I just received my Steinhart yesterday and I have to say that it is very nice looking, feels good and well built for the price. I'm shocked with what you get for the price and personally, I love the darker blue and lighter red combo. I bought the jubilee as well and I do wish it was polished, but it still feels really good to wear and super easy to size and switch out. All in all, I think its great for the price and you really can't go wrong.

it's a great watch. still wearing right now as I'm writing.i don't mind that jubilee has no high-polish other than the sides. the watch itself is mostly brushed and not that flashy, so I think it works and helps to make it feel more tool than blingy unlike the more modern Rolex gmt master 2s. sort of why i think my other Pepsi GMT watch, the squale, works better with the high-polish center links of its jubilee Enjoy it!

I LOVE my new Ocean 39 Vintage. My first high beat, my first GMT. I am really happy. Apparently, it is an homage to the original Rolex GMT Master. No crown guards etc. I must say, I wish it had a Cyclops, :-(. I think I could buy 10 or 15 of these Swiss watches for the price of one Rolex. I just do not, nor do I ever anticipate having in the future, the kind of money a Rolex runs. I am SO blessed to have such a dream watch as my new Steinhart. BTW, I have a question: (Time to ask the Scientist!) My Steinhart runs about 10 seconds a day fast. I saw on another channel that the ETA 2893-2 has daily slop allowed as between 7 seconds a day slow and up to 20 seconds a day fast was within spec for this non certified movement. Does that ring about true to y’all? Thanks a million! GBU

Both very nice watches for the money but I feel 39mm is the sweet spot. If they did a gloss dial then it would make a huge difference to the look and add real depth. I am not a fan of the matte dials. Glad neither ship with cyclops. Great fun for such a reasonable outlay.

I would keep both of these. I think they are different enough. Same movement, both Pepsi GMTs, both on Jubilee style bracelets, and that's really where it ends, IMO. The Steinhart gives off a way more vintage vibe (as intended), whereas the Squale has more of a modern feel. Both great watches. I'd go with the Steinhart if I could only have one.

Fyi, I might have kept the squale had the lume application ohln the handset not been so weak, the dial wasn't that good either, but the handset was the worst and faded fastest compared to the dial indices. But, the ceramic bezel was very good lume. However, not much point if no handset to see in dark and reference time. The Ocean 39 was a near keeper, but after some heavy thought and examination, the colors didn't work for me. Bezel too dark and dull, the dial with faux patina overdone and too even applied. I don't mind there tone, but it didn't make sense the printed text is exact same color as the faux patina lume. They should be different as they are not the same paint material. It just looked too clean and everywhere, looked a bit too artificial as a result. There should be difference in color, even slightly, at least between the lume and printed text/logo on dial. Just my humble opinion.

Really unfortunate, I love the vintage but that lug to lug seems so much longer than it is because of the barely curved lugs...why release a 39mm version with lugs to serve the opposite purpose
@1SaG4 жыл бұрын
That's what I thought about the 42mm ... until I had it on my wrist. Looks just fine to me - and to everyone I asked. The 39mm OTOH should suit guys (and girls) with wrists quite a bit smaller than mine just fine. Mine are 17cm (~6.8 inches). I now own 2 42mm Steinharts and the 39mm Vintage GMT model shown in this video. My point is: Don't judge any watch by pictures and videos alone. They can be pretty misleading. The real test is to have the watch in your hands and on your wrist.

The lugs never bothered me on the Steinhart. At 39mm they sit fine on my sub-7" wrist. If you were to talk about the Ocean One with 42mm case, that's another matter. Overall, Steinhart quality has never disappointed me. Squale... With as much history in dive watch making as it supposedly has, I don't get why they can't do better lume? idk, for me , there's no excuse a dive watch doesn't have very good lume.

Enjoyed the video. Tough choice, both beautiful watches by great companies. The Steinhart vintage is a little to washed out for me so I bought the 39 GMT Pepsi with jubilee and love it. Plus the blue matches the red better on the Steinhart. I prefer 40mm so I just received in the mail today the Squale black classic diver and think it is perfect (for me). Aluminum bezels just look better than ceramic in my opinion. That flat, toyish blue that we see on the Batman and most other blue ceramic models from most manufacturers doesn’t look nearly as good as, for example, a black bay with a blue aluminum bezel. The way the matte aluminum diffuses light rather than having that glossy reflective appearance and the depth of color you can achieve with aluminum just makes it superior in my opinion, at least aesthetically. Obviously the durability of ceramic is lightyears better than aluminum but if you take pretty good care of your watches and you don’t carelessly slam your wrist into door jambs, walls, etc, an aluminum bezel works just fine. And if you do happen to scratch the hell out of your aluminum bezel, they’re pretty simple and cheap to replace.

I generally prefer aluminum or steel bezel inserts over ceramic. but, I am open to ceramic for different look on certain watches.

