What about all the different poultices and liniments? At some shows everyone does the "Sore-no-more" poultice and standing wraps overnight. I've done it too, but I'm not convinced. Are poultices and liniments basically a waste of time and money?

You've got it right. Poultice/liniments don't really do anything. And since there's no muscle in the lower leg, there's nothing for them to do, even if they did something.
