I picked up this knife a few months ago and I absolutely love it. The flipper tab compression lock combo is pretty good once you figure it out!

Thank you for all the great knife reviews! When I first saw the Amalgam I was instantly drawn to the blade shape & design. But after watching a few video reviews who all liked this knife more than they thought they would but were detoured due to the flipper & compression lock combo & overall length.I started having second thoughts. But I sat on buying it for a while & after really debating it, I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s not a problem for me. Either I can just move my index finger when closing the knife or close it like a liner lock knife & the length isn’t an issue for me, thickness & weight is an issue for me when carrying a folder.I was pretty disappointed In myself for taking on everyone else’s cons for the knife & making them my own. I respect,value & appreciate your knowledge & opinion. But I have to remember what I view as pros & cons because I may have different views of what’s bad or good for my needs.I feel to many people automatically shoot down a knife or give it high praise without ever actually holding or using a knife for themselves. Which is a huge injustice to the blade & ourselves. But then again.... who the hell am I? Any hoot .. thank you brother & I can’t wait to put this blade through its paces.

This one and the Kapara are two of my recent Spyderco favorites along with the trusty PM2, Shaman, and Sage 5. I do love larger knives.

How do I close my Amalgam? I hold it at a 75 to 80 degree angle, press the compression lock and as soon as the blade starts dropping, I let go of it. I can snap-close it but I don't need to. I just let the blade freefall to it's closed position.

We all know you meant Amalgam in the intro.. The compression lock and flipper tab is not a good combination, at least for me. That's why I didn't get the Mantra 3.

It's a Spyderco design that isn't offensive, but that flipper tab could be ground off and the compression lock would be very nice. And you do need a blooper reel. :)

Looking for cheap alternative to the Amalgam. Preferably same blade shape and size also a flipper. Any thing in the $75 price range come to mind?

Wow, a Spyderco with a sharpening choil! I agree with what you saying about the blade/lock when closing. Not the only Spyderco with that issue. Just don't have a flipper, if you use that lock, Spyderco (like the Kapara). Just my opinion. Thanks for the review Mr. Dicey!

I get what your saying about the 2 step process to close is what we do with most knives but that’s why we love the compression lock, that it is a one step smooth close, it’s a fail for me and I don’t get it.

You can fit a lynch clip on the amalgam but for some reason the screws that come with the clips wont work you have to reuse the original screws.

I picked this up last weekend, I liked it.. But it didn't do anything for me. Mine had an extremely weak detent and didn't flip at all. I took it back and traded it for a techno 2 which I like much more.

I think measuring thickness behind the edge is more important to me than the thickness of the spine. Just a personal preference after watching neroknives.

I did do that. It's between 19 and 20 thousandths. I mentioned it in the video. It's a tricky one to measure, so I rarely do it on camera. I only measured the spine on camera because stats are wrong on a few sites.

If only there was someone who would listen and propose one to Spyder...ohhhhhhh. =P But seriously, I do think a smaller version is a good idea. It's not lost on me that this is a pretty big knife =)

I was kinda disappointed in the spyderco releases this year. I dont think I bought any 2018 spyderco's except the m4 para 3 from blade hq. The kappa and amalgam are too big for me. The brouwer they screwed the clip position up even worse than the para 3 and s30v for 175+ = no from me and the mcbee or whatever is LOL. People bashed on ZT for their releases this year at least I got the 0470 which is an amazing knife.

It ticks all the wrong boxes for me. A little too expensive for what it is. I'd at least have wanted 3D contoured CF scales. Even better would have been their wire clip, which Tai Chung does well. I'm not opposed to a big knife (carried a Police Tuffram for years) but it seems like an 'also ran' rather than something special.

Man I waited for this too come out forever kinda of bummed I dont like it as much as I thought I would. The detent is so much weaker than on all of my spydercos. If it was as strong as the pm2 even it would be awesome

I just don't understand why people like the large pointy flipper stud sticking out of the flippers... Seems it would be uncomfortable in the pocket. I rarely see much mention of the flipper stud , I guess that just goes with the flipper style of knife. I don't use pocket clips. Lost two knives over the last 14 years. Not happening again.

Well that's disappointing, I thought a compression lock flipper would rival buck marksman strap lock, manual button lock or axis style lock flipper. Something like the marksman, protech cambria, crkt tighe tac two and SOG terminus flipper. And calm down spyderco fans, no need to be obnoxious and leave me a bunch of replies about how awesome spyderco is.
