I could listen to this guy talk all night long, what a smooth voice. Also his knives are quite the opposite! Sharp and awesome. Keep it up Sal!

Having declared my dissatisfaction with this sharpener last night kzbin.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ I thought about the problem some more. It occurred to me that I might be undoing each attempt at achieving a sharp edge by the repeated attempts. So, I tried to clean up the unsatisfactory result by honing with only positions 3 and 4.Miracle!! A really nicely sharpened chef's knife, more than enough to handle my needs. Admittedly, it did not reach professionally sharpened razor-fineness, but it is now significantly sharper than it was. A bout of breaking down carrots convinced me. So, major apologies to the manufacturer, Amazon, and all happy and potential owners! Follow the directions: don't buy it if you have ceramic blades; and don't overwork your knife blade.

Man, this video is clearly well older than when it was posted to youtube, but there's just no reason to re-record it. It still does its job perfectly.

alright, i finally understand what you're asking. The reason he takes it from the vertical to the almost completely horizontal is for many reasons. 1) it was innovative to the sharpener 2) think of the way scissors are angled, this angle is not measured like the blade of a knife, it is measured from the horizontal or the flat ground. Think of this way, if you open your scissors, and place one blade vertically on the table, the angle from the apex to end of the edge is about 12.5 degrees

Personally I find the Lansky system is better to SHARPEN blades, but once there is a viable angle the Spyderco is superb at maintaining it. That said, I bought the 'diamond' encrusted hones and found they set an angle really well, which would support what's being said on the video. I also bought the superfine hones too and they bring the honed edge to a neat polish. I've had mine now for nearly 20 years and thoroughly recommend this unit.

I made my own sharpmaker type device. It holds a 1/4'' round stone at roughly 20* angle on both sides. This video is teaching me how to use my homemade sharpener...

Can you show us how you did it?

I bought a Sharpmaker probably around 20 years ago (the version before the one being demo'd in the video). It puts an amazing edge on my old Buck folding Hunter (as well as on my Kershaw and Rigid folders and my Leatherman). I've been having a lot of trouble trying to use the Sharpmaker it to sharpen my Emerson tanto folder (it has a chisel, partially serrated, blade). This video gave me some good ideas on how to do that, thanks!

The magic of this sharpener is the fact that each stroke is just a little different angle so what you end up with is a micro convex blade and convex is the longest lasting edge.

alright, well if you think about it, scissors rely on both "blades" to get a good cut. Which is then technically 25 degrees inclusive you could say. Chips alsoput a huge damper in this ability. The reason however for it not being 77.5 would be the thing you had to draw, or go back in the video and study it quick. They go from vertical to horizontal because just like the chisel grind, you have to deburr the blade.

Sal (and the instructions) say the scissors stone set is 12.5 degrees, but it is actually 90-12.5 = 77.5 degrees, isn't it? For some reason they switch from talking about degrees from the vertical to degrees from the horizontal, which is confusing.

Man, this guy Sal really seems to know his stuff. Very impressive. Very imformative. Too bad the video production quality is a bit low rent.

Thanks for trying to help me understand this but I am too much of a mechanical idiot to do so, I'm afraid. Also, I'm not sure what you mean in that comment about chips. But, I'll stand with my original statement, that the stones angles are given in degrees from the vertical, normally, but when he moves the stones to the end holes, he suddenly starts referring to degrees from the horizontal. Just watch, the stones are almost in a horizontal position compared to before.

I'm not sure what you would want me to draw, but in speaking of knife angles, the lower the angle, the sharper the edge of the blade. In looking at my scissors, the angle is very "dull", so I don't see how 12.5 degrees makes any sense.

Just because it was made in 2002, does not make a lame video production OK. 2002 was not exactly the dark ages. The production quality was just as poor then as it is today. Sal deserves much better.
