I just received mine the other day from a online authorized dealer sight unseen. She is a Camo beauty with DLC S30V blade. I added a couple of drops of reel oil, flipped the clip from tip down to tip up right hand carry and I'm good to go. The action is so smooth and light, the weight, balance and tactile feel is perfect in my hand. The factory edge is dangerously sharp and needs my full respect at all times. This knife is wonderfully engineered, has a graceful feeling in the hand with a pride of ownership matching beautifully crafted items many times its price. Thanks for this accurate review Rob. Your comments certainly helped seal the deal. I will look forward to getting her finely tuned on your workbench some day.

It took a bit of time, and I would agree -- S30V fights you all the way to a pretty sharp edge. But it's worth it to get it there. S30V is rather legendary for holding an edge and resisting corrosion.

Great question, Mike! My answer would be to use it for a couple of weeks and then see what you've got. If it's still too tight, loosen the pivot as much as you can without side-to-side blade play. If it doesn't drop freely when disengaged at that point, you might need to disassemble and polish internal components. Let me know how this comes out. If you're still not happy with the action, there are some "advanced" things you can do.

It's not an axe. It's not a 7-inch fixed blade. It's a near perfect everyday carry folding knife. It excels in food preparation, opening mail and boxes, cutting cord, and perhaps light, precise wood cutting. It does all the things well that it was designed to do. I'd suggest you get some perspective, my friend, and consider how well a blade performs in its intended use before criticizing it for not being able to do tasks for which it was never intended.

Thanks for the praise, Lawdawg. I'm afraid I don't live up to it all the time though... There are certainly times when I review knives without extended use, especially when I either really like or dislike a knife right off the bat. But I'll also post "review" videos of knives I have in for sharpening, even though I might spend just a few days with them. In these cases, I draw on my experience and familiarity with what makes them tick. But I do try not to speak about things I don't know :)
@drunkinmaster18 жыл бұрын
First I just want to say that I recently got the PM2 and have zero regrets; Absolutely love it. With that out of the way my only gripe is my action does not close as nicely as yours. Opening isn't an issue with my thumb as it flies open like any spring assisted I've had. Myself having a degree in manufacturing technology understands the variances of part tolerances even to the point of aerospace degree, so to myself this is understandable and very reasonable for the price. This can be remedied with polishing the phosphor bronze washers and measuring with calipers. In the end though I fully intend on beating the piss out of this knife. I bought it to be a workhorse with construction, camping and general EDC. My GLOCK 19 proudly wears a worn finish and I hope that this knife builds the same character over years of use.
@Seveneleven4410 жыл бұрын
Great look at the best EDC knife money can buy. I have so many knives I couldn't even tell you a rough figure. Spydies, microtech, benchmade, Chris reeve, kershaw... You get the picture. By far and away, if I had to choose one knife to live and die with it would be my DLC coated PM2. BEST KNIFE MADE for the money.

Thanks for the compliment, brother. I almost didn't do a review on this knife, given the fact that it's been done so many times. I recently came across your channel, thanks for finally helping me make my mind up. I have been looking for an EDC something nice, but that I wouldn't mind using. I have a few Benchmades, I like them but they are over $200 and I just cannot bring myself to carry and use them. I have always liked the look of the Paramilitary 2, but the lock is what really sold me. IMO all Spyderco (well almost all) look the same, just different blade lengthens and locks, but the Paramilitary 2 has always stood out to me. I usually lean towards the black blade finishes, but after owning a few and using them, inevitably the finish gets worn and there is no way to repair it. I went with a Sprint run Brown G10 grips with S35VN (I think) steel, but I only paid $140 for it new so it wasn't much more than one of the SV30 blades. I am in no way a blade snob, I have no idea if the extra $20 was really with it, but I really like the brown grips with the satin blade.
@CampfireTalk11 жыл бұрын

I waited and waited to finally having a burple Para 2 in my hands at the shop thinking I'd try out the S110V steel and see how it fares in this super popular knife that I hadn't gotten yet. I ended up saying that the s30v would be fine in black with the satin finish. Just a standard P2... maybe I can paint the handle and put a golden tassel through the lanyard hole.

Great question! The Native series of Spydies has been quite a journey for Spyderco, hasn't it? The "5" is definitely the best so far -- best blade shape, best mechanism and best steel. However, even with the bushing pivot, which is great, you still have what I think is a pretty weak lock and an action that just isn't as cool to use as the compression lock. The Para 2 is better, stronger and more fun to operate than the Native 5. But as back locks go, the N5 might be the best Spydie ever.

Got it. I'd go with the Sage 1 over the Dragonfly if you can afford it. It's enough bigger that you can do things with it that you can't with the Dragonfly, but not too big to do anything the Dragonfly can do. It's also a much higher quality knife. It's produced in the Taichung Taiwan plant, whose quality rivals the American Spydies. The Seki City Japan plant, where the Dragonfly is made, isn't quite up to that standard. Hope that helps :)

Thanks for watching, brother! Yes, I did get an amazing edge on the old girl :). That S30V gave me a bit of a fight, but when it's finally done, it's amazing! I don't know if you've noticed, but S30V is one of those rare steels that actually seems to get sharper with a little use, especially in paper or cardboard. Also, after a little use, subsequent touch-ups / stroppings seem to make it sharper than the original edge. It's like magic steel! LOL :). Now I need another one too!

When I got mine the pivot needed loosened some to swing freely with minor blade play. I took it apart to clean and lube it and when I put it back together the action was really bad. If I tightened the screw it wouldnt swing freely and if I loosened it it had loads of blade play. I took it apart a third time to install a homemade backspacer and when I reassembled it the action was PERFECT no blade play both screws are tightened all the way. If a particular knife is giving you problems it may just need taken apart and reassembled to "settle" the parts in place.

