I never really played the originals but I definitely picked up on that inconsistency when it came to character models as I got into the second game in the franchise. A lot of the NPCs started looking kinda lifeless and cookie cutter which was disappointing to me because the first game had such a beautiful and consistent artistic direction. I think they may have blown their load a bit on lovingly animating every single dragon with a unique design and personality in the first game. Also, they really should've made the gems a bit larger. The foliage in this remaster is beautiful but it's obnoxious to have to backtrack for a gem I missed because it was buried in the grass, when with the original's flat textures said gem would be lying in plain view as a breadcrumb to guide you through the level

I'll admit, when I saw this in my recommended videos, I was sort of cautious to watch it - it's hard to tell which videos are going to be genuinely well-thought out reviews and which are going to be awful cynical video essays with poor faith arguments all over the shop. The original Spyro trilogy have always been incredibly important games to me and Spyro 3 is my all-time favourite game, it's something I still play at least like once a week. So naturally, Reignited was a pretty big deal, but I'm not blind to its flaws - I was actually pretty disappointed with the product as a whole and I was left with some really mixed opinions. This video, I felt, summed up a lot of what I took issue with in the game, and it felt like a really careful analysis of those problems rather than the much more unfavourable poor faith approach a lot of people seem to be taking in analysis videos. Overall just a really great video.
@Hwd4056 жыл бұрын
3D Platforming Lifestyle I'm not talking about Reignited specifically, I'm talking about video essays on KZbin in general. That being said I've definitely seen more than just "hype" for the game, there has been a strong critical response to the games, opinions seem to be quite mixed. If you want an example of a "poor faith argument" - where the criticism stops being helpful or constructive - then one hypothetical example may be a person who ignores the game's positives in favour of focusing on the negatives in order to depict the game as solely negative. I'm really critical of the game myself but I think part of me fears that criticisms that reduce the game to its flaws might result in a more uncertain future for Spyro.

I was finally bored enough to give it a chance, and holy crap, this is one of the best reviews I've seen on the game ever. Its a fantastic game in itself, and a lot of what you went over shown even more respect for it than even major fans are. Some great tuning, awesome artists, etc. Still it isn't without its faults, and yeah, it doesn't replace the classics and the team (and publisher) could do pay a little more attention to how these things are supposed to work. Classics don't get replaced, even if the ideal remake is supposed to outdo them. ...still, they could do the best they can to further blur any divides, and Reignited could burn a little brighter. The only two points I have are this: 1. Sgt Byrd's missiles DID hone onto enemies in Year of the Dragon for PS1; the honing was just stronger in Reignited. 2. There's one huge problem with the controls that you didn't mention: the hovering in Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon doesn't work if it's attempted immediately after a jump. It takes about a half a second before you can hover once you start gliding, so very short distance glides with a hover usually result in Spyro stopping in mid air to fall.

The hovering was one of the biggest problems for me, so many jumps that used to be simple turned out to be rather annoying.

What a gigantic missed opportunity that trilogy was. Glad to see I've found someone who agrees with me. 👍

I also wanna add another issue I had with the cutscenes in this game. The music, in the OG classics, you get the classic Spyro music composed by Stewart Copeland, and it wasn't just a re-use of any of the levels, they had their distinct tracks. Sometimes you hear a little guitar or bass building the tension, like when Ripto retreats from Glimmer. But in the Reignited Trilogy, we didn't get that unique tone of music that makes us all think of Spyro right away, we get the most generic, disney/fantasy music you can expect in any family cartoon.

