We're definitely going to focus more on the Fast March after hearing that coaching point. Thank you.

I wish I had good coaching when I ran track. They just pounded our brains with stride length & frequency. Which caused many of us to develop overstride, including me. Terrible technique but we had no idea what we were doing wrong.

The statement that from jogging to running to sprinting the thigh split increases is so true. And it happens in the same or even shorter time (air time) in sprinting. This obviously requires a faster leg movent the faster one runs. So Mr. Weyand you won't read that but faster sprinting is indeed achieved with more rapid leg movement! The reason for exessive back side mechanics is very often a weak core/midsection. If the pelvis/core isn't stable the hipflexion reflex isn't working powerfully. Forcing the knee drive doesn't work well. The power has to com from the core via a reflex. Even Bolt said 'if your core is weak the knees don't come up'.

Sprinting is the world’s best core exercise.

To eliminate back side mechanics your set position must have only front side mechanics you need to start from a good running form position

Hi Tony - Great stuff! My son will be a sophomore in high school this year. He has way too much backside stuff going on right now. We are working on high marches and wicket drills to emphasize the front side. My question is do we hold off on the timed flies for a while until we hardwire the mechanics with drills? As soon as we run timed flies he resorts back to poor mechanics. Are we just reinforcing the bad mechanics?

Great question. I think you need to reprogram first. Take your time. As long as it takes. Lots of video.

Whenever u show a vid of marcell sprinting it doesn’t look like he’s necessarily staying tall. It looks like he’s more so pushing the ground rather then striking? Thoughts coach?

He’s definitely not running at his height (5’6”). Lots of fast sprinters “lead with their heart”.

Hey Tony do you ever feel like form is over emphasized to the point kids arent sprinting to their full capacity? Many times I have kids tell me they did not go " all out" because they felt they would make small mistakes like butt kicking, or crossing midline, etc. but when I tell them to SPRINT first and think of form Second their average times drop

We drill. We don’t “think”. We sprint mindlessly with our “lizard brain”.

I believe form is trained in the athlete over time with repetition so down the line there is a lot less thought because the body parts foot etc..movements and are in alignment with the proper form that can’t be coached fully but expressed with out a ton of *Queing Over time. On a side note I believe Coach Korfist has expressed that some athletes form is aberrant due to the The bodies lack of strength as well as other issues that can’t be resolve until by the que.
