If you pay close attention and know a decent amount of early-2000's trivia, you might notice that the ice ballerina you have to defend from hockey thugs is named after Nancy Kerrigan, the figure skater who famously got attacked by goons after a practice session because Tonya Harding wanted the olympic figure skating medal for herself. Pretty nifty, ain't it? By the way, Nancy ended up scoring 2nd place while Tonya only managed to get 8th and then got banned from the sport as a result of the goon attack.

I didn't, I never got to play through Spyro 1 All we had when I was a kiddo (early 2000's in Croatia, like preschool days) all I remember was some guy selling bootleg and pirated copies in some store. Most of my Spyro versions were corrupted- In Year of the Dragon the fairy would literally say "this game is not original, it won't work" and after Evening Lake the game would break and it would just start over every time. Didn't even realize I was being cheated lol. Never beat a Speero game in my life, hoping to get a PS4 by November to play all 3 of em.

8:01 “Spyro sets an example Sonic Adventure would follow in the future.” Sonic Adventure came out in 1998 & 1999 Spyro: Year of the Dragon came out in 2000. Spyro was following the trend of multiple playable characters here, especially since it also came out after Donkey Kong 64

Please, the quality difference isn't close. To be honest, I think DK 64 absolutely sucked and while I liked Sonic Adventure, it has aged absolutely horribly and I think it's only nostalgia that keeps it so high in a lot of people's minds. Year of the Dragon on the other thand is a masterfully crafted game. I would easily put it in the top five platformers I've ever played with only Jak and Daxter and Super Mario Galaxy as competition for the top spot.

Spyro 2 and Spyro 3 definitely run a tight race, however Year of the Dragon's worlds just seem more immersive. There are more levels in general, so it just makes the world as a whole feel bigger and like a larger adventure awaits you. I remember the very first time I played it as an 8 year old back in 2001. It's like I instinctly knew that it was a masterpiece and that I was in for a ride. Besides the feel of a bigger adventure, the skateboarding and the story bring me in to 3 over 2. The little twist of fate with Bianca coming over to Spyro's side was cute and added an unexpected twist to the story. The story even hints and builds on this early on with Hunter being attracted to her and later saving her in Midday Gardens. The game is ALMOST perfect, besides the points you pretty much covered in the video. I also have the original version and I've never had a chance to play the Greatest Hits version. Also Spyro 3's rating on IGN actually indicates it's the best performing Spyro game of the trilogy with a 90% rating. Spryo 2 is somewhere around 85-87%. It's been a long time since I've looked up those statistics, but I do remember that much.

That's because the initial US release was unfinished due to Insomniac having to rush the game out the door to coincide with the real-life Year of the Dragon. Since the PAL version came out later, it had numerous bugfixes (like the Spike cutscene actually playing) and music changes. This improved version would later be re-released in the US as the Greatest Hits edition (as it was common in the day to patch major bugs in later printings of games), but the one most commonly available, including on the PS3 store, is the original, buggy, unfinished release.