You really knocked this one out of the park. I've noticed all the issues you've mentioned and Spyro 3 killed it for me. I got 100% in 2 and had a great time with it apart from one game breaking bug and some of the classic music not looping seamlessly. YotD felt completely wrong though. I disagree that the flight controls are better. They're drifty in the remake, making sharp turns very unresponsive and controlling Spyro after he goes through a blue boost star a complete nightmare. I noticed the superspeed tracks making Spyro build up speed that surpasses the thieves speed also, as well as the thief in Molten Crater running straight into the wall if you ran the wrong direction. Also had the bug in Enchanted Towers where Farley gets stuck up on that ledge. But the worst offender of the entire thing is the CAMERA. I gave up when it got to the Spooky Swamp bomb challenge, where the camera doesn't zoom out. Same thing happened with the Icey Peaks skating too. Sgt Bird flying through the lava tunnel and the camera pointing downwards was another one. And what the hell is with that awkward over-the-shoulder view in Bentley's stages? On top of all the mechanical issues, everything you said about the colours, animations and voice acting irked me also, though i couldn't put my finger on what was bothering me until you said it. Also the Fracture Hills fawns are Irish, given that it's a celtic themed level. I don't think it was supposed to be specifically Scottish, otherwise they probably would have stereotyped it with ginger hair and kilts.

On one hand I love these remasters/reboots/remakes the industry puts out, but on the other hand I always feel like it’s a seemingly insurmountable task to bottle a similar lightning captured so well by the originals. Too bad the industry also hates emulation so much, making us crave the R/R/R meal announced before us so that we look forward to literally anything with our favorite forgotten-hero-of-a-bygone-era’s name on it. Also the fact that nostalgia sells incredibly well doesn’t help the issue either. Give us the means to play the classics in a modern era without witch-hunting those (emulator creators/ROM sharers) who make it possible, while also making a new game with a given IP if you must. Thanks for the video B-Mask, you don’t upload often but whenever I see that you do, or just see you in general like lurking in someone else’s comment section, it is always a splendid sight!

Industry has to consider liscences when getting the games, so for them it's not as simple as "get the rom and throw it on the store". That's why it took Sony a good 3-4 years in the PS3 era to get most of the PS1 classics up. And even then, stuff like Disney PS1 games just don't want to budge for whatever reason. At that point, a remaster/remake may seem more feasible in terms of attracting a new generation and getting around some annoying liscences. But yeah, the "new game" conundrum is weird. Maybe it is just selling on nostalgia, but these remakes aren't that much easier to make than a full new entry. Especially not in packs of 3.

What you said at the end really made a lot of sense to me. The reason that a lot of these problems are so noticeable is because we have the original trilogy to compare them to. While making a new game requires a lot more work, I think having a newer experience would be much more gratifying than going through a game that I've already played 10 times and noticing all the things that they REMOVED from the original. Also the people who complain that people are being "too nitpicky" are the exact reason why these remasters are being made in the first place. As long as people are content with mediocrity, game developers will continue to squeeze money out of products that they already know are hits, and in 2060 we will be getting Spyro trilogy remastered 3X instead of Spyro 6 or 7 or whatever. The originals already exist, why not show us something new? I enjoyed Crash and Spyro remastered (because I already liked the originals) but I would have preferred it so much more if they had just released Crash 4 and Spyro 4.
@elton97216 жыл бұрын
I feel the Reignited trilogy could have been more polished. Idk how they'll feel about patching the remaster but they should consider at least tweaking things. We should definitely hold remasters/remakes to a higher standard, reignited came out wonkey and with odd changes. I did however enjoy the game beit the first spyro game had you be absolutely pixel perfect with jumps. It's a nostalgia out of 10. Wish they kept the separate menu intros though.

As I start to think about it more, after we just had Spyro Reignited Trilogy, Crash N. Sane Trilogy and now with the announcement of the Trilogy Bundle and Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled, I'm starting to wonder if the publisher and/or developer are just treading some old ground for profit to relive our love for the games we grew up with. Nostalgia is quite big now as it was then (what with Disney's retreading their animated movies and turning them into live actions now) and it will possibly keep holding on till the near future. Remember, there are games out there that invoke the sense of nostalgia (A Hat in Time, Octopath Travaler, Undertale and the new Rayman games, for example) and we shouldn't have to be blinded because there is a remaster of an old game because our beloved PS4 couldn't perform backward-compatibility (something that Microsoft has achieved). While I myself do enjoy both trilogies, I'm left to wonder what direction Activision will be taking. Just keep remastering Crash and Spyro games because it makes the charts in the UK and the US? Of course, simple as. But how long will the effect last on us until we're left thinking if they're ever going to make a brand new Spyro/Crash game and starts the cycle of the franchise lying dormant all over again? Wasn't there a time where the creator of Spyro (Charles Zembillas) wasn't going to be credited in the trilogy? I recall when I was listening to Cheshire Cat Studios and that moment when they brought up the analogy of a rock band reunited together and performing their old songs live to an audience and you're left wondering "well, why haven't they written new songs yet?" That's just my take on things. Still holding hope for the new MediEvil tho and I'm waiting to see what goes on in development.

