I work at a college. From the students' perspective, they just don't know. We need to teach high school civics as part of the core curriculum. It should also be reinforced at the college freshman level. I was able to implement discussion revolving civics, voting, and candidates during lecture. Afterwhich, I found out that they weren't even registered to vote!!! I was able to get nearly 100 registered at the last minute. We're not doing enough for our first-time voters. I know many who didn't have access to this knowledge and therefore missed the deadline in Texas.

Your point about "civics classes" is well said - but also pointless because the Republican backed cuts to public education got rid of classes like that decades ago.