I can’t say which of the trilogy is the absolute best, because somehow I never played Ripto’s Rage as a kid. It’s weird, we got the original Spyro the Dragon when it came out, Year of the Dragon when it came out, and even got both Enter the Dragonfly & A Hero’s Tail when they came out...but somehow not Ripto’s Rage. Slipped through the cracks I guess. It is strange that happened to be honest, as my sister and I loved Spyro and Crash but especially Spyro. So having missed Spyro 2, I can’t cast judgment. However, of all the Spyro games I *have* played, Year of the Dragon was my favourite. I love how innovative and expanded it was compared to the OG, and loved how much new shit they threw in. And I *love* how absolutely 2000 it is. A lot of the content and writing style exemplifies that strange transitionary period from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, and from the 20th century to the 21st. The addition of TOTALLY RADICAL skateboarding segments exemplifies what I mean lololol. The thing is though...I haven’t played this in over like 15 years. So seeing you play through this game has...filled me with such an UNIMAGINABLE amount of nostalgia! Like it’s actually caught me off guard. I’m suddenly remembering being back in the first house we lived in upon moving from Toronto, Canada to Southern California. Playing this game while sitting in front of the old classic glass screen TV in our living room that didn’t even have A/V jacks because it was made in 1989, forcing us to use an adapter until my parents finally decided my sister was old enough to get her own TV in her own room and bought her a more modern glass screen TV from 2004 that actually had the appropriate Red/White/Yellow A/V jacks. Sitting there with my sister explaining how playing a video game works. Remembering the early days when I still had to keep looking at the controller when I wanted to do stuff, and the day I realized that I had finally gotten the hang of video games because I no longer needed to do that, I knew where all the buttons were naturally and thus could keep both eyes on the screen at all times. Remembering playing the shit out of the skateboarding segment cuz it was the year 2000 and I was a 5/6 year old boy with a tomboy sister who was 9/10 years old and therefore loved any and everything EXTREME and RADICAL! Even the cutscenes...my god its amazing how the ENTIRE game and even the feeling I got while playing it is rushing back to me. And thinking of those days and that console has me remembering playing Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro and flipping through the BradyGames official strategy guide and always putting in the cheat code “AUNTMAY” in order to unlock EVERYTHING. All costumes and costume abilities (including invincibility and unlimited web fluid), and sometimes “WHATIF” to unlock What If? mode, which made all kinds of wacky changes. (There was one level where in What If? mode, you could find a giant floating banana and ride it all the way to the end of the level.) Ah and that game was even more special than all the others because it, in conjunction with the 90s Spider-Man animated series, triggered the beginning of my intense love for comic books and superheroes - specifically Spider-Man who is my all time favourite single superhero. (He’s tied with X-Men for all time favourite comics tho. If we’re talking individual character, I like Spidey more than any one X-Man. But counting the X-Men collectively, they’re firmly tied with Spidey.) I can’t tell you how much that influenced my life and my interests. So much of me started there, in front of a glass screen with PS1 controller in hand. It’s got me sad tho. Cuz the reason all these memories are so faded and have been put away in a box in the attic of my mind, only able to be brought forth by a video like this is because in like 2003 or 2005, our PS1 somehow disappeared. Lost in a move or stuffed in a box and put away in the rafters of our garage somewhere and totally forgotten about. And then all our PS1 games got sold. Except - thank fuck - for Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, because those two games were some of the most important games in my life. Part of a collection of classic PS1 games that make up the first video games I ever REALLY played in my life. Technically Banjo Kazooie on N64 was the first video game I ever played but I was 2&3 years old when I did and didn’t really grasp what I was doing. It wasn’t until a couple years later when we got our PlayStation that my sister truly introduced me to games. Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped, Spyro the Dragon & Year of the Dragon, Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 & 3, and Star Wars Episode I: Jedi Power Battles & the actual Episode I video game adaptation. These were the games that introduced me to video games fully and literally changed my life forever. And then 2002 hit and we got our PlayStation 2 and I became a full-on GAMER. The PS2 was where things REALLY took off. PS1 and those games were my introduction to gaming and my training ground. But PS2 was where my childhood lived. Because not long after getting it my sister kinda outgrew video games so it became the first console that was MINE! All MINE. And I was 8 years old when I got the thing, and it was my only games console until finally getting a PS3 in about 2010 at age 16. 8 to 16 years old, man. That’s some of the most formative childhood years. So needless to say my memories of that console and it’s lineup overshadowed the PS1 and it’s lineup, once our PS1 vanished and all but 2 games lost. However, since the PS2 mercifully could still play PS1 games, I was able to still enjoy THPS2 and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro. And while THPS2 got lost itself in around 2010 or 2012, I still have and enjoy the shit outta Enter Electro to this DAY, thanks to my PS3 and PS2 (though recently I fear my PS2 may have broken and I’m kinda freaking out about it cuz I’ve had it since 2005 when my parents got ME the new slim version for my 11th birthday cuz the original fatty PS2 that they got me and my sister for Christmas 2002 had busted and started EATING game discs. As in, pop in a disc and the console makes a bunch of scary noises and refuses to play the game, so you turn it off and when the console spits the disc out, you see that it’s been scratched up to about HELL and back). Anyway holy shit enough rambling. Sheesh. As you can tell, me seeing this footage of Year of the Dragon triggered an absolute nostalgia OVERDOSE and set me off on a WAY to bloated and rambling tangent. But still, it was good to reminisce while tapping out this nonsense nobody in their right mind would ever possibly read, and it was good to get this rambling nostalgia bomb out of my system. /rant

