When little me and my mum were playing through this game many years ago we bought a playstation magazine which had the location of all 80 dragons. Actually it had 79 - the missing dragon was the one from Haunted Towers. We phoned up the magazine, who put through to some other people, who put us through to the writer of the article, who finally explained to us that they weren't able to find the final dragon in time for the article to be printed. Luckily he had since found the dragon and was able to walk us through it on the phone. Whoever you are sir, you were our hero!
@sku45946 жыл бұрын
Glad someone else remembers this. I needed just that one dragon, and the Playstation magazine claimed it had the guide to all of them on it's cover. Imagine my disappointment when the magazine claimed that the final dragon did not exist in Haunted Towers and it was a glitch. I could see and hear it wobbling through the ceiling! It was definitely there. Yet the official Playstation magazine claimed it didn't exist. It made it all the more satisfying when I managed to finally figure it out all by myself. I had outsmarted the official Playstation magazine and I felt like a total genius.

The problem about Haunted Towers that alot of people don’t mention is that once you finally get to that secret room you have to climb the stairs to get to the top where you get the perma-superflame. The whole room is filled with invisible haunted armors that will come to life once you get too close to them. You would think to yourself ”well we just try to carefully bypass them and deal with them once we got the superflame” but here’s the thing: The last haunted armor at the VERY TOP of the stairs is programmed to ONLY BLOCK you, and it’s impossible to get past it. So you basically have to get to the top of the stairs very quickly before it comes to life. If you don’t make it you have to start the level all over again, which means YOU HAVE TO DO THAT DREADED SUPERSPEED SECTION ALL OVER AGAIN!

The level I will remember forever is Haunted Towers for sure. Tree tops was definitely the second hardest but I don't remember how I completed that one as a child. But Haunted Towers frustrated me to no end because of that damn hole in the roof and because I could see and hear the dragon up there but had no idea how to get it. At some point I decided to commit to finishing "that level" I kept screwing around doing random stuff and figured it out. After doing it I was like "holy shit ! So that's how you do it !" and I was so happy because I got 100% and was able to get into Gnasty's loot level.

The five toughest levels in this Spyro game (PS1 version) are as follows: 5] Jacques is both the fifth boss level and a level with TWO platform puzzles involving two fools: one leads to a key for a treasure chest and one leads to a dragon in front of a remote section of the level. 4] Alpine Ridge contains green druids who insist on moving everything in sight. Time your jumps carefully when taking out druids who close off certain areas to avoid falling in the water. 3] Toasty contains pouncing pumas/dogs/whatever as well as shepherds who may knock you senseless. This is the first boss level AND the first level without any sheep/goats/whatever to keep Sparx the dragonfly strong, so be careful here. 2] Dark Passage actually contains TWO passages, one leading to the exit and one leading to a firework for a steel box near the exit. Also, some enemies change into larger forms, and you need to flame the fools to keep them small. 1] Tree Tops (Need I say more!)

I wouldn't say "unintuitive" just "obtuse". Secrets should be like that, and 100% should be tough.
@temporaltomato30218 жыл бұрын
I agree, he seemed to overuse that word a bit, many times when it didn't seem applicable to me. These were all intentionally laid out challenges, each with a single intended solution (minus Bog enemies, which could feasibly be seen as unintuitive). If there had been multiple ways to reach these difficult platforms/areas mentioned in the video through abuse of game mechanics and environments, then "unintuitive" could be the right word. But he makes it sound like the level designers were just throwing crap at the wall, so to speak, when really you can tell that they knew EXACTLY what they were doing in each instance.
@trenzinhodaalegria80127 жыл бұрын
But I do think it is purposefully counter-intuitive (unintuitive) because it's a level design that challenges the intuition of people. Those are levels that pretty much glitch the intuition of the players, the solution can be found by testing possibilities that most people would see as attempts to break the game.
@ViceAdmiralHoratioNeIson6 жыл бұрын
Exactly. 100 percenting a game isn't "completing" Spyro, defeating Gnasty Gnorc is. Getting 100% on all levels is an added bonus challenge, like the secret Legendary ending of Halo 3.

