This week on SpyCast, Andrew is joined by The Honorable Leon E. Panetta, this year’s recipient of the International Spy Museum’s The Honorable William H. Webster Distinguished Service Award.
In this episode, Secretary Panetta discusses his decades of experience working within the public service field, examining the many ways that intelligence has been critical to his roles as Secretary of Defense, Director of the Central Intelligence Agency, White House Chief of Staff, and Chair of the House Budget Committee, among others. Tune in to hear insights from a son of Italian immigrants who went on to hold some of the most powerful seats in international government.
And…
One of Secretary Panetta’s constant companions during his time as Secretary of Defense and Director of the CIA was his golden retriever, Bravo. Panetta is quoted to have said that Bravo kept him calm and grounded during times of crisis, and as a critical piece of his career, Bravo is seen at the side of the Secretary in his official DoD and CIA portraits. And no, Bravo never leaked a word from the high-level briefings he sat in on.

Thank you Congressman Panetta for your years of service and appearance on this show. We are sorely miss mature, knowledgeable steadyhanded men like you in government. Thank you for getting Bin Laden. On a personal note, I wanted to thank you and you Congressional office for your help back at the end of 1988 and your assistance with my exit from the Army. I was just about to get out of the Army and unfortunately was living in a quad room at Presidio of Monterey with a young soldier who severely beat and nearly killed a female soldier. I barely knew the roommate because he was attending language school and I was working on post. The CID decided to hold everyone roommates, friends of hers and his from leaving until the Monterey county trial(he was caught in the act attacking her off base). So I was held on base past my exit date by several mths. I pleaded with Army to let me out to no avail. Finally, I went and told my story to your office. About a week later, my commander summoned me to his office and reemed me out . Wow, that Commander was so pissed, I can still hear him shouting "DO you know what you have done. Congressman Leon "Fucking" Panetta!!!Really!!! he hates the military. You started a shit storm when you went to his office. The Congressman was screaming at the Secretary of Defense that the Army was holding you hostage,. The Secretary of Defense screamed at the Secretary of Defense who screamed on down the chain of command down to me. All that shitstorm rolled down to me and I dont like being covered in shit. SO pack your bags, Your out of here and good luck, Son. Your gonna need it" 2days later I was in my car leaving post. Thanks Congressman Leon Panetta
