Test Drive: Ammo One Shot Transparent Primer

Ammo One Shot is a repackaged/licensed/whatever Badger Stynylrez, and as such it's basically the best acrylic primer out there. But...transparent primer? Seems silly, but only if you think of it as a primer. Let's take it for a spin and see what's what.

Mig stated the reason for the transparent version is mainly for the Gundam builders who want to prime and paint the parts can use the transparent primer and not forget what color each part should be painted.

I mix the transpiratory with an acrylic colour, the benefit is that I get my prime & first coat in one step.

I'll will definently used it as a flat finish coat it looks impressive, better than other clear coat I had used. Great for military models. Thanks for the review

Only point I could think of for such a primer is to mix it with some paint to make your own color of primer. I think Mission Models makes some for just that purpose

Or prime clear parts that will have clear color on top, for example tank periscopes or plane landing lights and that type of thing

Great informative video Matt. That finish looks awesome and I can see that on all military aircraft. Have you tried its durability in standing up to weathering, oils, etc?

Three words. Bandai Star Wars. (or Gundam). And with some experiments, I would assume it would make the plastic impervious to any "hot" weathering products. It would make building these kits faster than ever. Cut off sprues. Click assemble (and possibly glue anyway). Spray the clear Stynlrez. Get out your oils and enamels and go town....

I used the titan translucent glossy primer from ammo and it's great! I used it for the base of the Bandai AT-ST which I wanted to keep the brown but make it look wet and just add mud splashes. Works great! Also instead of a top coat, I've had great results.

Could see it used to eliminate a few steps of painting on colored plastic. Example, you want a bright right and if you dont have a pink or white primer you could use the clear and get a nice red in one coat on a red plastic. So basically it could save you some paint and time in regards to tones. I like the sheen to it though. Its a nice matte. It did have a nice effect on the decals too. Interesting product.

For canopy frames maybe to let the interior colour stick to something before you put the top coat on?

I see A point been looking for one was going to use a matt clear coat may try this though, my use was to paint pre colored plastic like Gundam models or game pieces that come in pre colored plastic.

It can be used for Bandai kits that have many different pieces in different colors, so you prime without losing the original color and potentially forget which parts should go in which color.

It looked and behaved like MM Acryl Flat Clear: like milk in the cup, but flat and clear when dry. Testing on completely unpainted surfaces was really the “priming” test - it just changed the texture of the plastic to give paint something to bite into and It didn’t bead up on the bare plastic, even when hosed on in the Stynylrez way. How about metal or resin?

Maybe (just maybe), when i paint canopys, i first paint the cockpit color and then the plane color, example, Think in a p-47 razoback canopy, i first paint the green zinc chromate, and them the main camo color (or bare metal), so when you see the cockpit in the finished model you see the green cockpit in the canopy not the camo color, just like the real plane, but if you do this, you cant use regular primer, so is just paint on plastic, and acrilyc paint its a little weak without primer, so transparent primer can fix this. This is just an idea, i really dont know why they make that product. Nice channel, Greetings from Chile🇨🇱

If this polishes as beautifully as Stynylrez does this could be the answer to my problems with getting a hard mirror gloss clear coating. I don't know why I've had so much difficulty with this task but I've tried a wide variety of gloss clears and they all come out either as orange peel or with air bubbles. Been driving me nuts.

Transparent plastcc primer has been around for years in the auto paint industry, for priming plastic before 2 k primer

What do you thin your one shot with? I bought it to try and it only thins with my AK real colour thinner so is it a lacquer and not a primer the same as real colours? Because it comes off so easy when using chipping fluids etc the same as Aks real colours come off easier than some acrylics! I got the Brown oxide one I don't like it much, the transparent one shots probably just a varnish! I use a gloss varnish over bare PE as metal primer myself and looks the same as the micro scale gloss or matt I use! It says on the bottle its non toxic waterbase but it clumps as soon as an acrylic thinner hits it only the AK real colours thinner thins mine and cleans it out my airbrush! The stuffs a lacquer definitely and There Transparator does this too if used neat as a primer and not mixed in paint! All same products used to make him money for different products I'm finding testing them just now!

Uh.............It's nothing more than an acrylic polyurethane. Floor wax, or perhaps something like Createx 4030 or a Minwax poly/crylic. I guess one advantage would be you can make it any color your want. You can use it as an inter coat. you can use it as a base for craft paint. But price per volume it's pretty expensive compared to floor wax.

No. Ultra Matte sloughs off with any hint of weathering being done nearby.. Looks great but it's glass-jawed. AKRC flat just...isn't. I did a whole test run (last summer maybe?) and never got around to editing the video, but it compared a ton of flats - Tamiya XF86, Gunze C182 and GX113, Testors Dullcote, AK Ultra Matte, AKRC Flat Clear, Kcolors XW10 and XW01 etc - for overall flatness and then for durability. The three standouts in both were Dullcote, GX113, and Kcolors XW01.

I still stand by Winsor and Newton's Galeria Matt/Satin varnish. Thin with a bit of distilled water (about 1:5 ratio), spray it on so it's just wet (but not so much that you flood the surface) and you're good to go. Stands up to oils and enamels perfectly fine in my experience.

Ammo One Shot is rebranded stynylrez. Ammo's regular clears - no thanks. Got many, many superior options. But Stynylrez has some of the most amazing leveling properties I've ever seen, and after it's cured it's quite durable. Given that Kcolors is basically unobtainable now, and that Aquagloss is only available as, well, gloss, it's nice to have an option for an acrylic satin clear.