You know what, I really think the Spyro games helped inform who I became as a gamer. I absolutely love challenges and exploration, and Spyro 1 had a whole lot of them. I too remember most fondly the levels that were an utter *bitch* to beat because I also remember what it felt like to do so, how accomplished and creative I felt for thinking about the level in a way I thought was totally ingenuitive. I love pushing games to their breaking point (which is why I so enjoyed the swimming-in-air glitches later on down the Spyro road), and I also relish the feeling of pride after overcoming something walling-off progress in a game (like when I beat the final boss of Kingdom Hearts 1 before my older siblings did at a mere 8 years old), and I'm so grateful that I had games as great Spyro's to introduce me to gaming so intimately.

To be fair, I think the main reason why Spyro the Dragon is usually considered the hardest of the three games is because you can't cheat Sparx to have him guide you to the closest gem, so you really have to 100% the game on your own wits, which effectively doubles your playtime without a walkthrough lol However, when I replayed Spyro the Dragon recently I did notice a lot of traps as mentioned in Misty Bog, with a guantlet of different enemies that attack you. I also notice enemies like to attack you when they're off-camera, something the enemies in the sequels will never do

Nice video Philip, right in the childhood! I can't control myself much longer so I need to share this: I remember finding the hidden part of Haunted Towers by myself at 8, was such an achievement and a great way for me to understand level design overall. BUT, the one level I detested the most was "Toasty" in the Artisan homeworld which you could get to if you jumped on all the stone platforms near the lake (which was considered a shortcut to unlock the level that I found out by myself back in the day when time was of no importance). There was something very scary about that level, it felt like it wasn't part of the game especially since I discovered my way of unlocking it. Annoying camera angles, fast enemies, unsettling background song and so early in the game...
@MrMaxim8 жыл бұрын
You are correct, the stone platforms were never something you needed to do to unlock Toasty, it will only open Sunny Flight, sorry about that! You have to beat at least one other level before the dragon head opens. It was just bad timing as I probably tried jumping on the stone platforms before checking if the Dragon Head would open which it did! At least now I get to play Spyro 1 again to confirm this! I never used the "Roll" but I do understand now how it could have helped a lot, yes especially against those dogs! But as a side note: Changing camera settings to "Active" is something i highly recommend and is something I've done on all 3 Spyro games, it's helpful. ^^

But with Tree Tops, knowing where to go is only half the battle. The only way I got the courage to beat the game after losing so many lives (and many Game Overs) was a cheat code for 99 lives. I've since been able to beat the game without it- but that doesn't mean Tree Tops doesn't kill me every now and then. Misty Bog, totally agree about the enemies. It's hell. Dark Passage, I find to be a lot worse. I'd never gotten through the level without taking a hit. Just timing the turtles and the Cupids when they're together is near imossible.

just played through reignited and had all the memories of these levels come back to me. i remember leaving jacques and tree tops uncompleted when i was a kid for sure, only actually getting those final dragons when i played through them as a teenager ten years ago once youtube could help. ten years later though, i still needed help with tree tops and haunted towers. managed to luck my way through jacques surprisingly enough. internet communities weren’t a thing when i played these games the first time but it’s reassuring knowing everyone else had as much trouble

Tree tops you can literally just jump off and hold right to jankily get immediately on the final ramp. Doesn’t work in the remake though. I actually worked it out myself in the remake and it took about half an hour of route planning using the mini map.

The first Spyro will always be my favorite and most memorable; even the music strikes a cord in me the other games didn't, though I love them all to death. I remember getting 100% everywhere else but Haunted Towers when I was in 1st grade, and it wasn't until two years later that I figured it out and finally got the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction of playing through Gnasty's Loot and 100%ing the game. I kindof wish they had the same idea for the other two games; though unintuitive, levels like Tree Tops and Haunted Towers forced you to think outside the box. Straightforward levels just aren't as fun; there are no secret areas, no secret enemies, no secret treasures that give you that same sense of accomplishment when you finally find them after so much trial and error.

