If you look closely at a Spyderco Para 3 MAXAMET (and probably other models) blade, you will see that the surface was not ground, like most lesser steels. Rather, it is MACHINED. You might want a magnifier, but you should see that the milling lines are extremely fine, but also extremely regular, as we would expect from machining, not from grinding. I have also noticed this on other hard, exotic steels used by Spyderco, including K390 and possibly others (some are so fine, it, it’s hard to be sure without careful examination). This is, apparently, the special treatment that allows Spyderco to successfully work Maxamet and other difficult steels.

Just bought the Para 3 Maxamet on Tuesday. Ordered a stonewashed Lynch clip for it. My new favorite EDC.

Yeah man, that’s a good setup. Maxamet is an amazing steel and the Para 3 is a great platform for it.

Hey X4cto, I just ordered the Kershaw Highball. It is my first purchase in starting my knife collection. My next purchase would be some sort of sharpening device. I saw your video on the "wicked Edge". Is that something you would recommend for a novice like me? Thanks
@sinrik774 жыл бұрын
I suggest something cheaper. Like edge pro apex, Lanskey pro or even a crockstick system
@X4CTO4 жыл бұрын
Well if the Highball is your first of many then you are starting out on the right track because it’s a great knife in any collection if you ask me. I would highly recommend the Wicked Edge if you don’t mind the price and plan to get and maintain a lot of knives and want the repeatability of a guided system, however I started on a Lansky Crock Stick setup for like 13 dollars. It gave decent results and then I went a Spyderco Sharpmaker and got very good results and really started learning sharpening better. I got a Wicked Edge as a trade one day and used it a lot and loved it, but I sold it a few years ago because I just found myself going to the Sharpmaker more. Now I am doing everything non-guided or freehand I guess you would say, and I love the edges I get that way. The guided systems are great for beginners because of that repeatability, but on the other hand they can make you lazy and some people develop bad habits with them over learning how to use a non-guided system. I like to remove as little material as possible from my blades to prolong their lifespan so I like non-guided systems the most. Things like belt sharpeners and wheels make me cringe to thing about sharpening on. The reason I always liked the Wicked Edge over the others is because it was extremely precise and repeatable, the others had more room for error. So like I said, if you are going to plan on doing a lot of knives in the future the Wicked Edge is the one for that, faster and more precise than the others for sure. If you just want to maintain your edges then they’ll all work decently. If you really want to learn freehand techniques then the Sharpmaker can sort of grow with you but it requires a little larger learning curve. They’re all a little bit different and there’s really no right or wrong way to sharpen, but your skills you develop will determine the edges you get on any setup. Everyone argues about which is better and so on, but I haven’t heard too many people able to argue the precision of the Wicked Edge systems, just cost a lot. The only people I have heard complain about the Sharpmaker are the people how don’t know how to properly use it and those same people used to come on my videos telling my I’m doing it wrong when I tried to show them the correct way. LOL. Now I’m rambling, but man I’d be glad to help you with any system you are looking at if you have any other questions. Hopefully I haven’t made this too confusing, sometimes I dump a little too much info at once. HAHA.

I would love to see this steel in the lightweight version. I am seriously thinking of getting the Spy27 LW and Maxamet and swap the blades ... I just prefer the LW feel in hand (handle shape and weight / center of mass)
@yankee2yankee21611 ай бұрын
According to NS, blades are (usually) interchangeable between G-10 (regular) and FRN (lightweight) versions. The only real problem might be in fitting the lock bar to the tang. It will typically be close. Not sure what to do if it doesn’t quite fit…

I rarely buy 2 of the same knife but my Paramax is in the mail if they had ditched the lanyard hold and included a DC clip this knife would be EXTREMELY hard to beat as a an EDC no matter what steel they produced it in
@jeffjuice38864 жыл бұрын
I've been debating getting the rex45 version, but having another para vs spending a bit more for a newer knife like we snecx mini buster or reate jack 2, makes it tough. Granted I don't have the cash for any of those atm anyway lol. I agree with you on the clip deal. Not to mention that lanyard tube is always so precisely fit, that when you disassemble and clean the knife its a pain to do a full clean.
@X4CTO4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I really like Rex 45 myself, I have review on my Native 5 in Rex 45 coming next I think. It is hard to justify getting the same knife in a different steel indeed, especially when there are so many new designs to try out. I have to really like the steel being offered to do that. Oh yeah, don’t even get me started on those press fit lanyard tubes, I would rather just have an extra set of screws and a standoff than to have to deal with those every time... a pain is correct. Have to find something to tap them out from the inside so you don’t gouge the tube with pliers, ugh!

I have a few Para 3s, all customized with better scales, etc., and I like them as much as any of my other (extensive collection of high end) knives. They are not quite as refined as the best knives, and the Spydie Hole gives the blade an odd shape, but I find that acceptable, given that readily available spare parts make them almost infinitely repairable and that the SH works so well. I LOVE that I can so easily improve on the stock G-10 scales, clip, etc. from a huge range of aftermarket scales and other parts! I have a row of 12 Par 3s in front of me, all the same model, yet customized, they are (almost) as different as if they were different makers…

I have a 1000/6000 grit waterstone, a leather strop, a DMT continuous coarse stone, and a DMT continuous fine stone. Would this be enough to sharpen maxamet??
@X4CTO4 жыл бұрын
Absolutely it would, it's the consistency more so than the surfaces that really refines your edges. That being said, of course you will need materials sufficient enough that you're not fighting the edge constantly. DMT diamonds are good, they will definitely do the job on Maxamet. I have a set of KME diamonds and DMT's that I've used on my Maxamet Manix LW (haven't had to sharpen up my Para 3 yet at all) and they do an amazing job. I like to make sure I get my edges as sharp and as straightened out as I can at the lower grits and then just use the following higher grits to refine the edge more and more as I go, but all the real work is done at your coarser grits when working with the harder steels (actually pretty much any steel, but harder ones in particular). If I remember correctly the DMT coarse is roughly equivalent to around 300 grit (don't quote me though) so that's a pretty coarse setup. I might recommend getting a little more coarse for any real serious sharpening with your steels in the 63 HRC and above range... maybe a DMT Extra Coarse or Extra Extra for the tough jobs and reprofiling and the like. For bringing an edge back on Maxamet however, 300 grit diamonds will do that if you do your part with the consistency of angle (sharpie trick is a real help with that).

What about a vid on edc fixed blades?
@X4CTO4 жыл бұрын
The only fixed blades I currently own are of the defensive category, I never really carried a lot of them for EDC tasks. I have reviewed some in the past but I’m primarily a folder guy. Now if someone were to send me some nice EDC fixed blades to review, however, I would do so and give my opinions of them just like any others.

@X4CTO4 жыл бұрын
I agree with you on that, it would make a hell of a utility blade. Since the Yojimbo is a defensive knife I don’t know if they would ever go that route, but they certainly should because some of us see the Yojimbo platform as an excellent utility option as well.