I liked 3 more than 2 because they fixed some of the problems I have with it. Like when u have to kill enemies to get an power up. Or having to do alot of backtracking in which; while optional, is just an little overboard with the level designs & requirement moves or whatever. And the missions in 3 are pretty fairly challenging and not as much difficult spikes or annoyance as 2 ( with the exception of 2 or 3 ones like Bently Boxing & Shellias mission in the haunted Swamp level ).

There's definitely things to like, and things to hate. I kinda liked it, but with the first two games I thought that there were too many waves of enemies at every turn (I honestly would have had more fun if they cut the number in half), and I detested quite literally everything about Sparx. The low amount of animations, the model, the facial expression, the voice acting(At least the first game), and the writing. The third game I played and found it quite possibly the most "I love this"/"I hate this" game I've ever played, with how they took control of the camera from you. I loved the game when you had full control of the camera. I detested the game when you didn't.

My biggest issue with the Legend of Spyro games was just how much they railroad you. One of my favourite parts of the original trilogy was being able to fully explore each of the worlds - climbing and gliding around to see what little nooks and crannies I could gain access to. With the legend series, you're on a path and surrounded by plants and other obstacles that force you to stay on it. There's little to no replayability, because it'd be the exact same experience every time. It's a good story, but eh.

Fun fact: A glitch with the dynamic difficulty system makes the blue-footed booby race in Harbor Speedway and the snowboard race in Super Bonus Round literally impossible on the highest difficulty. @alessandrobozzi70856 жыл бұрын
You honestly couldn't put it any better than with that genius title: the trilogy just kind of... _ends_ with this game, what with a rather underwhelming secret ending (belch-only dialogue, anyone?), a somber track for Midnight Mountain, and who could ever forget that gut-wrenching "Thank you for playing. We'll miss you." in the Atlas' epilogue? That's what makes the second one that much better in my opinion, variety notwithstanding.

This was my favorite of the trilogy. I liked new characters and the extra challenges better than the second game. Also the first game while more nostalgic than the others isn't as polished as this one in my opinion.
@Cold_Ham_on_Rye5 жыл бұрын
Honestly I would rank 2, 1, 3. I get why people love the third one and it's a weird complaint but there is just too much to do in Spyro 3. Like 100% just feels like a grind at times getting all the eggs. With all the different minigame types. Especially because not all minigames are created equal. I think AntDude kind of hinted at that in his video as well. I like the 1st one more because it's literally the opposite. It's so chill. No minigames. Just run around. Collect gems. No backtracking. Perfect game. The second is just more charming than the first because of all the extra animations and characters. So, it's my favorite from a, "I love this world" standpoint.

--What about Skylanders?-- In all seriousness,i think it's nice that Spyro is a Skylander character. (His series 3 version was my first max level Skylander)
@MattPieti6 жыл бұрын
Spyro 1 is my favorite mainly because it feels the most "pure" to me. I thoroughly enjoy the gameplay of the series and the addition of minigames in Spyro 2 just feels like diluting the goodness. Ironically, the "emptiness" of the first game actually makes it feel more alive to me; it's its own living, breathing world that I can observe and explore while the plot in the second and third games make it feel more like a script that was written for me to follow. I also much prefer 3 over 2 because it feels more refined. If you're going to have the minigames, I'd prefer them to be in side areas accessed by portals so it doesn't feel like the levels are cut up into the "real" Spyro game and some other stuff. Plus I just liked the minigames and most of the level designs much more, and I actually liked all the characters from 3 whereas the only new characters from 2 that I liked were Hunter and Moneybags. I actually didn't like Spyro 2 when I first played it as a kid so I skipped it and came back to it later. I like all three now, but 2 is still easily my least favorite.

