William Afton/Springtrap is easily my favourite Five Nights at Freddy's character, but over the years of being brought back again and again more fans have been expressing disappointment in the series unwillingness to branch out and let the character rest, but how did that come to be and what made him so special in the first place? Here's Springtrap: A Horror Icon in Ruin.

Part of the problem with Springtrap is a problem that plagues many horror icons. Once they become a regular figure in a franchise, the question turns from "will they beat them" to "HOW will they beat them", causing the villain to be as scary as Team Rocket.

Compare him with Griffith from Berserk, it's a strange comparison I know, but in Berserk the question is not "how are we going to defeat him" it's more like "can we even defeat him?", That's something all horror villains are lacking.

@Ian E so Pyramidhead has a symbolic meaning to James that makes sense in Silent Hill 2. In fact, most of the monsters encountered in Silent Hill 2 have symbolic meanings. The problem is that Konami kept having Pyramidhead and monsters like the bandage nurses show up in later games and movies like silly mascot characters.

Scott is clearly a 'less is more' guy, he's undoubtedly gifted when it comes to creating horror and scifi concepts that work the best in his games with minimal and abstract storytelling but after Fnaf 3's middling reception it's clear that he shifted focus to a long-form story with the books and Fnaf 4 onwards, which causes great ideas to feel very scattershot in their execution. Glitchtrap and Vanny deserved to be their own characters.

If I were told to write my own version of Glitchtrap and Vanny, I'd make Vanny the big bad, a complete psychopath that's a major fan of William and his crooked legacy, a copycat killer. and I'd make Glitchtrap this sort of dark reflection of Vanny's sanity, this illusion symbolising the dark path she took that only exists in Vanny's consciousness to push her into doing what she does, it's a metaphorical way of storytelling.

Springtrap is honestly really similar to Michael Myers for me. In his debut he was terrifying. Amazing design, killing for no real reason, and they scarcely showed him in detail so when they did it was even more terrifying. But after his popularity rises they began putting him in more projects that weren't necessary, adding in lore that made him less scary and ruining his design more and more, as well as showing him more often which ruins his creepiness, even if he still did have some cool moments. Now they bring him back for no reason other than the fact that he's the recognizable villain, and in his final appearance he's essentially a weak old man. I could've just described either one of them and it would be true

@troppie7823 I mean that struggle was there in the legends stuff too, especially with Karen Travis. She tried to make the mandolorians, using Boba as a way to do it, an op awesome warrior culture that Handley could beat jedi in intelligence and skill but that gave her a controversial rep. This got worse in legacy of the force mainly because threw writers were doing the series thus making the mandos and Bobas sudden importance in her books obvious. The fact that the sequel series swerved to show the mandos as amoral mercenaries who would hurt kids and were beaten by jedi indicates that the opposing side could do it too (she had left star wars by that point I think). To be clear I think it's more she's of British military and wants to show the military as cool in whatever she can. See also her controversial take on halo.

The problem in general that not enough people admit is that Scott just isn’t as good of a writer that people treat him like he is. @Busy Ghost the thing is, however, Scott managed to write a decent little tale with the first 3 games. He could've left it there, and while fnaf3 did disappoint gameplay-wise, it did wrap up the story with only a few peripheral mysteries. Instead, he made fnaf 4 and decided to revolve the entire series around the Aftons and its really all been downhill since. The cracks were ripped open exposing how shoddy the writing and planning is. You could tell that he was making it up as he went along. You could see him changing and retconning things. It got messy. It lost its spark for a while. Then the books went and made things more weird. I especially hate how the books were said to explicitely be a seperate Canon from the games, but overtime the writing for the games made it impossible to not use book information to fill the gaping holes. Now we got people talking about illusion disks, fazgoo and robot children. It's gotten really convoluted and really silly, and not in a super fun way.

Part of the horror with Afton/Springtrap was the fact that he killed kids and it was pretty vague as to why he did so, with it being left up to interpretation. Even the “he always comes back” line felt more as a way of saying that his actions will forever haunt the legacy of Fazbear Entertainment. Imagine if fnaf 4's protagonist was Cassidy instead of the crying child, and the minigames followed Cassidy's story leading up to their death and getting to know their hopes for the future and how much the happiest day meant to them. Springtrap's design in the original was amazing, he had that og fnaf charm that makes it clear that he would have been lovable to kids, when he was torn up and housing a human that is, but it's those extra details of the fleshy insides, the tears, that really made him stick in my mind so long. Up until fnaf 3, we hadn't seen a real human character in the games before, just these haunted animatronics. So when we finally did get it, it was implemented perfectly and it really made you think, "Wow, this guy is suffering so much in that suit, that's messed up man"

I think Springtrap was one of the few plot ideas Scott had during the first game and saved for later. There is a green rotten bunny drawing on the wall in the very first game. Springtraps design in FNAF 3 is insanely creepy and awesome. And, surprisingly, I think the look of Burntrap would actually be an amazing look, if it came after 3 and not Scraptrap. The head looks similar enough, he would still have an arm to, you know, have a good reason for it to be there still. His skin is almost completely gone, but his muscles are the last things left with his bones. He's had to replace parts of himself to keep alive, like the eyes, making him a little creepier, some how he had to remove his own eyes to see through different ones. However it came after Burntrap, which in it of itself was a bad design. It's sad they over used him.

