I never really rated Morne Du Plussis , but I really admired his performance in 1980 against the Lions and Jaguars. He was an absolute stand out that year.Wished he had toured NZ in 1981.Danie Craven said the 1981 South African side was the best team at that time to leave South Africa.

The boks were one of the PIONEERS of running rugby, and the offload. Watch this game if you do not believe it.....in additon 1980/1 Bok team arguably the Boks 2nd best team of all time, after 1937 team. If Morne had played on the 1981 tour they would have won the test series there and become the boks best team of all time.

Rubbish! It's like me saying if Mourie, Robertson and Osborne had played in 81 we would have won all three tests. You lost in 81, that's all there is to it.

@chanctonbury63 The Ref cheated the Boks into losing that 3rd test in NZ with that ridiculous late penalty, which never should have been. Spoiled the great test series which should have been drawn.

I just wish, that when the Springboks toured New Zealand in 1981, they played all 3 test matches on Eden Park , as all the other test venues from 1903- 1990 were nothing but mud holes that weren't worthy of test match rugby being played on. Only 1 test of the entire series between the 2 teams was ever played on a firm track. 1921, 1937, 1956 ( 2 tests on firm ground) , 1965, and 1981. So bloody frustrating to watch a test series that never reached its full potential. Ban all night test matches in New Zealand as it's killing the game. Fans want a hard, dry running track.

...and the 1981 series should've been a draw not a win for NZ. We would have done well in the 1987 WC.

Jean -Pierre Reeves suffered a number of blows to the head but still refused to leave the field as part of a well beaten Les Bleus side...37-15...a very successful Bok side losing only 1 test-the 4th and final test to the Br Lions 13-17 in 1980...

Originally the Springboks were due to tour France but the French Government refused to give the Springboks visas which meant that to play the 1980 series against South Africa the French had to play it in South Africa

Good memories. My first live test was the 3rd test against the Lions at Boet Erasmus that year. The umbrella test (I sat in a puddle on the open stand).

One of the best Bok teams, so many legends on that team in the early 80's...bloody Apartheid screwed everything up for this great team.
@SupremeBros20126 жыл бұрын
Are you really trying to compare apartheid to current issues in SA, try being denied entry into certain institutions because of your skin color, or being confined to townships then come back and talk about transformation...its like chalk and cheese, nice try though for false equivalency....anyway the Bok team was solid and yes Apartheid set them back when they came back in 92. It is actually revealing that you seem to be giving apartheid a pass, I guess you were a chief benefactor
