Springfield XD Sight Removal and Installation

i've done lots of XD sights in our shop. I have not found a sight tool that will actually get them off, so I put the slides in a padded vice and heat it up, then tap them out with a punch. I tell the customer before that "your old sights will likely be destroyed," usually when I put the replacement rear sight in, I file just a hair off the bottom and use the proper tool to get them in. Then make sure they are centered as close as possible, then a trip to the range for a perfect zero.

Always heard these were a pain to deal with. Owned my XD9 for 15 yrs and this is one of the reasons I've never bought night sights for it and some shops don't even mess with them either. Thanks for sharing the Gospel at the end too. It's a good way to get the message out. God bless.

Sight-tool Gen 4 worked great on both of my XD sight replacements. Purchased on Amazon for pretty cheap. It's well made

The way to do this is to buy a sight pusher that doesn't have the pusher blade enclosed like the one in the video. Mine has a pusher blade in the shape of a cross that can be rotated and locked down in 4 positions (wide straight, wide angled, thin straight, or thin angled), but the pusher blade sits out front of the sight pusher frame. Then, I tighten it as much as I can by hand, then hit the side of the pusher blade with a small hammer. A couple of firm hits and the sight will move, even if slightly. Tighten the pusher blade again and hit the blade with a hammer a couple of times. It may take 10 times doing this, but this will get sights out without damage. I've done Springfield, S&W M&P, Canik, Ruger, and some others that I was told were impossible to remove without damage. When installing sights, if the sight doesn't slide into the dovetail at least 1/3 of the way (I prefer almost halfway in) you need to remove material from the bottom of the sight. Due to the trapezoidal shape of the dovetail, taking material off the bottom will slowly remove width, as well. Remember, these sights are designed to be adjusted manually by tapping them with a punch or a few twists of a sight pusher. If you are barely able to get the sights into the dovetail, you won't be able to move them the tiny fractions of an inch necessary to adjust them accurately.

Good video, I have been hearing about how difficult it is to change Springfield sights and decided to look into what makes it so difficult. I do not have any Springfield sights to change but I just got the gunsmith position at a local gun store and range and they were telling me about the issues their previous gunsmith had. I am an SDI grad and I was looking at your tools and wanted to ask if you are also alumni, just curious but good video.

Good video, just a few things you could have done to aid in removal/installation of XD sights. Using a Penetrating Oil and a Heat Gun set at 180F to warm the steel around the sight. Expansion (Thermal) will greatly aid in Force necessary to remove those sights. Instead of a Micrometer to check centerline alignment, try using a Steel Machinist Ruler 1/50th. Fixed, rigid and more precise measuring ability than the Digital Calipers. 🎯🔫

I'm so pissed off... I have two xd pistols and can't remove the sights. I even bought the most expensive sight pusher and cannot get them off. This is a good reason to by glock

One thing you should learn about gunsmithing is finesse is much better than brute force. Soak the old sights in Kroil for a day or two then heat up the slide slightly with a heat gun and then use a good sight pusher like an MGW unit. When installing the new sights fit them to the dovetails by sanding or filing the bottom of the sight. I try to get 1/4 to 1/3 of the new sight to slide in by hand and then use a pusher to finish the job. I would be surprised if night sights would survive an install the way you did it. There is great You Tube video by Dawson Sights on installing sights. You would do well to watch it.

Is the sight not directional on the Springfield, i.e. did you push it the right way?

Yes I did. It goes in the way that I put it in. These sights are just notorious for being hard to push out

Actually broke a $150 sight pusher changing mine out. Next time I’ll just go to Shooter’s World and pay the $45 to replace them, saving time and frustration.
