I made a peeling off & sanding experiment with 4 primers:
- Vallejo surface primer
- AMMO mig `ONE SHOT` primer (Badger Stynylrez)
- ALCLAD 2 primer & microfiller
- Mr.FINISHING SURFACER 1500

Interesting video! I had no luck with Vallejo primer, no matter how careful I was, it always peeled off. Since then I use One Shot Primer which works perfectly.

Thanks Starfish 😃, `One Shot` primer feathers really nice for an acrylic product.

The primers which you can use directly from the bottle are very handy. But sometimes the surface got a little bit grainy when I was using the acrylic ones. My favorite is still Mr.Surfacer with Leveling Thinner. Thank you for the Experiment! Now I know I don't have to be so careful when peeling of tape :)

This is an excellent experiment. I'm always concerned about tape masking pealing paint off. Looks like, at least with primers, as long as you allow enough time to cure no issues from what you did. I think another idea would be to do the tape test with actual paints since there is a lot of masking going on before adding clear coats and I've had it strip paint off before. Just an idea! Thanks again for another excellent video.

Have you tried the white One shot primer too? The black and grey work perfectly for me, but the white gave me a lot of issues. It was way too thin straight from the bottle, like water and had no coverage power. When I applied it heavier to cover the red plastic I used it on, I got many runs. The grey and black are great, but I can‘t recommend the white. Threw it away and bought Mr surfacer 1500 white, not ideal as I wanted to move away from solvents.

Hail Caesar! ;-) I haven’t tried it yet. I would recommend Tamiya XF-2 Flat White, great coverage, sprays nice and is less toxic than lacquers.

Vallejo is my favorite brand of colours, despite the high tag price in Brazil. Nice to see Vallejo primer side by side comparison with other brands.

Thanks for sharing, looking for alternatives for spray can primer. Does Vallejo sand well? I like to prime my printed sculpts for paint adhesions and spotting imperfections. Till now been using Duplicolor spray primer but the smell is intense and want something similar for an airbrush preferably with less smell.

You are welcome 👍. Vallejo doesn`t feather well/rough edges (video timestamp at 2:04). AMMO mig `ONE SHOT` primer sands beautifully and doesn`t smell bad (video timestamp at 2:13). Hope it helps. Cheers!

@Sprue Fascination Channel , Nice test! But I'm totally puzzled, the video is listing Mig one Shot primer as sprayed with 18 psi an Vallejo primer with 25 psi. I don't get. How can that be? Mig One Shot Primer (=rebranded Stynylrez) is notorious for needing high pressure, certainly higher than Vallejo for the same airbrush. I suspect a typo: Mig One Shot primer probably was set at 28 psi, not 18 psi. Can you please check?
@SprueFascinationChannel
@SprueFascinationChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Norbert, I appreciate your taking the time to write 👍. Pressure was indeed set to 18psi (it can be seen in the video that it´s not `heavy handed`) although it can be sprayed with higher pressure without problems (orange peel texture first, levels out after). I also use Mig One Shot Primer with a lower pressure to check the putty work (and sand if necessary) where I don`t need a heavy coat (and it does not react with Tamiya putty because of different formula).

With the Vallejo primers can I use Alcohol or Tamiya x20a as thinner?
@SprueFascinationChannel
@SprueFascinationChannel Жыл бұрын
Hi JC, Vallejo primer doesn't need to be thinned for airbrushing, use 25psi and 0.5mm nozzle. The first coat should be light, spray in layers. If you still decide to thin it, use Vallejo airbrush thinner. Tamiya X20A is not recommended because it´s alcohol based.

@@SprueFascinationChannel if my nozzle is 3.5 do i stay at 25psi or do i go higher? or lower?
@SprueFascinationChannel
@SprueFascinationChannel Жыл бұрын
Hi Tony, sorry for a late reply. I guess you should go a bit higher if you use it without thinner. Be sure to try it first on an old model or some scrap plastic.

Huh, so you can actually sand Vallejo primer after all? I heard a ton of people bitch and moan "it peels right off!" when you try to sand it... how long did you let it dry?
@SprueFascinationChannel
@SprueFascinationChannel 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Benji Mlem, yes, it can be sanded but it does not feather (edges) like other primers. I left it for 48 hours 👍

@@SprueFascinationChannel ah, curses, I thought for a second it's better than it actually is :( Still, I mostly paint figurines, so I don't really need to sand anyway... Still, gonna try badger's primer, it seem to be too good to be real - sandable like solvent primers, dries much faster than Vallejo AND is supposedly non-toxic...