Well... I love all three, but I would definitely rank them exactly how they're priced, P2, Sage1, then Dragonfly. I do have all 4 knives you mentioned, and if I were in your position, with only a BM 940 in the collection and limited funds, I'd probably go with the Sage 1 next, primarily because P2 supplies are severely down right now and they're hard to score for under $150. I just think they're a bit over-valued right now. But if you can find one in the $125 range, get it :)

I don't need no steenking sprint runs! ;-). Love every Spyderco I own over anything else I've ever owned from Fallkniven, Benchmade, sog, Kershaw, etc. Have considered them them the best bang for the buck folders for many years. Haven't gotten into the "new" generation of Zero Tolerances and such, but honestly don't see any need to. For EDC Spidey is my go to. If I need something tougher, then something from the Busse family of fixed blades will do.

No one sees the beautiful 3 parts blade 4 parts handle ratio. Its BEAUTIFULLY executed. It doesnt have to be 92% of handle blade length when 75% works perfectly. Again if the best handle outside the Manix has a blade thats just long enough, this isnt the tactical MARSOC operators choice its the Airman admins pocket jewelry. Itd kill anyone in a SEALs hands but theyd have another knife. The handle blade with the 50/50 choile is why it flew off the shelves in my humble opinion.

Johnny Mallorf That might help, Johnny. But the Para 2 pivot is designed to be fully tightened. It's a knife that can be tuned, but not easily, and many of them just aren't quite right from the factory. You can certainly try adjusting the screw a bit though.

depends on how hard you plan to use it, assuming you have the S30V version, I would go for a general use 20 degree edge. I have the S110V version which holds the edge longer but is a little more brittle, so I run it at 25 degrees. If you want a super nice cutter with maybe a little less durability (more prone to rolling or chipping) go for 17 degrees or lower.

Brandon Scott No rocket science there, Brandon. You just need to resharpen, paying specific attention to the tip. If the blunted area is about 1/16" or more, it helps to remove material from the spine as well, when you're re-tipping a blade.

In some of your more recent videos your opinion of the PM2 seems to have cooled to a large degree. You said that after 2014 (if my memory serves me right) that the PM2 fit and finish had gone down (again, if memory serves me correctly.) Is there a way you can elaborate on this/why your opinion has changed? I ask because I bought a PM2 in the winter of 2013 and haven't had and issues (with very light use). I want to buy another, but if the Manix 2 S30v is better I want to allocate my limited funds to that instead. Thank you. (Posted from a phone so please excuse an poor grammar/spelling)
@TheApostleP9 жыл бұрын
Steven Rassmussen I wouldn't say my opinion has gone down, but the PM2 does have some unit to unit variability, especially in the pivot, that can be annoying. Some have actions as sweet as can be, and some have side play and won't swing freely. It's a function of a pivot design that requires a lot of dimensional precision, with a manufacturing process that can't repeatably produce it. The Manix 2 suffers with the same pivot, by the way. If you get a good one, it's extremely good, but you don't always get a good one.
@ZechsAznable9 жыл бұрын
TheApostleP Thank you for the timely response. I appreciate your advice on this matter. I'm very much a novice user/collector so I just don't have the technical knowledge. The paramilitary 2 has gotten extremely popular which has made the price go up. Also, a DLC (black) coated blade is going to be more expensive because it is a more expensive coating compared to a satin finish. I grabbed my black on black PM2 for 160.

All models have some variability in this area, and mine came toward the short end of the spectrum. Also, by the time of this video, my P2 was several years old, had been sharpened a few times, and one of those included a bit of a tip repair, so it's probaly lost nearly .080" of its original blade length. All that said, the P2 still has an oddly proportioned blade to handle ratio.

TheApostleP My Camo P2 came last week and was the one I was comparing to yours, and my black one came last night and it has the same length blade as the Camo one. Guess I am luck both of mine are on the long side. I did notice how nicely polished your edge was. Looks great. My black one has a very free flowing blade, whereas the camo is stiffer. I took apart the camo, polished the bronze washers, sanded down the raised edges of the pocket clip holes and then polished them, reassembled and now it is a little smoother. One thing I did notice, my black one was smooth as silk out of the box, then I put the clip where it belongs, tip up, and it changed the smoothness. Seems the screws going through the clip, then G10 and into the liner, pulls the liner nice and straight and away from the blade just enough to effect the smoothness. Thanks again for a nice video and nice reply.

My one criticism of the P2, which probably didn't make it into this video because I hadn't handled as many as I have now, is that the handle construction is a bit imprecise and flimsy, and that affects the blade action a great deal. I've literally spent hours with some examples trying to improve smoothness by deburring, polishing, playing with tightness of screws, etc., and sometimes I'll get it -- sometimes I can't. Even the way you grip and squeeze the handle has a significant effect on how the blade swings on some knives. The P2 is a thoroghbred, but a temperamental one to be sure.

neethu shetty That is truly a sad thing, Neethu. In the US, we can be assured of authenticity by purchasing from reputable online retailers. I'm afraid I'm not much help regarding the Indian market. Sorry, my friend.

The Lightning Guy Odd question. I use most of my 130 or so knives every day - every time I need to cut something. Then I take care of them, maintain them and store them properly. I use can openers to open cans, pry bars to pry, and screw drivers to drive screws.

TheApostleP I thought that was the case, I was just wondering. Huge fan of your channel and have learned a lot from it. Knife sharpening is just a lot of fun once you get good at.