The reason why the hands on the squally doesn’t reach the edge is because they went with an oversized case in relationship to the hands, it does look more like the Rolex GMT if you’re going for that sometimes the forced patina that they put on the indices to make it look like it’s aged starts to get old on the wearer.. after owning it a while, they would prefer the white indices… these watches are not precise for time anyway, but really are just for jewelry and an idea of the time, so it doesn’t matter about precision hand, reaching the indices. The tan paint to make it look old thing is a fad to look vintage. I still love both watches and would like to own both.

I'm just thinking, these days, with price hikes... Is the Seiko Sumo Pepsi now the bext pepsi original design to invest in? You can still find them for around US500... and cheaper than SKX. I know its a big watch, but it wears more like a 42mm, especially if you look at the dial real estate, and measure bezel tip to bezel tip which is the true measurement if you conside the watch optics. I know its again a little against the 39-41mm trend at the moment with the vintage-sphere taking over, but these are all fads, and they come go longer term. I think its the best design now for originality and price at the moment. Plus it has enough cult followers. The above models are nice, but are very much homages...
@khronokraze2 жыл бұрын
I acknowledge the sumos design and popularity to some. But, for me, I just felt it visually looks a little bloated. And, there were some design details I never fell in love with such as the dial and handset as well as the bezel insert font for the numbers. But, in terms of original Pepsi diver design, I suppose it might be.

Thanks for the vid, very good job getting all the details in. Wish more people would spend time like this showing all spects of their watches. It’s a big help for those of us who are interested. Also, lug to lug lungth doesn’t seem bad, althought the lack of lug curve is little concerning on the Steinhart. I still ordered one today, and I’m hopeful it will fit my flat 7.25” wrist OK. I actually like that retro diver case shape visually, hope it sits well enough.

hmm. don't know what to tell you? sounds like you're accustomed to somewhat larger case sizes. the 39 steinhart might be perceived as a little small for you. but, 7" is generally a good mid range for many watches to wear well on. I think it's a matter of taking the time to get acclimated to a smaller case size and then it may not seem that small anymore. alternatively, steinhart has their ocean one watches in 42mm. the other watch I used to own which is maybe as close to this one was the Steinhart Ocean One Dual Time Vintage GMT Premium. it has an antique silver dial instead, not the bezel is move aged Pepsi insert, thinner bezel i general, box sapphire crystal, and a nice oversized crown with no crown guards.

I am planing to buy Steinhart Ocean 39 GMT.2 two-tone CHOCOLATE Diver Watch (jubilee strap 5 links with 3 links gold colour pvd-coated) for my 50 years anniversary but I can not find a good review about this watch. I've never bought a gold tone watch and I'm worried about that gold pvd-coated 3 links may have problems in the future and lose the gold tone, the same with the bezel that is aluminum brown/gold (not ceramic that I will prefer). In your watch knowledge what do you do you think about this model? It will be a good choice or maybe better go for another model? Do you see any weaknesses in this model? Thank you in advance.
@khronokraze9 ай бұрын
Well, I've not a lot of experience with gold plated watches. Personally, I wouldn't worry about it. The Steinharts are well made and relatively inexpensive. By the time it may wear out the plating, I think either you may not care accept it for it's long use and well-used appearance. Or, find it's time to buy a new watch. If it worries you so much, then don't buy anything plated. Or, see if maybe they may have a special hardness coating applied to prolong the longevity of the finishing. Either save and spend top dollar for solid gold components. Or, avoid all together and just get stainless steel. And, get a ceramic bezel instead of an aluminum or steel one. There are SO many choices out there these days at all price ranges.

Both are fine. The Squale has better case shape namely due to the lug profile. Curves down more. The Steinhart, as you may know from other reviewers, has straighter lugs. There will likely be a slight gap between wrist and lugs. It's never really been a problem for me as the lug to lug is relatively short and it is still a comfortable watch to wear. The gap is only noticeably at certain angles. Otherwise, it seems to look and feel fine on wrist.

