I bought a whole bunch of stuff from this guy at a woodworkers show 23 years ago. He is really interesting . I talked to him for a long time. It is great to see him still teaching. Congratulations Sal, on your great success. You certainly paid your dues.

I worked a booth at a county fair in 1984ish. A Spyderco rep had a booth across the aisle. I was already familiar with the Spyder "helping hands" device, my brother had one he used for holding components to be soldered or brazed. I got to see and hear the Tri-Angle Sharpmaker demo and sales pitch all weekend long...enough so if needed, I could demo and sell them too. Needless to say, I was sold on it. I bought one from the rep, we actually bartered ~ some excellent organic produce in exchange for a Sharpmaker. That first Sharpmaker was used for years, then tragically (for me) it was stolen along wirh most of the tools I was using to earn my living. Not surprisingly a new Sharpmaker was among the first items I bought when I slowly replaced my expensive tools. Any thief that steals another man's tools, especially his Sharpmaker, should be dealt with in the same manner as 19th century horse thieves. To the point - A certain skill has to be developed to effectively use the Sharpmaker. Since it has no jig or guide for the blade, the operator must develop the good eye hand coordination needed to attain a superior edge. Thanks Sal!

Love this sharpener and some of Spyderco knives. But what is most impressive is Sal's entrancingly hypnotic voice. Amen.

I’m a freehand guy through and through…but hearing Sal talk about this stuff is worth the “price of admission” here, all day.

Great upload! Use the sharpmaker for my kitchen knives all the time... but these videos reminded me how much more it is useful for.

What is the best way to sharpen a blade that is somewhat recurved? Should I use just the edges of both sets?

I have one and it works great! Question, how would I sharpen a convex edge? In particular I have a Falkniven F1 knife
@techtrain65
@techtrain65 8 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that convex edges should be stropped to keep them sharp.

@newcoyote To clarify, he said "most people think, a knife is just a knife" Which I would tend to agree regardless of presentation.

I got one from Amazon and i don't know if it's a knockoff or a factory defect but it broke on the first use and i hate it so much. I can only get a good edge if I freehand with the rod, which is really dangerous.

Throughout this entire presentation, every time Sal makes a generalization about women, the female co-host (Marni?) interjects a small correction. It makes me snicker every time. Go get'em girl. In the next video after this one he says "most women are wearing nail polish" and she answers "Not this one, haha." An American craftsman-businessman paragon of the old world living on the cusp of that world transitioning to the new one, trying to be a good person while the definition (or our image) of that changes under his feet. I hope people don't think this means Sal Glesser is a sexist or a bad person... He seems like a good guy. Polite, gentle, hardworking... Our image of a gentleman morphs over time, but that doesn't make Sal Glesser any less of gentleman! ...Okay! Back to sharpening and watching these videos. I came here to find out how to remove the burr once I'm done sharpening.

What i missed what a statement like, "a stone is the best tool to sharpen overall, but unless you have to do it on a daily basis, its just too difficult to handle." since i am pretty certain Mr. Glesser does use a stone when he is sharpening.

@rtruong I think you missed my point. What I said was a roundabout way of expressing how much I like Spyderco and hearing them referred to as "just" makes me want to scream. For example, I own as many Militaries(Spydie model) as most people own forks in their kitchen alone. I'm not alone. There are many of us knife knuts, I also imply this is all a little tongue-in-cheek. I know what he meant.

I just about gagged when the guy said "A knife is just a knife." Especially with that glorious Spyderco banner behind him. I know, I know. It's part of a presentation and not meant to be taken seriously. Just funny.

I learned to keep the blade vertical by placing a mirror behind the sharpener so I could visually check my angle. It helped a lot.

bestill den fra USA, så har du spart de penga. Kan anbefale knifecenter, de er ikke billigst, men de har frakt med fed.ex. som er billigere en USPS, raskere en USPS og leverer rett på døra i hovedstaden.
