I've always found it so funny how a certain portion of the fandom was really adamant that Will wasn't gay. And that him being gay would "ruin" the show. His S1 character description is, "a boy with sexual identity issues", he gets called several slurs by his father and the bullies, and Joyce suggests that he's different from other people, the S2 script mentions that in the finale while he's dancing with the girl, he's actually staring at Mike the whole time, and when Mike says, "It's not my fault you don't like girls", apparently, the line originally was supposed to be, "It's not my fault you don't like girls yet". So the Duffer brothers intentionally removed the yet from the equation. Hmm, the creators of the show altering a line in the script to change it from something happening later in life to it never happening at all. And yet people get so upset at the idea of Will not being straight despite it literally being in his character description since the beginning. It didn't come out of nowhere. It's literally always been apart of his character. News flash, he can both be dealing with his trauma AND also potentially like boys. Character can be more than one thing. But anyway, yet another instance of Will Byers being hurt. Whether it's physically, mentally, or emotionally, that boy is always going through some form of turmoil. Haven't liked Mike much this season. But I do appreciate that he biked over to apologize to him in the rain. This is pretty much the first time they've ever fought and you can see how much Mike regrets it.

Thank you! This actually really bothers me. Also if a character's sexuality has never been established (aka they've never showed interests in girls or boys) then there is no way that them being gay or any other sexuality would be out of nowhere because there's nothing to contradict. That's the case with Will. He was never shown to be into girls nor boys. So when it's revealed that he likes boys, it can't come out of nowhere. It's like people think characters need an excuse to be gay or a huge set up like gay people just exist??? Why should a show justify them being gay, like they just are. Viewers don't know who's gay or straight or bi. It's their fault for assuming everyone is straight and then saying "it comes out of nowhere" when they're revealed to be any other sexuality than straight. That's kind of a problematic viewpoint that people don't realize they have. Just like a straight character doesn't need to have a big set up for being straight, a gay character doesn't need one either.
@alexinator-hh5fe
@alexinator-hh5fe Жыл бұрын
@@grace19005 Honestly, yeah. And to elaborate even further, even if a guy character is shown to be into girls doesn't mean that it's "out of character" if they like guys later down the line. Or vice versa. Maybe the character in question thought of someone of the same gender and it made their heart beat in a way they initially thought was platonic but was actually romantic. Maybe they only date people of the opposing gender because society has ingrained into their brain that guys should be with girls, not each other. Maybe that character was bi or pan. People want characters to be so rigid. But that's not how real people are. Imagine if one day someone came up to you and was like, "The way that you're thinking and feeling right now is how you must feel and act for the rest of your life. And if you change even a little bit, you're not being true to yourself". It doesn't make sense.
@troopersicks5824
@troopersicks5824 Жыл бұрын
to be honest, i just put it down to him still being traumatised by the events of season 1 and 2, like he's not really thinking about anyone romantically because he probably still has nightmares and flashbacks to all the stuff that happened to him so far. I don't really go looking into behind the scenes stuff of shows so i didn't know about his character description or that they removed the "yet" from the script. It makes sense now though, they were much more obvious about it in series 4.

Also, in S1 when the group was in the school gym with eleven (when they went to use the radio) and Mike confronted the bullies about laughing during Will's funeral speech, one of the bullies said "He's in the fairyland with the fairies, all happy and gay". That was directly pointed. Like, how could people still be denial.