On an actual related note. I have so many conflicted feelings on these remakes. In so many areas they knock it out of the park, but in so many different aspects they miss by a mile. I feel Spyro 1 benefited the most from the additions. Tightening some of the odder gameplay elements and while some of the levels lose there more dream like qualities the added detail and geography does wonders. Spyro 2 is when things start to get shaky. Though, over all I will say it still has some nice improvements. But cracks start to show with the dev team. The turtle soup challenge is when I noticed the team valuing uniformity over if the camera was put there for the reason. The orb thieves being another example. The funny thing with the lightning orb thieves is that I actually don't think that is from wanting to make it easier. Rather I think it's from programming errors etc. The thieves don't ever leave, and the orbs randomly duplicate themselves. It reeks of the team just porting the challenge in without actually adjusting it for the new engine. Something that gets FAR worse in Spyro 3. If Spyro 1 remake is finished and Spyro 2 suffers from some questionable choices, than Spyro 3 is straight up unfinished. During my Playthrough of Spyro 3 there was this air of...jankyness that was hard to shake off. Not just the glitches, but the character animations models weirdly snapping in place and characters control It less feels like something that has been play tested and more something that got to work and just shipped it out. You can feel it the most with Sheila and Bentely. Sheila air control is slightly better than the original game, but her ground control is mirsiable, it feels like you are dragging her along by a leash. Bentely suffers from just an awkward camera. It makes it feel like Toy for bob went "Why didn't Bentely always have this type of Camera?" only to present us with this and make us realize why Insomiac didn't go for it. The Mole mini game being another reason. Which is a damn shame since Spyro 3 was the remake I was interested in the most. I have always had mixed feelings on the game. And considering these remakes made Spyro 1 up there with Spyro 2 along with my favorites seeing Spyro 3 barely fix any of my gripes with the game (Agent 9 and Srgt Bryd play better, but that's about it) makes it feel like the weakest of the trilogy. Sorry for the long ass rant.

I’m so glad that someone else out there understands that just because something is new and shiny, it isn’t better by default. So much heart and soul went into these games and they are brimming with character. They don’t deserve to have that overlooked because they’re ‘for kids’.
@jasonhymes33826 жыл бұрын
At the same time just because something is old and nostalgic doesn't make it better either. I feel like a lot of the complaints for the remaster is that its not what they envisioned when they were a child. The game added things into spaces that lacked things. Especially as a child, it allows your imagination to take over. I think that if a adult had to choose between reignited or the original as a first time player, they'd enjoy reignited more.

The fact we live in a time when these great games can be remade to look like this should be celebrated. Nitpickers be damned. I grew up with the old games and love them, but these new ones paying homage are more than welcome. When he starts talking about impressionistic colors in the video it is laughable. More realistic graphics call for a more realistic pallet and it works. Jesus H. Christ, the artists working on this game know what they are doing. It is clearly beautiful.
@tetrishater55886 жыл бұрын
Yep. Anyone who enjoys remakes are just part of a mindless mob. Give me a break. Its all just creative bankruptcy and we shouldn't enjoy it. What a sad and shitty way of looking at it. The guy clearly has no clue what hes talking about. Yeah, its laughable. The colors look great. Game looks great. Fun to play. Nope, my bad. Its only for the mindless masses. There I was enjoying life and video games again. Silly me.

