Watching videos is great. But when they are narrated like yours, instructing us beginners is the best. Thank you.

Thank you so much. Mallet turned out to be an unimaginable piece of work. And you have covered at least 10 lessons about tools and methods and the diff between traditional tools and carbide tipped tools. Crisp and clear. Thank you so much.

On a metal turning lathe, carbide loves high speed, on centre line and a decent cut. With just four carbide cutters, most operations are possible. A circular cutter on a curved shaft is great for inside turning. Another plus is the very finish, the inserts are easily sharpened on a fine flat diamond sintered plate, not at all expensive and they retain their sharpness for a long time. 👍🇦🇺

Good Video thank you , no awful music and I like the voice over, much better than trying to do it while working also we have the luxury of a much better explanation of what and how you do things, also the first time I have heard someone from your side of the pond use the word buggered!! I thought we only used that when something goes wrong..... thanks again. ( I'm UK although live in Spain)

Great video, although I would hate damaging the finish on the 'shop mallet'... Thanks sooo much for showing us how to 'step by step' which I appreciate VERY much! Looks like the perfect mallet for wood turners!!! Again, THANKS so much for the great video and your description of what you're turning and finishing the final product! Safe turning to you and yours ALWAYS!

I use a maul like this daily. Mallets are hammer headed; mauls are cylinder headed. The tapered head is great, and the degree of finish beautiful. I would have made the diameter of the front end of the handle smaller, the same as the back end. This will significantly reduce fatigue in your hand and forearm when using it to carve anything where you use repeated blows. You can hold it in a loose cross grip and throw the mallet when the handle is shaped smaller in front.

Sounds good! This video was several years ago, but I still use that ash wood mallet in the shop, no issues other than a few dents. I do want to make a smaller one too. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Hey, thank you. It is comfortable. I made this video awhile ago and have used the mallet quite a bit. Its held up great. It has a few dings, but that's to be expected. The only thing I would change is to put one flat side on the handle end so it doesn't roll on a table. Thanks for watching. Cheers my friend.

Tip: Because this mallet is going to get abused, an oil finish like Watco would have been a better choice. Use the poly finish on things that just sit around. The shape of the mallet turned out great.
@spwoodart
@spwoodart 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Robert, sorry for the delay, your comment was blocked for some reason and I had to approve it. Watco danish oil would have been a good choice. I will try that out next time. So far the mallet has held up well, just a few dings, but that's to be expected. Thank you and thanks for watching my friend. Cheers!

Hi I am BC and I also need a malley how long should I make it? also is hickory a good hard wood to make a malley out of?It looks like you started with a 4x4 maybe 10" long?BC
@spwoodart
@spwoodart 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Betty, my mallet is 10” long. I did start with a 4x4” block of Ash wood. You could use hickory, but it would end up with a bunch of dents. Depends what your going to use it for, chisels, etc. Hickory is a hard wood with strength and great shock absorption. It’s often used for tool handles. thanks for watching.

It looks good but I think I would have rounded the top and bottom of the mallet! It would avoid sharp edges when hammering and chipping out!
@spwoodart
@spwoodart 7 жыл бұрын
Peter Boyd hi, thank you. That's a good idea. I was actually thinking that at the time. Luckily it hasn't chipped and held up well so far. It does have some dents now. Thank again. Cheers!

I believe old bats are made from Ash wood, Hickory wood, or Birch wood. I would say Ash and Hickory could be used for a mallet.
