Benchmade is nice, but damn, the ergonomics on that Spyderco are on point! It feels as if Spyderco makes their knives to fit perfectly into my hand. I'll take Spyderco over Benchmade any day.

I went to a knife store today with the intention to buy a bugout. I never handled one, and I’ve never owned a spyderco or handled one for that matter. I walked away with a Para 3 g10 with CPM s45vn. The bugout just felt so cheap to me, too light. They’re beautiful, but I personally don’t like them. I get why people do, I just don’t.

As someone who also owns both knives, the Bugout wins for me all day. I love the Para 3 in hand but hate it in the pocket. The Bugout feels great both ways and is more customizable. Not saying you are wrong by any means. Just my $.02

Excellent video. Both knives are excellent for EDC. Personally I think the Para 3 is easier to mod. You get used to dealing with the lanyard hole. The pocket clip from the Para 3 is a great tool to use to pry the G10 scales off of the knife. I think the Para 3 has more options for modification. Knives Plus offers acid stone washing for the blade. DLT Trading, Knives Plus, Sharp Dressed Knives, RGT and Metin Boss offer excellent scales for the Para 3 one of the best tips for the Para 3 is to sand the lanyard hole on new scales. It helps the lanyard hole fit better. It is a ton of fun to customize both knives. And it is wort the effort to have a EDC knife that is uniquely your own

I still have the original pocket clip on my para3 and it doesn’t bother me at all. It’s tough enough for I kno it’s not gonna fall out, and I personally like having a little more of the knife to grab onto when I go to pull it out of my pocket

Also having the clip slightly further down makes the knife much more comfortable to hold. Deep carry clips are nice, but for a real working knife the Spydie clips are great.

I like the para 3 better. Maxamet is sweet but can chip. Had a small chip on the top of spine on the tip. Tip is intact but I had to sand the spine down slightly to blend it back in. Would’ve gone with m390 if I could go back. Para 3 all the way tho. Much bigger than I expected as well. Love it. My rotation is the kapara, para 3, and Sonoma

I don't know if this is something that others care about, but personally I value the steel choice in the Para 3. Outside of the Gold Class, you are stuck with S30V on a bugout. The Para 3 is available in CTS-BD1N, S30V, S35VN, S110V, Maxamet, and many other sprint runs that can be found on the secondary market. Personally I love the way carbon steels age and patina, especially when paired with micarta scales. I hope to do this with a Maxamet Para 3 someday soon (and get a bronze lanyard tube so I don't have to worry about the crappy stock one). I have yet to see any bugouts in anything other than S30V (barring the prohibitively expensive Gold Class)

You can get the Bugout in 20CV, S90V and M4 sprint runs, and you can get it in all three at any time by ordering custom from their website. Benchmade doesn’t do as many sprint runs as Spyderco though, but sometimes that’s a good thing considering how quickly sprint runs sell out and how short they run, it’s like they make all this cool shit that you can’t have unless you buy on release before it has been reviewed (performance, heat treat, etc.) or pay a premium like the ridiculous $300+ some places were charging for the CRUWEAR sprint runs after week 1 when everyone started praising it.

I have both of these knives, it is difficult to chose one because I love them both. But gun to my head it would be the Para 3 simply because I’ve had a omega spring failure and unless you have had one you don’t understand how much it sucks. So the deciding factor is the dependability of the Para 3.

I love these battles and you are Slicey Dicey are two of my new favorite gear reviewers 👍. I just discovered you guys, recently. I just got my first I own a couple bugouts and I really do love the design. I have one in its regular configuration and one with aluminum after market scales and I really love the scales. They only cost $60. Now the para 3 is the one with the S35 steel and the desert tan scales and satin blade I really love that one as well. I got a Casey Lynch deep carry titanium clip colt , bronze and you’re correct zero hot spots for the most part. I really think I’m keeping both knives. I will say I like the aesthetics of the para 2 a little better than the 3 . I think maybe they could make the para 3 blade a little more streamline, just a little. I do like the para 3 more then I thought I would. Spyderco knock it out of the park on this one. Anyway, great content as usual 👍!

The blue bugout was the first "high end" knife I ever purchased. It was almost the last. I thought, "Wow, I paid how much for this?" It felt so cheap and flimsy. I'm sure it's a good knife but just wasn't for me. For about $15 more I could get a para 3 with g10 and it doesn't feel like a Fisher Price toy. I could have purchased aftermarket scales that might have helped, but spending another $65-80 to outfit a $120 knife is like buying a $2,500 car and putting $1000 rims. Didn't make sense to me when I can get what I want for just a few dollars more.

And the neutral handle ergonomics lend themselves to my large hands better than the more sculpted para 3. I have some rockscale design titanium scales for my bugout, and flytanium titanium scales for my Para 3. I gotta say, the bugout after a scale swap is a perfect EDC knife.