What was laughable was when he started talking about the color schemes. He can criticize all he wants, I'm just pointing out that some of the nitpicks seem a little dumb in my opinion. Again, in my opinion, the games are great and worth playing, and if someone liked the old games, they should definitely check them out. This isn't coming from a fan boy, just calling it how I see it.

I came into this video expecting to hate it but found myself agreeing with pretty much everything. I wish you'd mentioned Elora's face though; it felt really really uncanny to me, especially the sides of her mouth.
@wingedflyingforce51396 жыл бұрын
OMG, thank you! finally someone NOT sugar coating elora and saying she is BETTER than og, just because "ooooh! new and shiny equal better than old!". Not to mention elora looks almost NOTHING like a faUn and more like a faWn with a poor human wing, and plastic surgery to give a human nose and human shaped head! Elora was supposed to be like the land version of little mermaid, But on land, and instead of a fish tail, deer feet for ONLY the bottom. Plus with a attitude of a: sassy, straightforward, laid back, chill, leaderly tone, that doesn't take BS, basically she would be a more confrontational (Not TOO confrontational) version of Sally acorn from Sonic SAT-AM (TV show). Now, she is like a mix of ember from hero's tail (minus marriage part and as annoying voice), starfire from teentitans.... GO, and the negative aspects of star butterfly from "Star vs. The forces of evil", and mixed altogether with a LITTLE BIT of stereotypical ditsy air head girl, to male the new elora. I know not everyone sees the details that way and/or can pick up the changes, but if you truly and honestly focus, you can see the changes. I mean, people's excuse for her to be human is the hair, nose, and head shape (sometimes the even count the arms). By that logic, the sorcerers can be counted as human, for she has lipstick, a mole, human fingers with claws, and a somewhat human nose, or Sheila, with her somewhat human shaped upper half, her hair, her clothing, and etc. That's a bad excuse to claim she still has human in her. The fact she isn't human is made more prominent when you look at the satyrs, which ARE GOATS NOW, when they where only supposed to be a special male version of the fauns, but even the male fauns and females are less human now than ever! And then you people who use the fact the slightly played the game when they were younger (even though they could be lying), as a excuse to call themselves "fans", thus making their opinions and influence "valid" to the spyro fandom.

