@fulie1 All Spyderco UF sharpening stones (rods, 2in., & 3in.) are the same. In fact, the difference between the FINE and ULTRA FINE Spyderco sharpening products is that the UF ones are surface ground or lapped (using diamond, if I recall correctly) for the final finishing effect -- hence the swirl pattern that appears as the stone loads up with steel particles. They are both made of the same high alumina ceramic material.

Chris1992usa so if you had to lap it, would it take away the ultra fine finish?

I have a 13K Sigma stone, and I usually use the Spyderco ultrafine after the Sigma. The Spyderco is extremely smooth, and I only use it and the Sigma for sharpening razors. I would only use the medium or maybe the fine for knives though. I think the Spyderco ceramic stones are probably the best stones you can buy, although I think you still need a rougher stone for bevel setting and chip repair. Thanks to jdavis882 for your vids on these stones they helped in my decision to buy them. Thank you.
@jdavis88213 жыл бұрын
@fulie1 Yeah they are the same grit. The numbers in front of the UF indicate which stone it is. The UF rods are all the same, just different shapes and sizes. Excellent stones I must say!
@jdavis88213 жыл бұрын
@knivesandstuff No the edges are not chamfered at all, and I have the same problem that you do. They could definitely improve the stone by rounding that edge off.
@Chris1992usa13 жыл бұрын
@jonjonnu The UF rods and this stone are the same. Using them can be quite different though. You can use the pair of UF stones in the bottomside of the Sharpmaker base. However, that is significantly slimmer, and less stable, than a single stone like the 306UF. It is a great stone for free-hand sharpening if you are going to do that.

I've been using this stone for a couple months now. Hands down, my favorite stone to date. I picked it up used off Ebay for $64. Probably the best $64 I've ever spent.
@jdavis88213 жыл бұрын
@oromoto It is excellent for touch ups. Takes no time at all to bring the edge back to hair splitting sharp.

@victorinoxfan Yeah it does a great job at touching up edges.

@jonjonnu I am pretty sure this is a level above the rods. I THINK this is comparable to 6000 grit or something, while the UF rods are 1800 or 2000. The UF rods I think are numbered 302UF where this stone is 306UF. It is confusing because they are both labeled UF "ultra fine." Someone please correct me if I am wrong.
@jdavis88213 жыл бұрын
@jonjonnu Yeah the rod is the same thing. As far as buying it or not, that's up to you. I probably wouldn't unless you do a lot of free hand sharpening.

@racerx32 You're very welcome man. Let me know how you like it. :)

@TheNeedyCat Yes that would give you a fairly good polish, but it may still have some haze in it because 1-6 thousand is a big jump.

So if i got one of these, and that strop you did a vid of. Would that be good for keeping a knife sharp?
@edcevo30525 жыл бұрын
I use dmt diamond stones from course to x fine, then the spyderco 306u and it’s a mirror after that but sometimes I go onto polishing tape then kangaroo leather strop with .5 micron diamond paste. This stone is my favorite stone though! Well worth the money!
@fulie113 жыл бұрын
@Chris1992usa Interesting, I thought there was a grit difference in the 302 UF and the 306 UF. I'll have to check where I saw that.

are the edges chamfered? I have the 8x2" and I find that the edges of the stone kind of grind into the knife edge in a way I dont like.. but my medium stone doesn't

I have a Spyderco endura 4 with vg-10 steel and for the life of me can't get it sharp. I have several knifes such as benchmades kershaws and sogs. I have no issue getting them respectably sharp. I really enjoy your videos and I'm gonna give this stone a try thank you!

JOSH Pittman what stones do you have and what are the steels of the other knives you mentioned
@jdavis88213 жыл бұрын
@WhoaThereHorse This stone isn't really meant for recurves. It would be nearly impossible I think. Spyderco makes stones suited for that purpose though.

If I didn't buy an 8000 grit waterstone I would have picked this up instead. I love using the Ultra Fine rods for honing my knives. Really brings them back

Excellent! it helps me for sure, I'm going to pick one up, I was thinking of getting different grit Japanese water stones, all the way up to 12000, but I'll hold off for now and practice with the ceramic stone, thanks for the recommendation :) . Have a good one

How would you sharpen knives with re-curves with this stone?
@joesquat289111 жыл бұрын
is there any difference between this and the 302 UF benchstone besides size?
@jdavis88213 жыл бұрын
@sasquatch446 It would be excellent for maintaining the edge. As long as you keep the knife sharp with the stone and strop you could keep it hair popping almost indefinitely. It would eventually (like years) need a reprofile. In which case you could send it to spyderco or someone like me to lay the edge back. :)

@Kahrrr Complement it as in a lower grit? You can't go wrong with the Spyderco Profile set. I have it too. If you are interested I could do a video on those as well. Spyderco makes great stones. Not a lot of people know, but they actually started making sharpening stones way before they started making knives. They do it right. :)

I find that after using this stone on my butcher, cimeter and french knives, using a diamond steel and a multi cut steel gives outstanding razor sharp results....I also have and use DMT diamond stones and Smith's diamond stones...
@jdavis88213 жыл бұрын
@TheNeedyCat That's a big jump, but I think it would give you a fairly good polish. May not be full mirror status, but it would be pretty damn close.

Do you have/own a Novaculite Stone (Arkansas). MIne is about 1200-1400 grit and it feels like the knives get sharper with that then the Spyderco ceramic

Nice video. I love ceramic as a sharpening media,no mess and a great edge. One question, is it totally smooth, I have used a couple of different ceramic rods that have bumps in them. The bumps have a smooth finish, but I hate the feeling of them, always have to turn the rod to find a bump free area. Thanks.

@DANVIIL11 жыл бұрын
I have this stone and the medium Spyderco stones and they don't compare to a Shapton Ceramic Water Stones. The stone in the video is only for polishing and removes almost no metal, so I'm ready to sell my stone from Spyderco.

Are stones like these easy to snap? I want to buy something like these for bigger kitchen knives like a Chinese cleaver, but I tend to use a bit of pressure so I worry it may crack the stone...
@InsanelyMclean7 жыл бұрын
I know this is a super late reply, but for anyone who might be curious: As long as you have the entire stone supported on a flat surface (Spyderco recommends using the leather pouch as a non slip base {works great btw}) you will never be able to apply enough pressure to break or damage the stone. You'd break the knife first.

like commentators said. this stone does not do the entire sharpening job. it makes a sharp knive super sharp. From me experience with my 306UF I'd say when you are finished with a 800-1000 grip waterstone the 306UF can be the next level an subtitute a 5000-10000+ grit waterstone. The only other stones I have are waterstones so you have to translate the grit values accordingly.