I have to say though that the Spyderco Paramilitary 3 and Paramilitary 2 just feel better in hand and functionally IMO. The spydy hole and the compression lock are just AMAZING. IMO somewhat better than the small thumbnails and Axis lock system Benchmade uses on the Bugout. Either way. IMO you can't go wrong with a Bugout or a Paramilitary. Hey there MC. Don't have a Bugout or a Para 3 but I do have two full sized Griptilians one Mini Griptilian and one Mini Freek and I'd like to share my experiences with omega springs. The mini Griptilian was two days shy of being a month old when both omega springs broke. Weird, I know, but true. Sent it to Benchmade (on my dime) and they fixed the problem and quickly returned the repaired knife to me. Approximately two months later, one of its omegas broke and after notifying Benchmade of the situation, they had me send the knife to them on their dime. They quickly fixed and returned the knife back to me. Now, I'm a retired/disabled 64 year old, old bastard and the hardest use any of my knives see is opening mail and packages (mostly knife packages). I do however fidget with them A LOT on a daily basis but none of my knives are abused in any way unless you consider fidgeting to be abuse. As of today, the omegas on the mini Griptilian are doing fine, (knock on wood) Recently, the mini Freek broke one of its omegas and after sending it in (on my dime) Benchmade repaired and returned it and, so far so good. LOVE the action on my Mini Freek. It is truly drop shutty. Now, after having related my problems with broken omega springs, you'll notice that in both instances, the knives were minis. The two full sized Griptilians (one with the Spydie hole and the other with thumb studs) have wonderful actions and have never given me any problem despite (probably) more than their fair share of fidget time. While speaking with a Benchmade rep on the phone, I asked if there was a difference between the omegas in their full sized versus the minis. She told me that was proprietary info so she simply couldn't say one way or the other. Sorry for writing a novel here but I wanted to share my experience with omega springs which is probably not typical. I'm sure most people will never experience a broken omega but, if they do, Benchmade will quickly rectify the problem. Anyway, keep up the good work MC. Really enjoy watching your videos. Have a good one (or several if possible).

Wow all the hoopla about the Para 3 clip. If you actually use your knife and make aggressive cuts, the standard para 3 clip vanishes in your hand. The deep carry puts a nice hot spot in the back if your palm. Leave the standard clip on and big deal if a little more sticks out if your pocket. Easier to get out.

Bugout is definitely better in pocket, but I am Para 3 (or PM2) all day every day. I had 17 BM knives with Axis locks…940s, Bugouts, and Mini Bugouts; 7 ended up with broken Omega springs and it wasn’t from using one sided activation of the Axis lock….don’t think I’ll ever own another Benchmade Axis lock knife…ever…unless they’d actually send out replacement springs instead of having to ship the knife and wait.

I went to a knife shop today and checked out the Bugout and Bugout mini and they felt way too light and flimsy to me. That is why I prefer the Griptilian. I like the heft and size of it in my hand. Just feels more sturdy and substantial.

My griptilian feels strong but the plastic feels brittle and has a couple hot spots , I like the mini adamas or the grizzley ridge a little better but something about the griptilian keeps it in my rotation

@@metal_complex not real helpful putting oil on a spring that it’s not going to help. Metal doesn’t absorb oil and you pretty much said it did in the video. That’s not accurate. Just junky springs is all you can get of it. There hope that’s accurate and helpful

@@poorboysedcandflashlights5934 it absolutely will keep it from developing corrosion, which could weaken it and cause it to break. I apply it to all of my axis lock style knives, and after multiple years, have never had an issue. So I stand by what I said. Not accurate, and not helpful.

@@metal_complex lol explain my two week old blade HQ Bugout breaking and they was several of those broke. They aren’t going to corrode unless you lay them in water. But I guess you’re entitled to your opinion as I am but oiling an omega spring is DEFINITELY not a part of maintenance 🤷🏼‍♂️

I dont have to explain your knife's failure, nor do I have to place any stock in it. My axis lock knives all work fine, and I've been applying oil to the omega springs. Thats all the information I need to move forward. Sorry yours didn't work. 🤷‍♂️

Sometimes I think that Spyderco is deliberately NOT changing the design and placement of their standard pocket clips so that the aftermarket sales from LynchNW / MXG would continue to fuel the frenzy for more Spyderco knives in the future, kind of like a self-feeding loop.

I own 3 bugouts and a pm2, i dont own a pm3. That being said i absolutely love my bugouts for certain tasks but i love my pm2 for other tasks. I carry a bugout and para 2 every day. Certain places i wont pull the para for fear of looks from normies when that big marlin spike deploys lol. Illuse the bugout for when im in places or around people , where pulling a smaller more " pocket knife" looking blade wont draw too much unwanted attention. When im cutting bigger shit or just in places where people dont give a fuck about a knife being pulled out and used as a tool, ill use the para 2. If i had to pick only 1 i guess id say para 2 cause its a tank and more useful overall. But i do love my bugouts lol

Para3 is a better knife but a worse EDC. It’s more comfortable and has a more practical design when in use, but it’s also clunky and doesn’t sit straight in your pocket and is significantly heavier and more noticeable throughout the day. Benchmade’s s30v is also much better than Spyderco’s and the 20CV Bugout has the best EDC blade I’ve ever used, though the Maxamet Spyderco’s are king in terms of edge retention. Whatever you do, don’t get the s110v Para3, it doesn’t hold an edge anywhere near as long as you would think (20CV is better in my experience) and is an absolute pain to sharpen, even with an edgepro, it just fights you through the entire sharpening process.
