This is a close up look at the exclusive Heinnie Haynes edition of the Spyderco UKPK folding pocket knife. The pocket knife is one of the most used everyday carry (or EDC) items and this version of the Spyderco UKPK is arguably the best UK legal pocket knife you can own.
My name is Jonathan, I have a passion for all things 'gadget, travel and EDC' which has filled both my personal and work life for many years. This includes sourcing, reviewing and product development and the creation of two UK national retail chains. Find out more here: • About Jon Gadget - Who...
This channel is here to help you find great travel and carry gear on the back of solid and detailed reviews along with years of experience. I also hope to give you ideas and inspiration when it comes to everyday carry gear, travel gear and gadgets, which make life a little bit easier and perhaps more fun.
I welcome any feedback on my videos or the channel in general. Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Product Sourcing:
When it comes to sourcing a product for review, I will usually either purchase an item personally or reach out to a supplier requesting a sample for review. Most suppliers, after seeing the channel, are supportive if they are confident in their product, appreciating the value of greater exposure.
I am sometimes asked to review a product by a supplier which I will only agree to if the product fits the channel and I believe will be of interest to you, my audience. Also the product needs to be worthy of a review. It is not in my interest to review inferior or poor quality products and therefore as you might expect many requests are politely declined.
Any sponsored videos (paid for reviews) are clearly stated as such so there can be no misunderstanding. Even with sponsored reviews I will only agree to a sponsorship on products and services which I believe will be of genuine interest to viewers.
I will always make reference in the video to products which have been provided for review by a supplier and I always make it clear to the supplier that they cannot influence or be involved in the review in any way if they choose to supply a product.
Sometimes a supplier will provide a link to the product or the supplier which I am happy to include in the description. Sometimes I will be provided with an affiliate link so I can earn a commission on sales and this helps to support channel costs but never at the expense of an honest review.
If a product I have reviewed is available from Amazon I will often include an Amazon link in the description. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. If you purchase a product or service with the links that I provide I may receive a small commission. There is no additional charge to you.
Thank you for supporting the channel so I can continue to provide you with regular reviews, thoughts and ideas and (hopefully) inspiration! Please consider subscribing to keep up to date with new video releases.

The UKPK was designed in collaboration with the members of a now defunct UK knife forum called BritishBlades of which Sal was a member. I still have my design team edition which has 'UK Pen Knife design team' engraved along the back spring.

While I understand hesitancy to carry certain knives; if it's legal we should. Seeing people use a folder for regular tasks normalizes knife carry. It sends a message that an EDC knife is a tool not a weapon. I was carrying a Spyderco Delica here in the US until I lost it. I plan on getting another one because it's such a great tool.

Really enjoyed the video. I own thirty Spyderco knives, bought over the years before they really went up in price. Most have to stay home as they have locking blades, however I do have some of the slip joint variants. While I like them, they feel like a diluted version of the real thing and the tactical look could arouse suspicion. For UK EDC I will always go for a mid size SAK, I am more confident of the blade retention during use and they are much cheaper. Footnote:- Before the laws were changed I used to EDC a Spyderco Delica.

Great video Jon. I do have a soft spot for Spyderco and have a few all bought before the knife laws tightened. They are housebound only but I like to fidget with them and just like the tactile nature of them and the engineering and aesthetic. The knife laws are a bit stupid to me as a lot of knife crime is comitted with large kitchen knives or machete type blades. Just shows we can't have nice things.

Evoste you are absolutely right, most knife crimes are committed with kitchen knives. Not only that, someone who is of the type to stab another human being is not going to be deterred from carrying a knife just because of a law. It will only stop (read disarm) the law abiding citizens.

I had the standard UKPK and thought that was good until I bought this Heinnie Haynes edition of the Spyderco UKPK. This one is just so much better. Full back spacer and 4 screws unlike the standard 3 screw UKPK. The one I had locks so tightly it's amazing. With the better steel there is just no reason to buy the standard one here in the UK. Great review. My first "big boy knife" is a endura clipit in 1988. My current edc is an ukpk in bdn1 plus a victorinox camper with fireant tec clip and olight i1r eos. Even when I own over 100 knives and multitools. Ukpk has no metal liners to rust, is easy to sharpen, open back for easy cleanup. Although I own a couple of the smaller, UK legal, Spyderco knives, I’ve never been a huge fan - I can’t decide whether I like the leaf shaped blade and they always seem a little over priced. An alternative you might want to consider, at half the price, is the Boker Plus XS drop point. It is non-locking, has an easy one-hand opening action with a thumb stud, a finger choil giving extra protection and is available in a Hennie Haynes special addition

UKPK also has a salt version with LC200N. The steel is tougher than S30V, carries a very good edge (probably 2/3 the edge retention of s30v), very easy to sharpen, and completely rust-proof. It's probably the best EDC steel option until a version with MagnaCut comes along.

