (new this year) may have been due to overwatering, but it was being watered because it had been such a hot Spring. Find it difficult to know what exactly a plant is "moaning" about much of the time.

You can harvest the greens at any time Tammy. As for the bulb harvest, it can be anywhere from 6-9 months. The shoots begin to fail when the bulbs are close to being ready.

Hey Anna! I definitely remove the smaller of the twins....spacing is very important with Garlic. Feeding is the same...every 3 weeks. 🙂

Question - if i have some plants that are closer than 4 inches, am I better off pulling a few now or just leaving it where it is and accepting smaller bulbs? For what it is worth, my suggestion would be that if they are closer than a couple of inches apart then thin them out and eat the whole of the pulled out plants as "green garlic", but if more than a couple of inches apart then just leave them be.

They do get brown when its close to harvest time...its actually one of the keys to knowing when to harvest. How old are the plants?

Why do the bottom leaves on me garlic keep diein? They seem to keep 8 leaves, new one comes another dies. When its hot they wilt and lean, soil feels moist to me but i water anyway and they purk up, probably to hot. I think im hopeless on garlic.

We plant ours in Oct and put a clear, plastic tub over them during winter. They grow and when it is warmer spring days, we remove tub. Pick it in July. Keep compost on soil.

We can't get onions to grow from seed. Winter sowing didn't work. Planting and growing inside with window didn't work. Don't have grow lights. Just grow from sets again.

I had 12 stalks come up and just got most of the weeds out from around them yesterday, right before I watched your video. So I'm hoping to get 12 or so nice bulbs ! They are about a foot high now..I'm super stoked! This is the 2nd time I've planted garlic. The first time, many years ago, I planted about 45 and they all came up with pig tails and then my neighbor mowed them all down because he thought they were weeds 😆🤣🤣... poor guy felt bad. This time I've since moved and they're in a raised bed. Thanks again. Looking forward to watching some more of your videos, especially tomatoes....and subscribed to your channel. Good gardening!

Yes you can. This is my second year planting garlic or 3rd depending on how you look at it. I have only used rabbit manure and i get awesome size garlic. I plant and fertilize well with rabbit poo. Top with straw or hay and let sit in winter. Now it is spring April 21st here in zone 6b'7a. Moved straw away from garlic put a layer off poo down and recovered with same straw and added a little more to keep it cool for the upcoming heat. Before fertilizing i pulled any weeds. I don't understand. I asked you last year about planting my garlic in the spring and you replied that it needed the winter cold in order to make the bulbs, that I could go ahead and plant it but i would only get greens. Now on this video you are stating that warmer climates can plant in the spring. So will it form bulbs if I plant some now?

Depends on where you live. Growers without a true winter can grow certain varieties of garlic called "softnecks" that are best planted in the "fall/winter" of that region, but because of the tropical-like nature of the climate they can grow fast enough if planted in the spring. It ONLY works for growers in warm climates.