I genuinely believe FNAF 3 was the peak of FNAF as a whole. I have always appreciated a mystery, and I think sometimes it’s better to be left wondering than to have a complex answer laid out before you. When it comes to a story, sometimes the mystery alone is compelling enough-perhaps the answer is less satisfying. That mystery is what kept me genuinely interested in FNAF from 1-4, but as more and more was revealed (“revealed”?) and the story got increasingly wacky, weird, and overly complex, the intrigue started to die for me. It’s more fun to wonder why this guy murdered a bunch of kids rather than know that he did it because of remnant and because his daughter was maimed or whatever.

In my opinion the real issue is pretty darn obvious - it's not that they should stop bringing back William, it's that they should *STOP ADDING ONTO A COMPLETED STORY.* But Scott has that problem where a creator of something thinks that, as a creator, their sole job is to make more and more. That's why the series has ended uhh five times now? That's why there's a novel trilogy and then a novel duodecilogy and-- The series legitimately ends, 100% done and over, but then Scotty thinks "But the fans want mOoOoOre" and boots up the ol' ClickTeam - or nowadays hires his favorite passionate-but-incredibly-incompetent dev team to rush out another underwhelming mess with some good highlights. Take a break from social media, go outside, touch some grass, find your Lost father and rethink about your Life choices.

Is William Afton just Charles Lee Ray/Chucky? A psycho killer who possesses a child friendly inanimate object in order to continue killing even after death? Even their catchphrase is the exact same, Chucky always screaming "I'll be back! I ALWAYS COME BACK!" whenever they manage to kill him.... then he comes back.

Personally, Scraptrap was probably the least.. scary. Glitchtrap however, was pretty creepy. He wasn’t an animatronic, but rather a virus with Afton’s will and conscious. But, his design being a handsewn suit, to me, is really cool and a bit creepy. Because, it’s an interesting allegory to the possibility that Glitchtrap’s design was possibly the suit he’d warn to lure the kids into the back room. Even the way he lured the player to their doom in Help Wanted feels akin to how he’d possibly done it. There’s also the chance that Afton still isn’t gone despite Burntrap being taken by the Blob. The virus is still around to cause mayhem in Afton’s name.

To some point for some time but the more situations you put them in, the less it seems mysterious & the more it just seems like they genuinely have no motive. It's like when Half-Life 2 mods end with Gman showing up & saying something vague for no reason when you're playing as a made up character with no significance to the plot. It doesn't raise questions because you know no question will have an answer besides "He's popular".

Not always. It just doesn't have to be extraordinary for the sake of it, like the "searching for immortality" bs. Scott could just say he had a terrible childhood which is usually the case for most problematic people.

To try and stand up for the jumpscares. I love that they are slower almost sadistic. You’re dealing with a criminal mastermind. He’s not gonna jump out in an amateurish manner, he’s going to be slow and meticulous, and almost savoring the moment. Leaving it up to interpretation what he did to you

I always thought he did it on purpose. Just like how he stares at you from the doorway or from the window, or waiting the player on purpose. The animatronics from the first games are desperate, he's not.

The problem with springtrap is it went from "holy crap, this dude is the evilest person in the entire fnaf lore. Is there anything that can kill him?" To now: "oh look Springtrap, i wonder who'll kill him this time. Is he gonna get trapped forever again?" He no longer feels like a threat, but more of a obstacle that gets up after being pushed down, only to get back up again, to be pushed down... it's less threatening when the main villian feels more like that one enemy in a game who appears in every franchise because the devs ran out of models to use for a character.

One thing that made me love Springtrap is that he's genuinely trying to kill you actively, the other animatronics don't do it "on purpose" It was part being stuck on the animatronics, part following the animatronics limitations itself But Springtrap? He was for real out to find you and end you for good, just you and him, it truly put into perspective what was actually at stake on FNAF 3

Him being in hell/purgatory torture by his victims's fursonas that HE created was such a fucking good ending for him.... like I really wish that if the they wanted to keep the franchise they could focus on a copy cat- serial killers irl have those in tons.

I've never played dbd but the fnaf crossover announcement was enough for me to add it to my wishlist, I'm mentioning it here in hopes that (assuming he's the killer they add) they do springtrap justice and restore his honor considering last we saw him was as peepaw afton in the basement and even then people argue if that's him or if it's been retconned from being him at all. So here's hoping whatever incarnation they use (hopefully springtrap or glitchtrap because I think I'd die inside if it's scraptrap or burntrap) they manage to make cool and intimidating.

The downfall of his design is one thing I see has hurt him the most. The original FNAF3 design is Scott's Vader, one of the best designs I've ever seen for a character, mainly because it instantly translates every core aspect of the character to you immediately without any prior knowledge, but can still be peeled back to reveal soo much more. As a kid who was around even the most extreme horror, visually I've seen alot of bad stuff bar legitimate damage, and I'm comfortable around that in fiction but I still can see the horror, fear and brutally of it, but it doesn't cling to me outside of that fiction into the real world. But Springtraps design since I first saw it on the Internet gave me legit fear, even feel uneasy about it do this day, I dunno, it's just shows the monster that Afton is without even saying a word, how disgusting, worn down he is, and his stance is neither clearly human or machine. To me it's perfected body horror. His following designs completely destroy that pressense. Scraptrap is just bad, goofy bad, glitchtrap is still creepy but is clearly human, removing the extreme body horror aspect to it, and burntrap is a great cartoon villain design that uses the originals template, but pulls away from the gritty, filthy punch of fnaf3.

God your point on the FNaF 3 Springtrap jumpscare is so true and I never see anyone talk about it for some reason. It's barely a jumpscare, he moves towards you so slow and the sound is so gentle, where as in the earlier games the animatronics quickly lunged at you with a sudden, loud screech
