Woodturning multi axis Coffee Cup with simple jig on the wood lathe. Or is it a coffee mug?

Woodturning multi axis for the second time where I make a jig for the wood lathe. Making a coffee mug this time, or maybe it´s a coffee cup, or a kuksa.
I thought this technique was for more experienced woodturners but I was excited to see it actually working for a beginner woodturner as well. A fun wood turning project for sure.

I´ve seen @CarlJacobson do this a few years ago and recently I saw @industrialcomfort doing the same. Thank you for the inspiration! :) They use a bit different jigs, both with their advantages. I used the same as Industrial Comfort and it worked well for me.

A simple ring of some kind will do for a stand, or maybe embedded in a saucer. It is quite beautiful as an orb.

I didn't know where that was going. Brilliant! What an awesome unique design! I liked the lighter rim on the cup, kind of made it look like a cappuccino. Be cool to see one where about 1/2" of the rim stays a lighter wood. Thanks for sharing this genius technique! 🧠💥

You could do the bottom of the bowl first and create a base for it to sit on, then reverse it to excavate the inside. I can't figure out how to make a better shaped handle. In either case, especially if you're the beginner you say you are, I'm amazed. I've been watching woodturning videos for a while just because they're so much fun. I think you've finally inspired me to start actually learning to do it myself. 🙂 Most everyone else uses mostly the gouge and only occasionally the skew. You seem to do the opposite and it really looks more efficient, especially those peeling cuts. Does it leave a better finish than the gouge? I really enjoy your channel. Thanks!

Good job and turned out really nice. I found it easier to drill a hole for the handle whilst the two pieces of the jig were still screwed together.

Nice job, though I really liked the two contrasting wood idea, not sure if you meant to remove all the light wood. I'd be tempted to rotate the next one and get a nice off-centre line running through the cup!

He used cheap pine for the half that would just be waste anyway. Saves on cost. He saved himself about $10-$20 of walnut wood chips LOL Great idea! Plus it allows him to use 2" thick walnut which is more readily available.

Great idea and even greater outcome! But shouldn't have sanded a flat plane on the bottom so that you could set it down with liquid in it? Also, what did you finish it with, walnut oil?

Thank you Howard 🤩 The idea is to use it as a kuksa. A cup you bring in your backpack when hiking and things like that. It doesn’t hold a full cup of coffee just enough to keep you warn when outdoors 😆 I used a foodsafe danish oil for finish 👍

I used a foodsafe danish oil on this. I know there are a few other alternatived. Some use foodsafe epoxy to make it completely sealed.

@Nordic Turning I've used it when turning half finials for a Newell post I used paper bag paper and a mixture of half yellow glue and half water. After turning it, I used a sharp chisel and a single sharp hit with a mallet. The residue is easily cleaned off with a scraper.

Why would you waste half the work when you could just have made a simple jig amd sawn it in half on the bandsaw and then have _two_ cups instead of one cup and a heap of shavings?

There are a few reasons why I didn’t make two cups in one go here. I wantet to get the most out of my 5cm walnut piece. Not sure you can see it in the video, but the piece is not mountet on the lathe in the center of the walnut and the sacrificial construction lumber, but off set towards the walnut. It let’s me have a deeper cup and handle. So if I just cut it in half on the bandsaw i would lose 1cm dept in the cup and the handle would be to thin for what I was going for. If I had a 10cm thick walnut piece I would have a different design cup and jig to make the most of the wood. But the sacrificial construction lumber in this one I don’t worry to much about removing. it's a beautiful cup? Mug? Nope, still a scoop, as it has no flat spot to rest on while being filled or in between sips. (like the flat spot on your salt box) I guess, if you had a big communal bowl of coffee, tea or Viking mead you could scoop it out and use this like a cup. No, then it would be a ladle. But. I enjoyed getting another look at the jig. Thanks much 👍

I'm proficient with all the traditional turning tools, including the skew, but I've found that whatever can be done with a skew can also be done efficiently with other tools that are less prone to produce the occasional "catch from hell." The other tools include shear scraping with the bottom wing of a bowl gouge, shear scraping with a traditional scraper, and even cutting with a 3/8" (10 mm) spindle gouge. However, the long point of a skew is excellent for incising a fine line on a spindle or other work piece. You might enjoy Raffan's video, Understanding Woodturning Catches, here on YT on the Finewoodworking channel. Sometimes things don't go as planned, even for a master, which Raffan certainly is. As I said, I can use a skew but I'll go with a "safer" tool whenever possible. I have nothing to prove.

That center-out hollowing is going against the grain, is prone to catching, and leaves a lousy finish. That technique is appropriate for spindle orientation.

José- I am sorry things are not going well for you right now. There is so much bad shit in the world. Too many problems with too few solutions. I know, that when you have big things going on your life, the little things other people spend time doing and watching and commenting on, things that should be irrelevant to you, can seem extra annoying, irksome even. Try to understand that- for some people, it's the 2 hours spent doing or the 10 minutes spent watching something, something that seems pointless, to you, that gets us through all the other big bad bullshit in our lives. Even a hungry kid will kick a ball around for a while, and a baby sick and in pain can be distracted by something shiny, even if it is for only a few moments. So, don't begrudge us our shiny objects. I will be keeping you in my thoughts José. I hope things get better for you. OR that you find the right distraction to take your mind off it all, for a while. Wood turning does not seem to work for you. Maybe search pets on security cameras or look up television shows from your childhood.