@@expendableindigo9639 actually, he is pretty tame. Maybe you need to calm down? Atleast the old had an excuse for not looking so good. This new one looks atrocious and falls in sort of the uncanny valley. No, it doesn't look fine. The new one looks even more bland and unsettling to me.
@Themurderin6 жыл бұрын
@@dewithedragon7612 lol Telling Indigo to calm down when his reply was objectively the most tame of the three? I mean sure, maybe the old designs look better to you than the new ones, but translating that into a different graphical fidelity and arguably different art-style could've ended up as jarring or off putting to old and new fans alike. I would also imagine that the purpose of a remake would be to bring back old fans while still appealing to new people whom the developers would want to bring on to the franchise as new fans, so compromise is to be expected for both parties. As for Zion's last bit, saying that people who only played the game slightly, heard about it in the past or are simply interested in the concept aren't entitled to a valid opinion is counter-productive to the purpose of a fan base; a group of people who come together to express their interest and opinions on a thing that they enjoy enough to want to connect to other people with varying ideas. By the way, I should probably point out that I'm not even necessarily a Spyro fan per say other than the fact that I did kinda play the first 2 games when I was a kid only renting them from the video stores of old. Hell, I only really show interest in it because of its connection to old school Crash. I have no strong opinion for either argument, I'm just speaking objectively.
@wingedflyingforce51396 жыл бұрын
Yes, objectively by your standards, his is the most tame. Sure, the new would appeal to you, but it did put off a good portion of the old fans, not all mind you, but a good portion of the old fans. As for my last bit, all I said was the people who only played a little and use it to claim themselves as fans, not that their opinion wasn't valid or did I anywhere mention people who heard it in the past or like the concept, that's on you bud. I said just that small instant doesn't make you a fan, you may like the game, or played a little but in the past, but that doesn't instantly make you a fan. It takes a little more (as in playing the whole game as an example) than playing a little bit to call yourself a fan. But seeing as your one them who seems upset that I said that small feat alone of "you can't call yourself a fan because one tiny moment (that may or may not be true, or just an excuse to control the outcome of a game)" that got you to come out of your way to try to get on dewi for pointing the more obvious thing and to act cool, when your aren't seriously taking this serious, more as a joke to attempt to make yourself this "brave (*cough* white *cough*) knight" sure says alot about your statement, huh? Also, you seem to not know what a fan base really is to be a group of admirers of a certain subject that stay with that subject, usually from day one, and they tend to make sure things are, in videogame, movie continuity, and comic book cases, that most of the new stuff has a concistantcy to it, and remains for the most part faithful and error free. A real fan's job is to both praise and criticize both the original and new, and not be biased in anyway about the other. So, the other guy's statement about calming down just because the new was criticized and basically saying that the new is better all-around without critism, is actually the REAL one telling people who don't like everything that their opinions aren't invalid, not the guy who criticizes the game for it's flaws (IM(through logic, 1st amendment, true critic)O). FYI, I was never a spyro fan either, I was a SKYLANDER'S fan, the most hated "spyro" game in the franchise, yet I LOVED that series. It also helped me learn about TLOS series, which I grew to somewhat like, then I learned about hero's tail, and finally IF spyro, which I, before the spyro reignited was just announced, played FULLY, with it fresh on my mind, so It was ironic that the game got announced right after I beat the game. I was a 16 year old when I played, and I am a few years older now, so it's not Nostalgia that I notice the differences, it's the fact I like it when stories draw from real culture and taught it to younger kids, keeping it alive, and staying faithful to that culture. Using "It's just a game, it's not real" or "it's better because they don't look like muppets" is a lazy excuse to justify bad character design, a bit buggy game play, and irionic considering that the old game is it's(the "remaster" which is more close to a remake) SOUL purpose existance for existing is the old game. Plus, when you claim to be a "faithful remaster" of course it needs to look and act like the old, with at the MOST, it only gets a HD update with better animation, lighting, voice acting, etc. Not: dumbed down weapons, millienial trends, spineless females(in personality), half cartoony acting half wannabe real life, confused gang, somewhat cringe worthy game we got with spyro reignited, but I freaken love the game even with all it's faults. I love that toys for bob made this game under the amount of time given by Activision, and I like alot of the creative liberties save a few. I love most of the new voice acting, and love the remaining, that I getting ready to replay it all over again. Just because some calls out something that everyone else either sugar coats or is to afraid to admit the actual unpopular opinion, doesn't mean they are the ones who need to "calm" down. If anything, telling them to be quit, or saying that they have nostalgia because they dont agree with everyhing, is actually the ones devalidating other's opinions. Sorry if you see it otherwise.

People might be stuck working on something that they aren't a fan of and just need to get it done, the most passionate have limitations to work around and time limits to keep in mind. Based on the recent layoffs, I'm afraid if there is a new Spyro on the horizon, it will doubtlessly be a hampered product. I watched this video ages ago and only felt compelled to comment now based on the recent news, but yeah I gotta say I was kind of underwhelmed by Reignited, as someone who prefers 3 and 2 over 1 (in that order). It is as you said, the developers at Toys for Bob had ambition, but there was the crunch and corporate meddling that lead to a product that seems half-baked permanently, even if they did patch it. I wonder if anyone has thought of trying to create a fan patch for Reignited to fill in the myriad of gaps to at least make the rest of the games seem more consistent quality-wise to the first one? Not that it'd be an easy endeavor but it'd be a somewhat rewarding endeavor at least, if only to make Reignited feel true to the ambitions of the Reignited team, even if some ideas didn't land for us.

I know there will always be something different but they didn’t have to go far to change some of the things that didn’t need to be changed like Ripto’s voice. I have no idea why they told the original voice actor to make Ripto sound like a scrawny little bastard, in the original he sounded more calm yet menacing that was meant to be taken... you know... SERIOUSLY. I can see why this game looked rush and to be honest, that’s sad especially for my beloved game