When i was a kid, i played a pirate version of Spyro 3, and the decoder of that version (paradox) just didnt seem to have done a great job on cracking the game, so it will ALWAYS glitch at the end of the play. In the third and fourth worlds eggs would start to disappear and stages you hadnt acess would be accessible, not to mention that you never managed to beat the final boss cause the game simply COMPLETELY RESET as you attempt to defeat her. Just now, almost 20 years later, i was able to purchase reignited trilogy and just be happy to complete this game, which marked my childhood.
@burnout7136 жыл бұрын
People really overrate those cutscenes from Ripto's Rage. I mean, they were fine, but didn't really add anything significant to the game for me. And Ripto definitely cannot claim he's the most threatening villain in Spyro. He definitely has a better boss fight, but throughout the game he's just a bumbling idiot. The Sorceress is masterfully built over time as a despicable villain and a legitimate threat. It's too bad this guy has an irritating hard-on for Ripto's Rage for some reason. Other than that, I kind of like him.
@vidguru00626 жыл бұрын
SlowBurne i agree. the second time i played spyro 2 in my adult life, it was really lacking compared to the third game, in my opinion. ripto was a boring villain, and yeah, an idiot.
@burnout7136 жыл бұрын
I played the third one first as a kid and was absolutely blown away by it. Ripto's Rage was actually the last one in the trilogy that I played and it remains my least favorite. It lacks the sense of progression you get in the other two games since it only has three home worlds. I also wasn't a huge fan of quite a few of the orb challenges. I still think Ripto's alright, and his boss battle is actually really cool, but yeah he's far from the level of The Sorceress.
@miwestraveler39866 жыл бұрын
Kinda hard to find Ripto threatening when his nickname is Shorty.
@PlanetZoidstar5 жыл бұрын
I think what people like about Ripto is he is a more proactive villain compared to Gnorc and Sorceress. You see him actively taking over Avalar and you have to chase after him. Gnorc and the Sorceress just wait for Spyro to make his way to them and never leave their bases. A shame we never really get a cutscene where Spyro confronts Gnorc or the Sorceress before the battle.
@burnout7135 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I can see that. Ripto is easily better than Gnasty Gnorc. But I felt as though the sorceress was really built up through her cutscenes throughout the game, had a legitimately disturbing end goal, and seemed like she was actively trying to stop Spyro's progress throughout the game. She was also built up with her snide little notes she left for Spyro at the character portals. Best of all, you saw how her actions of driving the Dragons away had actually affected the world as it was drained of magic. It's true you see Ripto and he actively confronts Spyro a few times, but what does he ever actually accomplish other than kick Moneybags around? Hard to get mad about that!
@KingofStrawberries6 жыл бұрын
To be fair to the Bianca thing with her following the Sorceress' plan, she does mention that she thought the dragons were just being brought over to bring magic back to the Forgotten Worlds, and totally rebels once she learns the Sorceress intends to kill them for a spell to make herself immortal, not keep the Forgotten Worlds active.

I think that Spyro 3 is the best (I loved it in my childhood and, with Crash Bandicoot 3 : Warped, it's tied to my love of plateformers, even if I played Gateway To Glimmer and Cortex Strikes Back afterwards. They were good, but not the same to me). I just don't understand why Hunter (a cheetah) could fall in love with Bianca (a rabbit). Now, all you have to do in this Spyro hype is to deal with The Legend Of Spyro in your videos. It sucks, we know, but for us who have stopped Spyro with the awful "Enter The Dragonfly" we want to know why it sucks. Please ;)
@Marmondos4206 жыл бұрын
I loved crash bandicoot 3 myself as a kid but when the release of the nsane trilogy came out, I realized just how much I loved the first 2 games rather than my all time favorite. 3 had the same cycle of levels in each hub area. Not to say that 1 and 2 werent the same but 1 did the best where everything felt so organic as far as platforming and the mechanics went. Hopefully the reignited trilogy doesnt do the same to me in a different way because 3 was the most amazing one.
