To see my entire feature Doc visit www.createspace.com/206142. To support my efforts to create more clips please donate to me at www.patreon.com/allinaday. You are watching the first section of my feature documentary, Sputnik Mania. It was made with my talented editor/ally John Vincent Barrett. In making this I decided intentionally not to make a TV special but to make a feature, with music and narrator, and drama not common in TV docs. I am proud of his work and hope you enjoy it. I think it's because in the 60's, everyone was obsessed with the future but also the fear that they wouldn't live to see it. Right now, people are obsessed with the image of a distopian future and a planet annihilated by stressing of resources.

I was born a few years after Sputnik but remember other family members talking about seeing it in the skies over Iowa in 1957. I read later that most people actually saw the reflection off the booster which would have been trailing the actual satellite but which was much larger and thus much brighter, even if less shiny. I remember seeing Skylab in the 1970s. Still a thrill.

A lot of technological advances happened in the war itself.

Despite all the technological advances we have made,in more than 50 years since Sputnik was launched we have still not progressed with manned flight further than our own moon, you'd have thought that with the speed other technologies have advanced at that by now we would have a base on the moon and already have been to Mars and back.Money is obviously a limiting factor, but I do think we should be further ahead than the space station and Hubble.

It was a triumph that the USA was first to walk on the moon and plant our flag....territorial. But then the realities of Viet Nam, integration, and other problems demanded the government's attention and money. It was time to put space aside and try to handle things that were challenging on earth.
