The end made me laugh. They shouldn't be teaching young engineers to follow directions to build things, they should teach them how to use their brains and use logic and resources to complete the task at hand. You are truly an inspiration Doc! Keep it up! Can't wait to see the Sears builds!

Love this video. As a small engine mechanic in the middle of nowhere I end up doing a lot of these older tractors and this is a nice bit of ingenuity to have on hand. Good thinking!

An other example that there are some mechanics left that also use their brains.👍👍👍

THANK YOU sir ! I recently bought an old murry garden tractor that has one of these transaxles in it and I was wondering how I was going to lock the darn thing. You beat me to it! Its going to be turned into a mud mower if you havent guessed, complete with custom copper dual exhaust covers, steampunk style! Great vids!

Never touched a 2300 series but I have experience with the 633 which is similar. It was in fact the first transaxle I ever took apart, that was a major league pain in the ass too! Since there is NO service manual available I had to print out somewhat unclear parts breakdowns and assemble the thing based on those alone because I took no pictures. I had the thing torn down as far as possible, down to every last washer, gear, and snap ring. No idea why I ripped it apart that far. Great video Doc.

Nice job!! The phasing of the gears was why the bend was opposite with the plates. The tooth on the little gears on one side was furthest in and on the other side it was the center big gear where the tooth was furthest in to the little gears. I just happen to notice that because of the starters I do at work when I check for clearance between the teeth, that's what I look for, force of habit I guess, LOL. Yah limited slip setups are only good for hard surfaces, they don't do to well for off roading.
@DocSprocket9 жыл бұрын
+prancstaman You're absolutely correct. The gear phasing occurred to me, after I had filmed that segment. I guess I'd already used up all my available brain cells, and had to wait for a few more to come back online ;)

Ingenious solution. The 2317 is one STRONG transaxle. It makes an 820 look weak in comparison. Is the limited slip differential made by Hilliard?

And mine has a square space between the spider and pin with a half circle space for the pin ... Worked out good though just squared off my 2.5 inch hub to fit
@DocSprocket10 ай бұрын
If you had spiders, a pin, and a square space- you don't have a 2317 so this video wouldn't really have been relevant. But, it sounds like other ideas I've floated, managed to come into play. Good job!

how do these mowers steer with locked axles, grass mud snow etc?
@DocSprocket5 жыл бұрын
That's a good, valid question and I am glad you asked. When you eliminate the differential action in an effort to increase traction, you DO compromise steering to some degree. How much it is effected, depends on a LOT of factors. These factors include the track width and wheelbase of the machine, tire type versus terrain, weight distribution, etc. As a general statement (covering MOST circumstances), I find the compromise tolerable. The turning radius widens, but for the most part it is a small price to pay for the far superior traction. As my previous statement suggests, there ARE things you can do to improve steering after locking your diff, such as more nose weight, different tires especially up front, and tweaks to the frontend geometry. I hope that helps answer your question.

There is still a range of motion allowed that might just get some purchase and metal fatigue the end and start making some soup. This will work for a bit but you should still look at welding this. Love your vids by the way please keep them up. Have just bought a 61 wheelhorse to restore.
@DocSprocket9 жыл бұрын
+chimp3376 I really don't see it being too much of a concern. Once completed, there was zero discernable play (lash) to be noted. If there WAS play, then yes. Ultimately it would hammer itself to bits. I found nothing. Realistically, a periodic check should reveal any developing lash. If so, then it can be re-addressed with new plates, or whatever the case may be.

Are you still going to do a "regular " 2300 peerless lock?. Or is the regular one more like this 2317?.. can't really find any good vids on it
@DocSprocket7 жыл бұрын
The standard 2300 differential is the more common "spider and side gear" arrangement. I don't have one at this point. If I lay hands on one, I may consider engineering a Doc Locker for it.
@ButlerBuilt9 жыл бұрын
i knew if i waited long enough youd figure it out before i had to, lol. Looks great man, i know the standard 2300 will be similar but not quite as easy. Which side of the case did you pull off?
@DocSprocket9 жыл бұрын
+Brad Butler You have to prop it up with the thinner (non-shifter) half down, and pull the shifter side of the case up and off.

Doc, I was wondering if I can use one of these transaxles as a standalone transmission for a bike. Would I have to lock the diff I'd imagine
@DocSprocket6 жыл бұрын
With a bit of creativity, I suppose you could! You might be better off with a 700, though. Have a look through my content. I have a video on the 700.

Did you replace the shaft seals that go in the housing while you were inside the trans, or can you take it apart and reassemble without damaging them? Peerless manual says to replace them but I cannot find part numbers for the seals needed.
@timmerritt28539 жыл бұрын
is the peerless 2300 the same as this one as far as the way its built?
@DocSprocket9 жыл бұрын
+Tim Merritt The transaxle shown in the video IS a Peerless 2300. However- the differential being locked, is the Duo-Trak Limited Slip, that appears in the 2317 model. The regular open differential that commonly came in the standard 2300 variants, is different.

Just curious, I have some "liquid steel" epoxy putty. might it be possible to just mix enough to force into the gear area where your "shims" are to take up the area and to prevent the gears from rotating? I'm just asking about the "theory" of doing it.