12:43 Will's reaction to what Mike says to him is so amazingly done (in my opinion) as at least I could immediately tell so many feelings going though his head without him needing to say anything. Also, I am still under the believe that Mike did not mean what he said literally (although Will obviously interpreted it like that in the moment) but simply Missphrase and actually wanted to say something like: "It's not my fault you don't like girls YET"
@islasullivan3463
@islasullivan3463 Жыл бұрын
I don’t think so, given how Mike’s father has made a kinda homophobic comment when Will was taken and given that it’s the 80’s, I don’t think it’s a stretch that he might have some prejudices (obviously he doesn’t hate gay people has some biases that he needs to reflect on, given how he immediately realizes that what he said wasn’t ok, and was being a jerk)
@latech7671
@latech7671 Жыл бұрын
@@islasullivan3463 my perspective is this (I should say this is not on any real experience because I haven't lived in the 80s): I think we can assume that most people would at first be homophobic in the 80s (if they didn't have any experience with actually knowing LGBTQ People) and I do think that being LGBTQ was generally seen as bad, either because you were homophobic or because you knew how hard it would be for the person you knew was LGBTQ in society. Let's add to that the fact that because this topic was still very much not tolerated in society, general society was simply not very informed in general MOST OF ALL children. So, because of two factors I think basically nobody suspects Will to be gay (especially Mike) till even the end of season 4 (except Jonathan of course): 1. Because you were simply not as informed you knew less about LGBTQ 2. When it comes to people we have known well for a long time we usually don't presume the worst (again, the worst probably doesn't mean homophobia in this case but simply that in the current society Will is worse of by being gay) 3. Because of the society in the 80s exposure to LGBTQ People was minimal for the general society giving the illusion that they were far fewer than they actually were These three points combined make if (at least for me) pretty reasonable why Mike would not suspect Will to be gay in this moment. If we now take additional material after this scene (and season) into account I think it is even more obvious as the whole of Season 4 Mike is completely oblivious to the fact that Will has a crush on him and even oblivious that on two separate occasions Will almost came out to him. If he would have known since this scene already I would have expected him to help Will in at least some way to come out to him or at least encourage him by validating his feelings Man, this has become a long comment 😬

@@latech7671 To clarify my point I don't think Mike suspects Will is gay just that he implying that he is acting like he is. A lot of times people would put down others like "man that's gay" even at others they presume are straight.

@@latech7671 I was born in 1971 and believe it or not, am the same age as the kids in this show. (Freaks me out a little.. haha) Anyway, I had a cursory knowledge of what a homosexual was in elementary school, but by middle school I knew of teachers who were unspokenly gay. I graduated in 1989 with several classmates who came out, and I was going to gay night clubs because the music was better and guys weren't trying to rub up against me while I was trying to dance. My mom was born in 1950 in a TINY town in Kansas. They also grew up with knowledge of homosexuality. It was not spoken of in public, but the townspeople were tolerant and understanding of its gay citizens. So I think it depends on the city, but in my experience, I learned about the LGBTQ+ community and became an ally on an age-appropriate journey as I grew up. I acknowledge that homophobic, racist and so many other anti- people did and do exist, and that I gave a specific and by-no-means blanketly true account of the 80s as a whole, but I did want to give you another perspective :) Also, I believe that Mike knew Will was probably gay, but never asked him. All of season 4, Mike was physically and emotionally awkward around Will because he didn't know how to act without possibly sending Will mixed signals. He chose to act oblivious, as he didn't know how to talk about Will's crush without hurting his feelings. Remember, Jane sent Mike a letter sharing how everyone was doing? In it, she said that Will was painting a picture for someone he likes. Mike knew what that painting meant. Anyway, these are my takes as an old fart from the 80s. Hope you didn't take offense to any of it, as that was not my intention. Gen X out

@@punkrockpollyanna7829 Very well worded and honestly love that positive story (I think we all need more positivity in your lives). I think we will get the answers to weather Mike knew about Will having a crush on him in Season 5 I presume. Right now, I can see it going both ways. I can definitely see some signals that he might have known about it (like him being very awkward around Will) but I also see parts I think are indicators he has no idea (again, I think Will made it clear multiple times that he wanted to talk about him being different but Mike not only didn't respond to them but in case of Will talking about his feelings to Mike from El's view he even seemed to genuinely think Will was only talking about his relationship with El at that point - he was more comforted after that conversation which he shouldn't be if he understood what Will was also talking about). Right now I mainly credit their awkwardness to the fact that they are two previously "Best Friends" who haven't seen each other in a long time and also haven't kept in touch that much making them very estranged and not knowing anymore what the other person is truly like these days. At least that would also be my first behaviour around somebody like that.

