Oiling those pots is a brilliant idea! I've never gotten real terracotta pots because they crack, etc. We can have frost here until the middle of April. Love the way your greenhouse has turned out. It looks like it's very enjoyable to work in.

Yes it is enjoyable - I love the extra space. I just came across this tip - do a little more research, Some people line their pots with bubble-wrap and some people oil them inside too - I think it depends on your climate. xx

Good morning to you Terri, lovely photograph of the area, what beautiful countryside you have to enjoy and inspire your work. I have one or two terracotta pots mostly don't do too bad, only one this year small pieces came off it in slices, giving me the impression the clay had been layered , the pot though remains whole.pretty much like the skyline in your photograph the clouds are in layers and different shapes but put together its whole, gaspingly beautiful sky. Hugs and Blessings 💚🌹

Thank you for this information. I've never in all my years heard about oiling terra cotta pots. Living in a cold northern climate in the states my pots do like to crack. Large ones are so expensive that they're not worth spending the money on, but I do love them so. I must try this!

It looks as if you are getting a great start on the garden! I'm holding my breath here in SW FL. It is record-breaking hot weather ( high 80°s and low 90°s). I built a shade house this year, just in time! Now dealing with an armadillo invasion, they dig right into the roots of my garden plants. I don't give up easily (it's that Irish blood 😉). It lightened up my heart to see this great video and how well things are going there!! ALWAYS A GREAT INSPIRATION! Thank you both!

Thank you Terri for the tip of oiling terracotta pots, I will have to do the few I have. Where you visiting Navan Fort in Armagh, i live about 20 mile from it, it's a great place to visit. Your last video was great about The Holy Well. The ancient graveyard looks identical to the ancient Church of Ireland graveyard that is five minutes walk from my house. My dad is buried in it, and it was once an ancient pagan site. From my kitchen window I'm looking across a field to what was once a Rath, it's great all the ancient sites. If you get time sometime and Google Magherally old church and graveyard it is steeped in history, one of the Brontes got married in the old ruin church. The Bronte homeland is not far from me either, Patrick Bronte was born in Rathfriland northern Ireland. Thank you again xx

Really surprised to see you oil your terra cotta. I live at 6,000' elevation in Colorado. We have extreme temps both cold and hot and I've never heard of this. We have terra cotta and use them and keep them outside year round and have never had issues. I love the permeability of the product and use them exclusively rather than plastic, or other, because of this. But, who knows, your area may be different. Your greenhouse is looking really good. Nice to see things come along.

Surprising that they don't suffer frost damage! Maybe your pots are super strong!?? We don't really get frost damage here on the coast so i am just preparing for all eventualities - mainly to prevent evaporation in summer. Greenhouse is a great space now - lots of room to breathe xx

What a clever solution for terracotta pots .I'm not sure it would be enough for our winters here I always wrap ours in bubble wrap,not pretty but effective !I was horrified to hear about the rancid oil ,yuch ☹️. xx
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden Жыл бұрын
Definitely best to stick to organic oil in dark glass bottles. The other type is likely to be rancid and deodorised and is oxidised too with all the light and heat. Bubble wrap could go inside too and the oil might help with evaporation xx

I would love to visit Ireland some day. I am in love with history. We just soak them in water. If there is scaling, just scrub. The plain terra cotta lets the plants breathe better has been our experience. But we live in the Southern US. Totally different climate.

Thanks for sharing! Beautiful pots in a wonderful greenhouse & a very wise woman! I must try oiling my indoor terracotta pots because the soil dries out so fast. I think I’ll try coconut oil but will try to research this. I read that you used 3 coats of sunflower oil. Did the color change back to brown when they dried? Blessings to all🤗💜🇨🇦
@DanusIrishHerbGarden
@DanusIrishHerbGarden Жыл бұрын
I used three coats because once it was dried the pots looked exactly the same. I figured that the oil had been drawn into the terracotta so put on two more coats - 3 is a magical number. Colour was back to the original colour xx

I used terracottas indoors but they tend to crystalize if that is the word. Terracottas are great for outdoors or in a greenhouse. Now I use ceramic pots indoors.

@@DanusIrishHerbGarden I'm not really sure it could be the temperature of the house that's causes the crystalization & mold on the pots. I was disappointed because I love using terracotta pots and I bought so many of them.

Hiya Terri, I do love terra cotta but obviously my climate does not really allow unfortunately. However did find it most interesting coating with oil to help, interesting to me was your thoughts re sunflower oil? Do you have a video on the different oils good bad etc? Would like to know Thankyou blessings to you and yours from a snowy southern Ontario Canada 🇨🇦 🐝

Hi Beverley, no i don't have a video about oils but I would definitely advise everyone to avoid "veg" oil in clear plastic bottles as it will have oxidised and may be dangerous to consume. That is the information from any good nutritionist. xx Always buy organic oil that is cold pressed. xx

What a great idea for the pots! We are going to try your microgreens in small styrofoam coolers. Can these be grown in an apartment window, since they don't have to grow very large?

I love your videos and I have also been working on my land to grow my own herbs/ fruit and vegetables, improve biodiversity and also prefer nature-based spirituality to all the oppressive religions. I personally don't like the term 'Northern Ireland' and believe all 32 counties to be one country, and certainly from all our culture, paganism, music, language, native sports and folklore, there is no division of our country, Of course everyone is free and should be free to call anywhere, anything they want to, but just for me in this particular video, I stopped watching this video after a few seconds when I heard 'Northern Ireland'. I would have just said I was in Co. Armagh, but of course each to their own
