First Gen maxamet was very chippy, spyderco quickly dialed in heat treat protocol that corrected the chipping and made a wonderful user steel. If you enjoy a bitey aggressive working edge maxamet is pretty much at the top of the heap along with Zmaxx both being top of the pile mega wear resistant steels that have crazy working edge retention, they just cut and cut and cut and when they start to fall off just cut a little more to expose more carbide and they will cut some more. I love maxamet and Zmaxx they are amazing user steels maxamet being my fav of the two.

I like Maxamet too, I bought a Spyderco Native 5 at a discount from DLTTrading. I’ve owned several Maxamet blades from Spyderco and honestly my biggest gripe is that some of the knives I’ve gotten have defects (from Spyderco) such as cracked blades and chipped edges. I otherwise think Maxamet is an awesome steel and great for EDC and everyday use.

My maxamet para 3 is my favorite para 3 - love the patina (more of an oil slick and takes a while to come in) and love the steel. Never have oiled mine. It takes time and patience to sharpen but if you strop it from time to time it is just fine. S110V is way more chippy and difficult to manage for me

I have a Spyderco Native 5 in Maxamet as a backup knife and its a great knife. For me Maxamet isn’t as “chippy” or brittle as some people say, BUT I have noticed that some Maxamet blades from Spyderco can and do have defects such as cracked blades or chipped edges from the factory. It’s best to inspect your blade for defects.

It was established 3 years ago throughout the entire community... first few runs of maxamet, Spyderco had an issue of "burning" the edges making them "chippy" as well as with the M4.

I've got a PM2 and a Sage 3 in Maxamet and love them both. Only chipping problem was when I inadvertently smacked the edge of the Sage into a porcelain tile, but my bad ... that's going to chip any wear resistant steel.

I’ve always heard good thing about Maxamet but I could see why some wouldn’t prefer it for the downsides it does have. Like any other steels they all have ups and downs. Interested to see how this goes.
@865knives2 жыл бұрын
Great thoughts on maxamet. I've had no chipping myself. Although I've seen two be dropped and tips broken off. Rust has not been an issue with maxamet either actually I have more rusting issues with m4. Same result patina wise with mine just a smoke color with hints of blue. Great content. Love hearing your perspective from your field of use.

So are the newer blades less chippy because they heat treated it to a lower hardness? Resulting in less edge retention?

I still EDCi my knives, especially the Maxamet. I've only had to strop a few times in the past year. Mine has stained a bit, not alarming at all, known going in. It's just not a stainless steel. No big deal. Nice mottled/matte patina developing. I appreciate your harder testing for my education. Thanks

The maxamet para 3 I had stropped up so easily it caught me off guard lol. I was expecting to need diamond stones to get it shaving sharp, again.
@beyproctor76732 жыл бұрын
Maxamet Para3 for the win! Yeah. I love mine because it gets and stays sharper than any other knife. Mine came from Spyderco sharp but the bevel had a funny wavy pattern all the way down it. I put a fresh edge on it and it was popping hairs sharp. It is amazing that you can receive a brand new sharp knife ready to slice and it will actually get even sharper with a little touch like that. Put a fresh edge on yours for the testing and it will blow through everything. Thanks for taking a moment to recognize our fallen soldiers at the beginning.

I guess the true meaning of the Memorial Day is how reconciliation took place after the war and animosity. The wonen of the fallen veterans of the south decorated their graves as well as the graves of their northern fallen enemies and compatriots. This generous gesture was captured and embodied by Finch’s poem that became the rhyme of the memorial day and the epitome of reconciliation and mutual pardon culminating in General Logan establishment of the day as an official holiday and celebrating the veterans and more so the reconciliation of the entire country to be the great one that is today.

Prior to watching the video, I can say my para three in maxamet holds a great edge but is definitely chippy. I used it to cut some weeds out of my parents backyard( in DG) and definitely lost the tip and some of the edge around it to the rocks

I came across your channel recently when it was mentioned by another YT knife viewer. I have to say I find your perspective refreshing. While I don’t use my knives and multi tools as hard as you do, I buy them to use, not to display them in a glass case and admire while sipping brandy. If collectors want to do that, handling thousand-dollar knives while wearing white cotton gloves, that’s fine, but the channels with these tendencies never felt like a good fit for me. Thank you, from those of us who wear gloves to protect our hands, not to keep fingerprints off of safe-queen blades.

I was cutting tall weed and with my para3 in maxament scrap a red brick. I was "f@#k" , but check the blade and almost no damage. The noise scraping the brick scared me, thinking of the worst chip damage. But only a small chip.

I’ve always wondered this: if maxamet is a high speed tool steel, how and why would it have a burnt edge? It’s meant to hold its temper even in extreme heat

Love my maxamet pm2, don't abuse it and if memory serves its the second highest steel for edge retention only beaten by one of the Rex metals I can't remember at the moment. S90v is still a cheaper, great option if cost is a factor.

Probably just spyderco dialing in heat treat. Shun is a brand notorious for chippy knives because they are a shit company but spyderco is no joke when it comes to getting things right. Burnt edge could have been the culprit as well during sharpening from factory.
