SQUADRON LEADER MARK LONG AWESOME TYPHOON PERFORMANCE TAKE OFF 29 SQUADRON • RAF CONINGSBY

A Eurofighter Typhoon with callsign TYPHOON67 flown by Squadron Leader Mark Long of 29 Squadron (OCU) taxis past with double fist pumps and requests a 'Performance Take Off' (PTO). Performance departures at RAF Coningsby are reminiscent of the English Electric Lightning, which would leave any spectator stunned as the Lightning would climb and accelerate vertically within seconds.
Both the Typhoon and English Electric Lightning had similar performance where the thrust to weight ratios of both aircraft were a 1:1 ratio, allowing the aircraft to accelerate vertically. The Lbs of thrust produced from the aircraft was more than the weight in Lbs of the aircraft. Of course, the more payload, the less acceleration, but with this sort of power, it doesn't bother them too much.
Aircraft have to request a Performance departure, they are not allowed to execute it without the clearance from ATC. There are many reasons for PTO, such as a short runway, clear aircraft traffic, barriers, problems on runway, or even just to get to somewhere fast.
Please note that the aircraft bears the 12 squadron markings but was in fact flown by a 29 squadron pilot.

Some Typhoons do seem to be more powerful than others. Some struggle in the vertical and run out of puff. The recipe for a good performance take off seems to be -have a rolling start and keep it low and level for as long as possible to build up speed.Lovely roll out at the top!❤❤❤❤

Naah, they're all the same - but the pilots often have different priorities. 🙂

Each pilot will do it differently, each take off is cleared to different flight levels, each Typhoon has a different payload, ultimately, they are all different but not the engines. Remember the Typhoon can accelerate vertically so this is impressive. If the Typhoon executed a quick climb then it would most likely find the moon 🤙🏼
