I have two Native 5 models, a standard LW in s30v, and in g10 with s110v. Even with all the fancy steels, mechanisms, handle materials out there, the Native is still my favorite Spyderco line.

Great video! Great knife! Great way to get a knife! The Spyderco Salt line are amazing! As a Florida Man, who works outside, rain or shine, and who sweats in any condition above 60F, the Salt knives are a must. I started with a H1 Dragonfly in a hawk-bill fully serrated version. This knife is small if I am traveling to a city or state that has stricter knife laws, I'm good. This is a really great knife, owned it for about 3 years, no rust and the steel is easy to touch up with serrated file and sponge strop. The second I got was the Swick 5 in LC200N. This is a more or less defensive serrated Warn-cliff fixed blade that is carried close to your body. I've had firearm holsters hardware and roll pins and iron sights rust very quickly against my skin so the corrosion resistance was pivotal to why I chose this blade. The last Salt knife I purchased was actually not purchased for these knives ability to resist rust. The other great feature of the blades steels in the Salt line are that they are very easy to sharpen. I purchased a Stretch 2 XL in H2 steel so that way I could learn to hand sharpen knives easier. All of these steels do loose an edge fairly quickly, however, that means they are quick to take an edge. This means less strokes on the stone need to be done before seeing results. With this latest Salt knife with a plain non-serrated edge I've been able to learn in a very short amount of time how to hold proper angles and some of the more fine details of sharpening that I couldn't learn on Maxamet or S110V. Now, thanks to these blade steels I am able to sharpen my Maxamet and S110V Manix 2 Lightweights to a razors edge.

I have the delica 4 as my EDC and love it. I bought my father in law the native 5 salt for xmas to use on his boat. I cut bags of fertilizer open every day which has a lot of salt in it. Every other knife I've had has eventually rusted. The delica is doing good so far but I'm considering the native 5 salt for myself also in the future. Pricey bag opener but they look so cool and cut so well.

I have many knives and can't stand to not have one on me at all times, that being said for many years I have not carried a pocket knife while taking the kids to the lake or river as I didn't own a blade that would hold up to constant submersion. I purchased this salt native 5 and carry it while spending time in the water which it has held up great for.

If I were a fisherman or someone living off my knife in hot, humid areas, there's no doubt I would pick Spyderco Salt series knives. Because I don't live off my knife, and spend part of my urban life in the hot, dry environment of Santa Fe, NM, I'm quite satisfied with my Spyderco Persistence, which bears a resemblance to the knife you just talked about. 🗡️🗡️😋

Yes!!! Backpacking in summer I found even VG10 can rust in 3 days. So as much as I like the Delica and Endura they suffer on those trips. The Native 5 Salt is the solution. I have one in my future as well.

I love the rust-proof steels from Spyderco, LC200N and H1 and own quite a few knives in these steels already. LC200N holds edge better than H1, but both are excellent for their purpose.

I have the salt dragonfly 2 (h1 steel), taken it to the beach daily for last 2 weeks fishing. still flawless. Got the s110v steel native 5 option. has not grown on me. want to change scales, but lightweight version no one wants to do it.
@WillEDC5 жыл бұрын
This model is the one. The steel alone makes it worth it. H1 is too soft and the laser etch gets surface rust.

Funny I have had a Victorinox round my kneck on a chain most of my life and I swim/surf with it on and have never had rust issues even if don't shower for a day or three. Much like boyscouts worldwide rust isn't an issue with a good stainless and high polish from a flawless company. Hell most fishing boats from the southern oceans all the way to Alaska have Victorinox deck knives (sometimes exclusively) and they see little to no maintenance just use and a hose down.
@darthblade20165 жыл бұрын
This one is pretty sweet and its only about $20 more than the baseline Native 5 lightweight, so thats pretty cool in my opinion. Cool review and that is definitely the benefit of being a KZbin knife reviewer, lol. Thanks for the review! Im curious if the hardware is as rust-resistant as the blade,but i imagine not.

The Waterway is worth checking out if you like lc200n. Native 5 salt action is the worst out of all my knives. Get a the Spyderco Caribbean. Its heavier but solid, great action, lc200n, leaf shaped blade, etc. Good review but you overlooked the Caribbean and Waterway.

I heard the salts have really crappy edge retention.
@floyd23865 жыл бұрын
The plain edged H1 Salt knives have that reputation, however H1 steel is supposed to work harden and when you get one with serrations, you get very good edge retention, some say it's up there with ZDP-189. This Native however uses a different steel than H1, but I'm not familiar with it's properties.

Only thing I'm really disappointed about Native 5 Salt is the handle color. It's a bit dull and orange tint compare to H1 salt knives (seki city models). It's a nick pick, but still. For the question Native 5 or Delica 4, base model, I prefer Delica 4. Native Salt is an exception though.
@scubainstr5 жыл бұрын
Ferrumium Canis _ had the same view with you. But I’ve seen videos featuring salt 5 in bright yellow FRN cover plates.... wondering if this is the newer models whereas the orange yellow dull yellow you and me saw are the older stock... the post 2019 videos all featured the bright yellow Salt signature yellow FRN. Can someone shed some lights to the dull vs bright yellow FRN handles discrepancies ? Many thanks

I wish Spyderco would make a better dive knife. The best dive knives are always chisel tip blades. With also a gut hook / line cutter. Dive knives are tools, I don’t need a blade in the same manner as the surface. This native 5 salt is my boat knife.
@DamionJR49235 жыл бұрын
I have a dragonfly salt plain edge. I can't say I like it that much. It holds a ok edge. I can always sharpen it that is not a deal breaker. I hate how easily scratched up H1 steal gets. It has been 100% rust proof except for the laser engraving. It rusted a bit. I don't know if it is the dragonfly I don't like or the steel. Maybe the lc200n steel is what I want? It is a little pricey to buy and then not like.
@PoetFisherman5 жыл бұрын
I have the Caribbean and I love it. She hasn't seen hard use yet but the weather here is shaping up so, it's just about time to get the boat and kayak out. I bought mine because I fish a couple of times per week where in the summer it's suffocatingly humid. With fairly limited use so far, the LC200N blade sure seems to hold an edge well. It will take scuffs fairly readily as I found out honing her on Sharpmaker ultra fine rods. It doesn't really bother me all that much as the finish helps hide scratches and this is going to get a lot of wear related use. Granted, I wasn't sharpening from anywhere near dull but it did take a micro bevel rather easily. The Native 5 Salt is going to be my next candidate for f**king up some braided fishing line and for prepping bait. Thanks for the upload. Update: LC200N is now my favorite steel. I have the Native 5 Salt, Caribbean, Siren, Autonomy 2 and now the Waterway coming. I'll be picking up the Pacific Salt 2 as soon as it hits the retailers. Don't miss this steel!

That was a fresh water aquarium in your video, dude, so I could not watch or listen past that point. Freshwater fish, plants, decorations, everything. No salt water there. Take it from a sailor, diver, and REAL salt water aquarium keeper. I have the Native 5 Salt, and it is nice. But the best Salt Knife is the Tusk-by far. It is a work of art-I just wish it had a 3” blade and proportional spike to match.