TheMeekWarrior I totally get what you are saying, in the first game almost all the levels had some sort of secret area to get to (Ice caverns three extra lives) and you felt great when you figured it out by yourself, while I do like the 2nd and 3rd game it would have been interesting to see this kind of gameplay in the sequels rather than more straightforward levels with mini games.

Gotta say, despite the lack of polish found in Spyro 2 or 3, I always found that the first game in the series had the most character, whether it be the designs of the levels themselves, or the atmospheric, and memorable sound track. In fact, the game's lack of over all polish, kind of gave it an experimental vibe, a feeling that few other games have really stirred in me. Don't get me wrong, if I had to pick a favorite, it would probably be Spyro 2, but for some reason or another, I always find myself coming back to the original tittle, just to experience this odd semi iconic bit of intrigue, and now nostalgia. Nice video!

2kliksphilip Yay! I finally got a response out of you! :D Do you like pets, and what kinds do you prefer? Do you have any? What is your plan for the distribution of DD2? How's your love life? What's your favourite porridge?

Treetops was hands down the first thing that came to mind!! Can't say I ever really struggled with the other ones you mentioned though. Pity it's rare to find such amazing 'unintuitive' design in modern games, Spyro 1 was a true gem!!

That's hilarious that a gem fell off the map. When I was about 10 I was playing the 3rd Spyro game (the Ninja level you show) and before you get inside the cannon two ninjas drop down but they're suppose to knock 2 gems down with them. For whatever reason my game glitched and these gems never fell down. I beat the entire game, got all the eggs and all the gems...except those two. Eventually I looked up and could see the shining gems just out of my reach. Ended up having to go to a friends house and beat his version (in which the two gems DID fall) in order to get to the super secret level. As you said; I don't remember the fun I had in that game. I remember the pain. Great video!

I remember figuring out the timer puzzle in Jacques and being so proud I ran and told my Dad. When I finally 100% it he cheered for me. Almost all of my Spyro memories are tangled up with my Dad.

Haunted Towers was the one level I never could complete as a kid, and it drove me nuts. That hole in the ceiling haunted me, and you can even hear the dragon shaking on the other side of the wall at the base of that supercharge ramp! I looked it up as an adult, and now I do that part first so that I have the benefit of the permanent gold fairy for the rest of the level. It's so satisfying, even though I didn't figure it out on my own--and never would have, for that matter.

I don't remember the first game, but I remember Spyro Year of the Dragon since I've played that one the most and it was still quite hard even for me in my 20s. The last few levels of that game are brutal, not to mention the various skateboard challenges which took me hours to complete. I'd say that Crash Bandicoot Warped was quite hard as well. Relatively easy to complete, but to get every single gem in the game seems really difficult. There are some gems and some parts of the game that I still have no idea how to get to. Not to mention of the last levels where your only source of light in the dark can suddenly leave you if you don't keep up with it.

Frogs were the only challanging enemies for me. But tree tops, you were thinking way too hard to find a solution to get there, when all you really have to do is relaod the level and follow the green thief

I remember not having the internet to look up guides too and finally got 100% yeaaaars later from GameFAQs. At some point on the ramp you can hear the dragon directly above you shaking, and not knowing how to access it haunted me. Great video. We thought the exact same things (even though I was 5 when I first played).

Those powerup chaining events were by far the most memorable and FUN part of the original spyro, they're a large part of the reason why I will be getting the reignited trilogy.

treetops + Metalhead are my spyro enemy levels treetop well everyone who has played and even watched this video knows the pain of treetops. But metalhead i always forget where the rest of the gems where you pick up the key are at its so hidden.
