Күн бұрын

Hiking through the wilderness I stumbled upon a large spruce tree that had recently been blown over by the wind. I saw it as an opportunity to harvest the bark to craft baskets from.
This video follows the process as I use a knife to create a medium sized spruce bark basket. These types of projects are a lot of fun and yield a great item for use around camp.
Since I started so late in the day, I ran out of time and was unable to attach the reinforcement for the rim. I will finish the basket another day but even without the reinforced rim it's still a functional piece of kit.
I plan to do more spruce bark projects in the future since it's such a great material to work with. God bless!
The knife used in this video is a Helle Sigmund.

I originally read "spruce bark blanket" and thought "Oh, a spruce bark bivy!" A great foraging basket all the same - gather a lot of calories and nutrients in that! Have you ever sealed one up with sap to capture rain or carry water? Lots of water in Alberta, so rarely a need for such an item, but a fun project.

You think if you had a big enough piece of spruce bark like this with this kind of frameless construction that you could make a boat and it'd be sturdy enough to go fishing?
@KuskBushcraft
@KuskBushcraft Жыл бұрын
Spruce bark canoes were historically used to travel across water. I think a frame would be necessary in order to maintain the shape and to add structure to the vessel. Without the frame I feel the bark would crack.

that's a nice looking basket, would like to make one too at some point! have to admit that the amount of mosquitoes was freaking me out by the end D: did you bring some repellant or do the mosquitoes not care about you at all? I usually end up having a bunch of them landing on me at the same time, trying to suck me dry during summer...