I think it’s terribly sad how many people now see carrying a pocket knife as suspicious, strange or scary. It wasn’t long ago at all that it was so common place, no one thought twice. Even schoolboys would carry penknives! This is the kind of tragic situation that comes from the news holding a magnifying glass over crimes involving knives, which conditions people to respond with fear to the most common tool throughout human history. The stupidest thing of all is that those who are already willing to use a knife for criminal purposes are hardly going to care about a lesser law about not carrying certain knives 🙄. So in reality it’s the ordinary, non-criminal people like you and I that are punished by these irrational ‘laws’.

@@JonGadget in the USA there is such a messy patchwork of laws. Each county, municipality, us state can have their own laws, so you will never know what is legal and what not in one place or another. Also you can get arrested and handcuffed if you are drinking a beer in a park or on a bench in a public street and you have no ID card on you. Moreover sentences are crazy long. A school teacher, Brittany Zamora, got sentenced to 20 years in prison for having sex with an underage male student. In most EU states people don’t get 20 years for homicide. @@JonGadget Laws in the USA are a patchwork of bureaucracy. So called "gravity knives" have been illegal in New York State for years, then since they are useful to some workers, they were made legal. But they are still illegal in New York City (where I live). A woman from Texas or some other state was visiting the 9-11 memorial in NYC and going through security she declared the gun she was carrying. It is illegal in NYC to carry/transport guns and she was arrested. It means that in the USA what is legal ins one town is illegal a few miles away. It is a bit ridiculous. I read somewhere that the law wasn't initially meant to criminalise lock knives, only fixed blades and "offensive weapons" (switchblades, balisongs, non-ornamental swords, every niche weapon ever used in a ninja movie etc.) but a judge ruled in a court case that a lock knife doesn't count as a folding knife and here we are. I'm not a police officer and I've never been in a street gang so I don't know personally but I'd imagine the vast majority of stabbings are done with cheap kitchen knives and garden tools and maybe the odd cheap imported lockknife or switchblade here and there maybe. I'd be very surprised if anyone's ever killed someone with a Leatherman Wave or a Benchmade 940 in this country.

yes - just to echo the other feedback - I believe fixed blades were made illegal to carry and a barrister argued that a locking knife is the same thing 🙁

I've got one and think it's great knife and it's probably the best UK EDC per your criteria. Buuuuuut ... naturally, it depends on your day. If you're making a few rolls or cleaning up some wild mushrooms or stuff from your allotment, a lock, Spidey hole or thumb stud just collect gunk. Something like a Manly Wasp or the current HH G-Slip limited edition have decent scales and steel are better suited IMPO HH

Real Steel do make some excellent modern slipjoints. I've got the titanium and N690 Luna and for a dedicated pocket knife, especially with a thumbstud, you can't really do better for the price. If I didn't already have the Luna I'd probably get the G-Slip compact

I have this one, and also the S110v version, in my opinion, the S110v knife is much better, ! It is a lot lighter, and the action feels very superior, to this Heinnie version,.. The S110v knife is the one I grab, most days, and the S30v knife stays in the drawer,,. If anyone is thinking of buying this, I'd say, pay a bit more, and get the S110v version,, it's not difficult to sharpen imho, and holds a very sharp edge, for a really long time..

I find it quite bizzare that a safety feature such as a locking blade is not legal to carry. Again, such a knife can be carried if one can prove " good reason ". Who decides what constitutes good reason ? Anyway I always carry my Skeletool in my bag for emergencies. If it is confiscated I"ll just buy another one.

Well technically Locking Knives are Legal to carry in the UK, you just need a reason to have if on your person.

I would not feel comfortable carrying that in the UK. Regardless of its legality, it looks like it’s purpose is nothing other than an offensive weapon.
