Sprue Design in Blender | Casting the Snake Scale Ring!

In this video, I show how I design the sprues to print with a ring model using Blender. Sprues are the channel that allow molten metal to flow into a mold during casting and their placement/design can sometimes make our break the outcome . So having a way to quickly add sprues to the model can be very useful.

Excellent methodology. Though the bronze foundry where I once worked used ceramic shell instead of investment, we used pretty much the same principles for sprues and gates, whether we made monuments or jewelry. Great video, well narrated.

@@GraceNoteForge Actually, for rings of the sort you make and especially because of the percentage of resin included with the wax particles, the shell might shatter unless you experiment with a slow ramp up of the temperature. The effort may not be worth it. To improve the flow of bronze throughout the mold - and you may have left out this step to make your video more brief - use a vacuum chamber while the investment is wet to improve the consistency of its porosity, then when the burnout is complete and the bronze is molten and de-slagged with borax, set the mold n a casting vacuum table and pour. You shouldn’t need venting sprues or runners, which helps eliminate the amount of grinding and post-processing. If this helps, I would love to send you a couple of ring files I sculpted in Nomad Sculpt.

You're right, I don't think it would work well on jewelry but I've always wanted to try ceramic shells casting for a larger cray sculpture. I'd love to see your work! Do you have an Instagram?

Работаю восковщицей почти 20 лет, и, что хочу сказать, сколько должно стоить такое бронзовое кольцо,если так заморачиваться. Даже работая на заводах, где отливали по 100кг золота в месяц такого не видела))) Это бы только сидели и литники продумывали, а не работу делали. Такое простое кольцо и с одним внутренним литником отольется, всё ещё зависит от мастерства литейщика и чистоты процесса литья.

I agree, the process isn't very cost efficient (I mentioned in the video that this is a little overkill) but the point of the project was to learn more about the casting process and experiment with some interesting techniques I was playing with. I'm no expert when it comes to casting jewelry but experimenting is one of my favorite ways to learn. 👍

Thanks because of video you made exactly for blender, in casting progress you watering the flax to fast, your metal was red and suddenly you cooled it, most of small holes in your metal surface are because of that, let the metal become cool itself for 15 minutes, you will have better surface

How do you remove bubbles and cavity from investment ? Do vacuume them?

Yep! I use a vacuum chamber right after mixing the investment and then one more time after pouring the investment into the flasks.
