Appreciate the help. Just bought a Spyderco for my sister's birthday and this was the first thing I checked when it arrived. All signs point to it being legit assuming they haven't gotten better at creating frauds.

If you buy from any kind of reputable store or website, there's not much to worry about. Avoiding the secondary market is the key.

About a year ago maybe more I noticed several sellers on dh gate with tenacious models. I knew one day those clones would eventually make their way around. I'm actually surprised it took this long to come to everyones attention. They had a ton of paramilitary 2s for sale for like 30 bucks and some even stated up front they were clones. Anyone who bought clones intentionally to resell for their own personal profit truly are the scum of the earth.

Yeah, and that's the real problem with it. Just having knives like that around almost encourages people to take advantage of others.

Neat and sucks at the same time. Personally I'm fine with clones as long as they have their own manufacturer's mark on them, but straight up counterfeit copies are no bueno : /

The Counterfeit stuff certainly bugs me. If you're capable of making a good knife, the way this one seems to be, make your own, and take credit for it.

I’m a watch guy getting into knives. I’m not surprised at knock offs of budget items: there’s fake Casio f91w watches, which is less than 10 bucks new (original, that is).

If you have to buy a counterfeit tenacious you have a-lot more problems then you think. The real one’s are like $50 max and that typically includes shipping. How much would you really be saving by knowingly buying a counterfeit off of wish or something?

The fake probably has better steel than the real one tbh. Ganzo has spyderco lookalikes for less than 25 bucks. One even has an axis lock, with 440C steel, better than 8cr13mov any day imo.

I’m certain I just ordered a fake for $30. I didn’t notice it was shipped from China. I just looked for feedback. I ordered a real one at $60. The Dragonfly 2. I tried cancellation but we will see. The feedback will be harsh if it’s fake.

Interesting! I noticed the standoff screw on the legit one is in line with the spider logo on the clip but in the fake, the standoff is lower. I think the spider is higher on the fake clip too. The clones seem to miss the subtle things (like the font and jimping). Pity that the newbies are most likely to be fooled.

I’ve seen clones of many of the Chinese made Kershaw a as well. I’m all positive I’ve run into some actual Kershaw as that we’re just never brought to the states and sold straight from China

Simple, if you printed five hundred counterfeit $100 bills, you wouldn't use many of them because people would test each one before taking it, but if you printed 2,500 counterfeit $20 bills, you'd have an easier time spending them because people wouldn't think to look at them too hard. Basically, cheaper knives are less likely to be examined than expensive ones, and any differences you might see, could arguably be chalked up to poor quality control in the Chinese shop.

Yep, just because of the screws. Maybe the font could be debated, but no reputable manufacturer has ever used that shape screws on a knife that I've seen.

Interesting. I would not have suspected clones being made of a Spyderco Tenacious? One of my favorite knives is a "Green Thorn" clone of a Shirogorov F95. It is super well-made and was not "cheap" for me to purchase.. I knew that I was buying a very well-made Chinese clone and was really impressed. I liked it so much I had a custom scale made for it!. LOL! Green Thorn is a known quality manufacturer that, I believe makes its own designs, too. The knife world is a crazy place! 😬

Unfortunately just about any knife they can make money on will be cloned. It is sad. On the super high end customs see it more but the people know they are buying a clone when a knife sells for 700 and you can buy it for 200 it's a clone. But also probably the only way you would ever get that in your hand. It is strange some of the things I have heard clones. There are clones of Byrds. As they say buyer beware. It would really be hard to spot in a group of other knives.

I'm not 100% convinced it is fake. As you just did, screws can be swapped. I've also seen changes in the font, specifically I have 2 Native 5's from Golden and the lettering is subtly different. I'd recommend comparing the liners. Even the best PM2 clones I've seen, the liners do not match up. One that I spotted that I never would have thought to be cloned was the Benchmade red box Vex. I still have the clone and its every bit as nice as the real one. The only detectable difference I've found was the country of manufacture.

There are some other notable things that indicate it's a fake, specifically the logo being not quite right. I really doubt the screws would be changed like that too, but hey, anything is possible.

Yeah I get it. It's a different story when something USA made is outright copied, manufactured and sold by China with low quality and sold as real, but when companies outsource to China mfg, they probably have seconds/blems or just slightly lower quality/different material/hardware of the exact product coming from the same factory at a lower price. Full disclosure would be cool but such is life when you go overseas, I'm always skeptical either way. For this particular instance spyderco has no real involvement in assembling or manufacturing the product. All they did was hand over a design and materials list to someone who said they can make it for X dollars. Does it really matter at that point if one is "real" or one that was made 10feet away by the same worker but sold by a different dist for less.
