Kevin, remember that rodents etc. don’t like the touch or feel of Tulle fabric netting. It’s light weight enough you could just lay it over your crops and stake it down with landscape staples, or even rocks and bricks work too. It’s been helping us keep the birds out of our grow bags and pots. They sure like new seedlings....YIKES!

I first planted garlic in the fall of 2013. It was a huge success for a first timer! The harvested garlic bulbs were huge. I proudly gave some to my family and friends with a tag “proudly grown by me”. Plus, I discovered that your garden grown garlics are the best compared to store bought. From then on, I have been growing garlics every year.

Yellow tips can be a sign of sulfur or nitrogen deficiency. Overwatering can also be a cause. A manure/compost mix prevents needing to add fertilizer. When bulbing start add a couple handfuls of bonemeal. Put ~1.5" hardware cloth over your garlic bed soil to protect it from pests bigger than a mouse.

Also as the garlic matures it will send up a center stalk with a flower/seed pod on top, called a chance. I remove these prior to seed production and make a nice garlic pesto. Dig up your bulbs a month after you remove the chances. You can leave the pod for the seeds, but your bulb will be smaller.

Great video on garlic. Last year I ordered mainly hard neck varieties for the scapes as well. It was my first time growing garlic and I didn’t realize that the bigger the clove you plant, the bigger the head gets. I was late to buying so only culinary (small heads/cloves) were available. I got pretty small heads and tons of scapes. We thought the scapes were good, but not too much different from scallions. This year I purchased 100% soft neck from the Walmart produce aisle. The heads and cloves were huge. I put them in the fridge for about two months and planted in the garden at the beginning of January. I would say at least 95% of them are now about 18 inches tall, but will wait to see how the heads form. Lots of the garlic sellers say that grocery store stuff will not even sprout since they are treated to prevent it, but who knows....I’m hoping to make some of those really cool garlic braids that you can do with soft neck garlic and gift them.

The first two I popped in are blooming, but there are literally a couple of dozen little sprouts this Spring - will pop a picture into the Discord server asap.