I really feel for Will, and how his childhood has been so heavily impacted by the upside down. This situation where he is uniquely affected, but has to move on with his life somehow really sucks, so he's relying on what he knows: DnD. That doesn't mean was a good idea to force his friends to play DnD when they've been saying for days they don't want to. Expecting them to have a good attitude and really get into the game when they had repeatedly said they weren't interested is unreasonable. It reminds me of how I felt about Hopper and El last season. It was an impossible situation: staying alone in a cabin for a year is extremely difficult for any child, and Hopper doesn't have the training to parent an abused child, let alone one with superpowers. The situation sucked, but Hopper letting his anger get the best of him and expecting El to respond well to shouting and name calling was unreasonable.

The thing about Nancy being so “selfish” is that she’s not. She’s actually right about her lead and no one is taking her seriously, including Johnathan, meanwhile she is actually on to something. She’s fighting for what she believes in and all the men who have the power around her are ignoring her, including her own boyfriend who is actively trying to stop himself from being just as big of an ahole as the guys they work with. You can see on Johnathan’s face he wants to tell her that her lead is stupid and is a dead end, meanwhile she’s the only one who is actually right and is taking the rat situation seriously. Nancy is my favorite character for her intense action in what she believes in and I tend to think if her character was a boy, no one would call her out for being selfish or blunt with her feelings; they’d just think she’s a go getter who stands up for what she believes in even in the face of people she loves not supporting her as much as they could. Johnathan’s brother was taken by a giant otherwoldly monster and somehow rabid rats are where he can’t suspend his disbelief?

She can still be blinded by her pursuit of the truth tho, like she tends to neglect the people with her even if it’s by accident(Jonathan, with his pictures/job, leaving that friend of hers alone at a place where someone was just murdered lmao), she’s a complex character because of her flaws
@kikiwannabananawatermelonmango
@kikiwannabananawatermelonmango Жыл бұрын
@@jigglejaggle697 (Spoilers for s3 and s4 ahead) Thanks for responding, and so respectfully, too. For sure; agreed that she did ditch her friend for a boy and she’s not thinking of Johnathan or his job at the Hawkins Post as much as she should as his girlfriend. I do think both of those things show who Nancy is now vs in season 1. Once Barb disappeared, she started fighting for the greater good instead of worrying about what a boy (Steve) and everyone else thought of her, and I think her want for knowledge and to fight against a greater evil in season 3 overshadows her care for Johnathan’s job at the Hawkins Post. She does care for him, clearly, but she’s also going to do her own thing with or without him; she gives him the chance to not go with her at one point. Of course, it’s easier said than done; she is his girlfriend so he clearly doesn’t want to ditch her. I can see both sides of it especially when Johnathan shares how difficult it is for him being from a low income household. I don’t think her wanting justice over caring for how it affects her personal relationships is a new thing; she was the same in season 2 and she’s the same in season 4. I just think people dog on her a bit too much considering how much work she does while we’re focused on her during season 3. I think season 5 will give Nancy the last bit of development she needs to realize who she’s fighting this evil for and that thinking more about what other people want + fighting for the greater good can exist mutually.

@@MicroSausage They should be a couple eps ahead by the time this was uploaded so hopefully wouldn’t be spoiled. But yeah, still a shitty thing to put in the comments

Hopper is my favorite character I just love him so much! I’ve been attached to him since ep 1 for season I don’t even know why Poor guy is trying to navigate parenthood alone when he’s used to having a wife to help Scared of having his new daughter taken away from him or taken advantage of by some teenage boys And torn with his love for Joyce I’m pretty sure it was his girlfriend in high school or something He just needs love to help put his broken self back together. He deserves to be happy.
