The Best Way Learn Any DCS: World Aircraft!

Creating practice drills for yourself that hit every key skill you need to fly a successful mission in your chosen aircraft, within a compact and readily repeatable package is the best way to learn a DCS World Module in my humble opinion.
My recommendation is to create a mission where you must complete one task before moving on to the next, such as downing two interceptors then attacking targets with LGB’s then moving onto connecting with a tanker with pattern work to follow the tanker.
You should always have a game plan as to how you want to move through the practice drill and what you want to accomplish to aid your evaluation of your flight and allow you to recognize what to improve.
While these short practice drills are great, you should also try flying longer cross country flights in your chosen aircraft as those can also allow you to go more in-depth with the systems while you have some down time.
These practice drills are a great way to learn a new DCS World Aircraft or Re-familiarize yourself with an old friend thats been sitting in the hanger for too long.

Indeed, key binding is a fastidious but mandatory step. Check for Chuck's Guides on mudspike website, they are great. 1 guide per plane (DCS, IL2, Xplane), lot of screenshots and cases (ie Startup procedure, missile procedure, air to group procedure, engine management). They are up to date, I use them for all my DCS planes.

This experience will depend greatly on what controls you are using. Those who have either a basic stick (like the Logitech 3D Pro for example) will struggle to bind everything required since so many modifiers are needed and those modifiers make basic use of the controls more fussy and much slower. If you have a basic, entry level HOTAS like the TM FCS set, it is a bit better but even that setup has some pretty big issues (the single hat switch on the stick is outright silly considering the demands placed on HOTAS setups by modern sims). No matter what setup you use, the best advice I can give is to focus on the essentials first and foremost. If you are mostly using full fidelity (fully clickable) DCS modules, you should focus on ONLY binding what is actually on the stick and throttle and if you have any room left over, add other stuff. People often like to bind things like landing gear or other similar controls but usually those are not only accessible easily in the cockpit but also often only used twice during a mission. Binding that stuff doesn't make a lot of sense unless you have the extra room on your HOTAS setup to support it.

You could also make one general layout and bind the keys according to that, with minor variations. For example Hat 1 for trimming, Hat 2 for TMS, Hat 3 for DMS, Hat 4 for CMDS, if the stick has as much. Set it up like that it it eases you into it a lot more. Ok it's not that realistic, but imho a good compromise. Chuck's guides really help as the manuals can have a difficult setup, I love Heatblur's F-14, but damn do I not like how the manual is set up. First they show you every panel and what is where, while throwing all the acronyms at you without you knowing what that is, and then you get an explanation of what these systems do. I prefer it the other way round.

Great video, as always. I did something simular, I build a huge trainingmission on the NTTR, CC and PG. There are SEAD-Missions, Interdiction (Convoi's (all defended), Tanks), Groundattack (defended and undefended), CSAR (mostly A-10c or AV-8B), Navaltargets (defended), A2A (BVR, WVR), AAR and I can do the Basic Stuff as well like Carrier-OPs etc..

A little more detailed in mission editor than what I do, but the concept's the same. Pick a situation to practice, set up a target and loadout, and practice until it flows. Really, really liking the laser guided rockets on the JF-17, if only the WMD7 picked up targets easier

The way i learn a dcs module is i try and spend atleast 1 hour or so in a certain aircraft then after the hour is up change to a new plane then swap back to the first plane and keep doing that and so far learnt f-18, f-14, harrier and now throwing the f-16 and jf-17 into the mix

My personal problem is I don't learn from reading.. I learn by seeing and doing, and I am just starting dcs... f16 first, f18 will be later, and I hear rios is a thing so I got the f14 for much later on. I just need to find someone with patience that says push x (random) button keyboard to do whatever on the plane... or how to use the radar and navigations from day one. Hi. As long as your trigger is common for all 3 Others Smoke Trigger Zones, You only have to clone the Smoke Markers. This way, It's easier for the system to handle triggers and ressources. Here there is only 3... imagine if it was way more... Also, Depends on the effect you are looking for, you could use the On Mission Start Strigger to avoid having a Fourth trigger, but you demonstrate how to create action / reaction trigger so, Good one.

In my opinion, the FC3 does more damage in the long term. When I started DCS, I wanted the 2 aircraft I grew up watching fly around Camp Lejeune. So I got the F16 and the A10a. I love the F16 she is still my go-to when work needs are done. The FC A10 is just bad it looks OK, but there is so much going on that you must have a clickable cockpit. Or you need to understand the FC3 plans, reqier you learn hundreds of keybinds.

Of course they did; you went from Russian-style instrument layouts with Russian-pattern instrumentation, in metric, to US-style instrument layouts with US-style instrumentation, in Imperial measurements. There are some pretty big differences in how the Russian and US instruments present the same information. I find it easier to swap between a US 1940s-era P-51 to a US 2000s-era F-16C, than it is to swap between an F-16 and MiG-29 made within a few years of each other. The instruments in the P-51 present information almost exactly the same way the modern US instruments do (even if they aren't as accurate or precise)

Kenneth Hicks in my opinion in DCS they are extremely extremely similar, the F-16 is slight more maneuverable G high speed and the F/A-18 has a slightly bigger payload

Past 12+ yrs I have been playing and learning FSX with some success. It is much better for learning the basics as well as for more advanced F-18 carrier take-off and landing which I did several times in sets of five. I find the learning curve for DCS steep. Cockpit layouts look small with limited access.

