Great video. Confirms a number of thoughts i already had in my mind. First that the initial knives were very likely made by Moki in Seki City, as this was also Al Mar’s manufacturer. Second, the early prototype was based on the Silver Bird series of Seki City knives. I carried both a Silver Tern pocket knife and an early Spyderco (FRN, no clip, half serrated, Seki City made) twenty plus years ago. I still have the Spyderco, and released a video about it a week or so ago, on my KZbin channel. Interestingly, the pivot rivet is very like the style used on traditional Japanese higonokami knives. The one piece moulding and one hand opening, are also evocative of the Higonokami.

Thank you Spyderco for making good quality knives most anyone can afford. The Para 3 LW for example. Mainly got it because I couldn’t afford a 940 however it’s now my favorite knife I ever had and you gained a loyal customer. What a wonderful tool. And this BD1N is great steel. Easy to maintain.

lol I mean, one hand operation folders easily make up 90% or more of the folding knife market these days, so id say Sal was certainly onto something and the spydie hole was totally a revolutionary invention at the time and still is among one of the best folder knife opening methods to this day.... Its jsut a fact that certain companies have had major impacts on the industry, Buck for example many often credit with having invented the lock-back knife, which isnt the case at all but they were the first company to make lock-back knives affordable to the masses and the legendary Buck 110 was birthed and soon would for ever be known as the quintessential traditional lock back. Now to understand spydercos impact you most keep in mind that traditional folding knives are opened using nail-nicks, or slots where the user's fingernail would enter to pull the blade out of the handle (Buck 110). This became somewhat cumbersome and required use of two hands, so there were innovations to remedy that. The thumb-stud, was one such innovation and the thumb hole was another, love it or hate it the spydie hole excels at its intended purpose, providing one handed operation of a folding knife. but I believe the spydie hole is still patent protected to this day... so vary few makers outside of spyderco actually use it, though spyderco has allowed some makers to use the design elements over the years and companies like giantmouse are starting to do similar hole opening knives (dont know giantmouse history and whether or not theres actually a close connection with spydercos at all, I just known its one of the few production knives using a blade hole opening system.) but the real major spyderco innovation and industry contribution that put them on them on the map was the "clip it" pocket knives... which vary clearly revolutionized the industry... i mean, how many pocket knives do you see sold without a pocket clip these days?.. not to many, its basically just the traditional slipjoint style of pocket knives, swiss army knives and keychain knives... otherwise the majority of folding pocket knives are sold with pocket clips these days and spyderco led that industry change, infact I believe at one point other companies had to go through spyderco to license the use of a pocket clip, its one of the reasons the market became so heavily saturated by just a handful of pocket clip designs... for a long time they were all being manufactured by spyderco and licensed out to other companies. Like it or not its a fact that most folks into folding knives these days want a fidgety one handed operation style of pocket knife... and that trend began with companies like Spyderco who are still among the leaders of knife innovations to this day
