For the price, one question: DOES IT CUT WHEN YOU NEED IT TO? If you really need a folding knife with double-row ceramic bearings, stabilised triceratops-horn inlays, iridium handle scales, carbon nano-tube liners and tungsten carbide blade steel, then sell your house and buy one. I'm happy with my cheap and cheerful Tenacious though. Keeps a decent edge for each session of use, it's easy to sharpen and I won't weep into my porridge if I lose it. I'll just buy another one.

Definitely agree is it perfect?no, does it do what I need it to ?yes. Do I have to maintain the edge?yes. It’s a knife from an American company but not made manufactured in America. I’m good with that have several and have lost a few carry one daily.

Exactly. This shit of people prattling on about spec sheets on KZbin and acting like they’re some professional is getting ridiculous at best and asinine at worst. Why can’t I just find a video about a product that just explains what the thing is and how well it does what it’s designed to do. It’s always some bearded pretentious trust fund millennial who just likes to hear his own voice.

This was my fist Spyderco, I think like you said lots of times is the step into Spyderco when you are just starting and don’t want to or can’t afford the better Spyderco’s. It was the beginning of the knife addiction for me. I loved it at the time , but as the addiction takes over you step up to other Spyderco’s. Also when I started this there was not the choices in knives that we have now. I think you hit the nail on the head with the pretty good review of this knife!!

I’ve recently become interested in an edc knife and just came across this year old video. I really like the Spyderco knives and especially the Spydee (sp) hole. I have looked at a bunch and am drawn to the combo blade, but don’t know if it’s necessary for an edc. I know the serrations have their functions, but I’m wondering if it’s something I need in a first carry knife.

I actually like the (bottom of the barrel steels) really just softer tighter grained lower alloyed steels like 8cr, 440c, 1075-1095 lots of other carbon steels, aus 8, bucks 420hc i suppose, 12c27 or 14c28n ect. They get very sharp very easily and just seem more readily serviceable. All steels dull and I'd rather not need a special stone/hone or paste and more time to touch them up let alone reprofile them or actually adjust an angle.

I know the Tenacious is kind of a bastard child amongst the Spyderco knives. But I have a soft spot for it. True, fit, finish, materials and looks are inferior to its siblings, but one place it shines is that because it ain’t a grail knife, you will never shy off any rough task with it. Its a working-class hero knife. It will take a beating and will not hurt your feelings later when you find that you’ve damaged its finish. Its a reliable tool that won’t let you down if you ignore the fact that you won’t ever gonna take pride in the fact that you own it.

The tenacious is a knife that has been "Grandfathered" so many people have had this knife that they still get recommended to newcomers. It's similar to the CRKT M-16 or the Benchmade Griptilian or Spyderco Delica. So many people have had them that it's easy for someone to say that it was their first "good" knife and then recommend it to someone else.

The Spyderco Tenacious is a very solid EDC choice. The only problem is that it has gone up in price over the years. It was about 37 bucks, and it was great then. It's still good now, but it's over 50 bucks, but we're getting into another price zone. That being said, the Spyderco Tencious is still a very solid knife. I've got some of the so-called "great" knives from China in the 50 bucks range, and I still prefer my Tenacious. So, I disagree with you there.

Gotta disagree w this review I own 17 Spyderco's and this knife always seems to find it's way back to my pocket, got to be honest I do pretty much stick with the s35vn version I have , but for someone who does mechanic and oilfield work it's pretty close to a perfect knife that you can abuse , resharpen really easy , try to cut through anything without being worried about damaging your blade which is definitely a factor ,I feel alot more comfortable doing heavy duty task w a sub 100 dollar knife compared to sub 200 para and manix series . Tenacious is for sure my go to for hard use because for 1 it's never let me down in atleast going on 5 yrs now and if for some reason the blade was to break or chip 50 bucks and your back in business . I also own alot of sub 100 dollar knifes (civivi, cold steel, crkt,Kershaw, Gerber, boker...) And u maybe be able to find better steel , better overall looks , but ease of use (one hand open and close), comfort in hand and performance in the field I would put it up against any of them any day of the wk and twice on Sunday

3 years later, I would still buy a Tenacious if I won't have one. Great buy ! Of course, you can have better quality with 3 times more money, but what's the point ? And you can't compare it to a Para 3, which as a shorter blade and a really shorter cutting edge ? Having a budget EDC folding doing so great the same job than expensive ones is a big pro to my mind, because if I loose it or damage the blade, it won't be a drama. So I can wear it every time, everywhere and use it for every task, which I wouldn't with precious knife. And there's still no budget knife i can compare with.

In my opinion, it’s worth supporting an American company even if this particular model is made in China. I also think that Spyderco’s steel is far more reliable than anything D2 in China. Sal Glesser has publicized a number of times that they tried Chinese D2 and it was either not D2 or poorly made. Though he’s convinced the maker to work with steels like s90v now (excited to see where that leads). Spyderco’s designs are also just my preference generally because they align with what I like more so than most other manufacturers. Their Byrd brand is full of some of the most useful designs out there. They are cheap and the worst thing you could deal with is an off center blade or something really minor like that. My experience with people who aren’t “into knives”, but also use one regularly, shows that design and price are the most important considerations.

It obviously is not the best knife in the price class. If you want to try Spyderco and you hate the way they look yes a PM3 or PM2 are better but if you aren't willing to spend that much to see if you might like Spyderco then it may make sense. Yes to someone buying 150 and up knives and either Civivi or CJRB on budget end then no.