Followed this to a T (after zooming in😀} but nothing gets the smoke to work properly, I dont know if anything has changed since the video was made. I made the smoke green and the first armour group as i approach I can see the green smoke in the distance but as I get closer it goes off. I then check out the other two groups but no smoke showing. I guess the smoke is activated but by the time I get to them it is off. I cant find an option to have the smoke stay on. Great video though, has got me delving into the mission editor.

Do you turn on auto-pilot with heading and altitude hold on while you are busy setting up everything in your cockpit? I find that when I’m zoomed in on the MFD and PFD changing settings, that I start loosing or gaining altitude or rolling left or right, unless I have auto-pilot turned in to maintain my heading and altitude.

Ofcourse, that's why it's there for. Altitude hold with a little roll angle to hold an orbiting pattern is very useful when you're scanning for ground targets or entering JTAC coordinates. F-16 autopilot is brilliant in its two-switch simplicity.

Compared to f18, is the f16 an easier or more difficult to learn? I went with f18 as first full module since that's what everyone recommended, flying is my problem but I somewhat struggle with f18 systems. The f16 vids I've seen look a bit easier to use weapons and systems.

I literally only have experience in DCS using the su-25 and the f-18 and I learned the su-25 first quite thoroughly before even trying the two week free trial module of the f-18 the other day. My first impressions about the f-18 were that it looked very scary and confusing but then after watching a like 15 minute cold start tutorial video and doing it myself a few times I managed to get it in the air pretty easily and then within a couple hours learned most of its weapons systems and I can do air-to-air pretty easily but I'm still having issues with air to ground on account of not understanding the ground targeting system in harms yet. But I can definitely tell you that learning has been much faster on the f-18 because I learned my fundamentals on the Su-25. Basically I'm saying if you can't already run at least the basic missions for the Su 25 probably don't get and even more complicated module yet. You got to walk before you can run and you're trying to fly a billion dollar killing machine that has like a hundred buttons switches levers and knobs that are extremely poorly labeled lol.

I originally started on the Blackshark and a10a but the f18 just wasn't meshing with me. Now I mostly just fly f16,have all the systems and weapons down fine. It was much easier for me to learn. I still have issues with the f18. As for my original content it said flying was my problem, but what I meant to say is that flying isn't a problem. Either way been in the f16 for the last year now. It's my fav out of all the others I did free try out on. It can do basically anything but carrier ops.

@@markrogers7304 I actually went the other way i was flying the 18 at first got really good at that. I just got the 16 and so far ive had about 2 days with it and i can do Air to air im not as good at it as i am with the 18 however i can lock up targets and fox 3 them! For me having gotten the 18 down pat i was able to use that as a base line to understand the 16 because although how you do stuff in the 16 is different the idea is the same. I am working on the Air to Ground for the 16 that will be fun to learn but the way im going about it is to not get upset and to just have some fun with it. Although landing the 16 is wayyy different then landing the 18 the 18 i can just yeet the 18 on the deck the 16 i can touch it down but boy maintenance has been pissed at my 16 pilot. Once i get those down i will try air to air refueling that i haven't even thought about touching yet. I can do it in the 18 no problem the 16 yea ima wait on that one.

Best way to learn any DCS Module: Just trim it out bro!

Hey buddy, I know its totally unrelated but just bought Thrustmaster warthog hotas and literally not understanding how to fully use it. When I use it with target software all the axes get messed up especially the slew axis. Could you please help... saw your setting joystick but didn't get any answer. Thanks!

Yogesh Rathod I have never ever used the target software I just set up all my controls in DCS, I would wipe everything back to factory defaults get rid of the target software and just adjust everything with DCS

Don't use TARGET software, you'll spend hours pulling your hair out when everything works, and then the next time it doesn't. Just use the In-Game options to bind your keys. First step is to choose your aircaft (Unfortuntately, you'll have to do this with every single aircraft, so it takes time...), start a mission, then press 'ESC.' then 'Adjust Controls', and then 'Axis Assign'. Go though each column for your stick and throttle (and rudder pedals if you have them) and delete every single binding that isn't actually relevant to your HOTAS. You may want to check that your throttles and rudder pedals, the axis are set as "slider", otherwise they'll be going crazy and doing the opposite of what you expect them too. You don't need to use the target software. I find it clunky and messy. I would only really use Target for games that do not allow you to bind things directly within the game. DCS has a fairly well developed key-bind system, and thus the target software isn't required. Within DCS, first find the thing which you would like to bind. Once you've found the in-game thing you wish to bind, select the input device which you want to bind it to, be that the joystick or the throttle. Then simply press the button you want to bind the thing to, and then press save :)

@@Spudknocker you're missing out Spud! I use a Virpil base but still use it via Target. I have it so both my stick and throttle are bound together as a single control, and then every switch direction is detected as it's own direct X input. This means I don't have to rely on modules supporting an on / off switch, because off could be button 56 for example and on could be 57. You can even do more complicated things such as short and long press of buttons doing different output (if they don't already in the module that is). My stick and throttle is now capable of having 128 direct X buttons plus the axis (and the lower throttle detents on the hog are also mapped to an on and an off too).

So, how do we get to understand the cockpit and weapon systems of each aircraft, given even the training missions are so diabolically shit ! how can we make these "drills" if we cannot work our way around the cockpit ? and properly understand the cockpit/weapon systems ?

Setting up controls in DCS is like a case of an adept workshop enthusiast who thinks he has to buy a list of specific tools before he can work on anything. Set up axes and view controls plus some really basic stuff. Then just start doing tutorials and quick missions to death.
