Speros, just wanted to let you know I've made several spoons and spatulas for sometime. But after coming across your video show the other day using your lathe I tried it on my lathe the for the first time. Oh man Speros, this technique is so much easier and faster. Nice work...but what was the point of turning the paddle end? The handle of course, but why did you spend all that time on the paddle ends?

Chris Conners hi Chris, thanks for watching. You don’t have to turn the end but turning it does a few things. If your end is off it will round the edges and it will also parallel the sides and align the end with the handle of your original cuts were off. Also, if the head is off it creates more vibration while turning the handle. I like to turn, so more turning and less sanding or sharpening off the lathe is my preference. Thanks.

Perhaps I missed it but after the initial placement of the spoon did you move it before you finished?

++10 on the artistic stuff. Too many KZbinrs stopping at turn & treatment. Those little extras make the big difference. Nice jig. Now if I can work out an easier height adjustment, I will have a perfect bowl jig. Can you keep the music quieter please. 75 % of vocals. Its nice - just to loud ( intrusive ).

I built the spoon carving jig and it works great, also made an adapter so I could use 2" sanding disks for body work to make different sized spoons.

I think they worked out really well. I Iove Olive wood too, I sourced some Olive wood pen blanks last Christmas, from Bethlehem and made some pens out of them. I think your jig was highly sophisticated worked well and has a lot of potential. thanks James

Shawn Siegrist hi, thank you. I bought the sanding disk at Home Depot but they don’t have them anymore. It’s a Freud diablo corner edge. Home Depot and some other stores have them online. Hope that helps.

You could also use the King Arthur chain saw disks too or the tungsten rounded wheels. I’m not sure where you are, but I’m sure you could find one of them. Thank you! thanks for your answer, could you please specify the Diablo disc... what is marked on the disc... or where to find or where you buy them... i am in europe, i am belgian but i live in the south of france... the chain saw disc seems very dangerous to me... lol

R Dc lol I agree, that’s why I went with the sanding disk instead of the chain saw disk. The disk I have is called a Frued Diablo steel demon, 40 grit, corner edge design. It’s for metal and stainless steel but works great on wood. Hope that helps

Maybe you said it and I missed it, but can you use food grade mineral oil to finish?

Yes, but you’ll have to reapply often. You can mix or add bees wax over the mineral oil too.

Maxine B I use oil bees wax mix and also use salad bowl finish for cutting boards. It seems to last longer on cutting boards and is safe to eat off.

Mart Ashton hey Mart, thank you again. I absolutely love olive wood. It's my favorite wood, and it is expensive here too. Yet, it is my favorite and when my local wood store has some, I always buy. Lol I sell a spoon like the one in the video for about $35-$45 🇺🇸 depending on the shape and length. Spoons are really fun to make. I have been using the spoon in this video since I made it, and it looks great. Thanks again!

Mart Ashton I don't think I could get the wood cheap enough to sell a spoon for a fiver, not olive wood. I probably could with spoons made from pine here. I visited the UK several years ago and saw some country side near Stratford. Beautiful county with such a rich history. Everyone I met was so nice.

Great information and results. This is the best tutorial I've found on making a grinder jig for spoons. Can you make various bowl shapes by moving the spoon around? Thanks for another video I will take advantage of.

wakely wanderer thank you so much. I'm glad you like the jig. It's a work in progress, but it works great. You can make different bowl shapes by moving the spoons around. I'm also going to use it on other items for coving detail, as in bowls and plates. I may even be able to attach it to the lathe bed. I used a "C" clamp on the spoon. Happy new year my friend. SP Wood Art I made one today in about 3 hours and it tested well. I'm not very organized so I averaged about one trip per hour to the hardware store. I look forward to making my first angle grinder spoon tomorrow. Thanks again.