Yes it's all ceramic. I've actually seen this exact color and tone as aftermarket he's Seiko mod parts... Which is a bit if a turn off. 1st, the color tones just don't match, as I stated. Pick a solid red that works with the blue half. OR, make the blue have a metallic sheen that matches the red half. 2) although I am into and have done modded Seiko's myself.. I just don't fancy the thought this part used on the Square is exact same as the ones I've seen as aftermarket mod part. Kind of cheapens the feel to me knowing this in the back of my head. I have to say Steinhart did a much better job with their last Ocean 39 Pepsi GMT where they now have a ceramic Pepsi bezel insert option in addition to the aluminum they had first. The colors are a way better match on the Steinhart Pepsi GMT. 3rd, as I think Ive stated. I've been disappointed in Squale lume. It just seems weak in comparison. @@unclejack168 the squale I sold first. Then the Steinhart. No, no sellers remorse. I had my own good reasons for selling them. The Squale Pepsi colors were wrong. They just looked like from 2 different bezels.. the red from a Pepsi aluminum, the blue from a batman. Additionally, the lume sucked... As it usually seems to on the few Squale I've ever owned. Rather, on this one, the lume priority was backwards. The bezel actually really good and last the longest. But, the dial seems to fade relatively fast in comparison and the dial indices lasted 2nd and with the hour and minute hands third. If anything it should be reverse with hour and minute hands to last the longest. The Steinhart didn't pop with the red and blue bezel colors. I understand it is imitating a vintage look, but I discovered I prefer the red and blue to pop more. Lume for vintage fauxtina was surprisingly good all around. But, the use of the fauxtina color was the exact same for the print on the dial. That didn't make sense as the print is not supposed to be same print material as lume. They should have left the print white or at least a lighter off white color and not same as lume. As it is one dial and overall, the faux vintage look looked too clean and even for an aged look. Artificial looking. So, no regrets. The search for perfect Pepsi GMT continued and continues. The last best one I had was the Yema Superman GMT Red/Blue Gnomon Exclusive Limited Edition. If anything, the color is more pinkish than red with the numbers within it also being very dull and rather hard to discern. For this reason the watch is a disappointment to me. I wrote this in a review to Gnomon Watches, where I bought the watch and subsequently pointed it out to Steinhart as well. So far though, a couple of weeks later, Gnomon has not posted the review and neither Gnomon nor Steinhart has responded to me.

@@1SaG I've concluded that this watch simply "suffers" from being too photochenique with the camera picking up details and colors that the naked eye will miss, thus setting you up for a disappointment if you buy the watch based only on what the pictures and video will show you. I have since paired the watch with a high quality, chocolate brown, distressed leather strap, which helps bringing the bezel forward, making the whole ensemble look MUCH, MUCH better. Only problem I have now, I set out to buy a homage diver, which I feel I haven't accomplished. So when I do buy one within the next several months, it too will probably be a Steinhart, as I have researched this corner of the market extensively and I just can't find another place with a better bang for the buck.

thanks for watching. Sorry, I don't really like it, the new squale vintage GMT. I have the previous version,obviously, that does not have the vintage look and It looks much better and appropriate. It just makes no sense to me mixing the most modern Rolex GMT Master II homage and design by putting faux radium patina lume on it. It just makes no sense and does not match up.. the design of this watch is essentially current 2019 Style. The patina should not look like it was from 50 years ago. sorry, not a fan. The last one without the Vintage effect and just white lume was much better and makes more sense. just my humble opinion.

These gmts function identical to the Rolex with the exception of quick set. All three of the watches the two on your desk and the Rolex can measure time in 3 time zones.
@khronokraze3 жыл бұрын
Sure they can. It's just the difference in whether the GMT jumps or the main hour hands when you get to a new local time. The former which is usually the ETA 2893-2 is more of what some call the Work GMT. Pretty much you stay at your home time and use the GMT function to track other time zones. The later which is in the Rolex, and Omegas, and mostly higher end watches is softened referred to as the Traveler's GMT. More convenient to keep the GMT on home time and adjust main hands to new local time zone. You can find this sort of movement in certain entry level watches with ETA based C07.661 such as the Mido Ocean Star GMT (Mido Caliber 80) and new Hamilton Khaki Aviation Converter Auto GMT (Hamilton Caliber H-14). If u dont travel much but like to keep track of other time zones, the Work GMT is preferable. Conversely, If you do travel more, then the Traveler's GMT would be more desirable.

You mispronounced Squale. It's pronounced as "Squall-uh" not "Squall-ee". It's one of the most important dive watch companies in history. Comparing anything they produce to a Steinhart, that has no pedigree, is quite blasphemous.

Brandon you are right i just bought a squale and i'm very satisfied i think the quality is much better than steinhart and i heard steinhart are using metal from china to construct the case
@khronokraze4 жыл бұрын
Regardless, in my experience between the two, the Squale isn't bad, but the Steinhart is still better. 39mm is a better size, for me I appreciate drilled through lugs, the bracelet is better and tapers more, you don'tpay as much for the Steinhart, and the lume is superior on the Steinhart as the Squale is unimpressive and has backwards lume priority. Besides, this is a comparison of watches I've owned and my opinion of the two. And, it seems enough people are interested in the comparison as they are both watches of interest and consideration to many that share similar design concepts.

@@khronokraze Opinions are just that, so no offense taken. Especially where size is the primary concern. That said, Squale made history making watch components, in particular, cases, for some of the world's first top tier diving watches. So, while we look to those other brands as premium, it's because they relied on companies like Squale to produce the parts to get them there. Steinhart simply doesn't have the pedigree or chops. They are a good company, and I love a lot of their watches but they aren't in the same league. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Write both companies and ask them to describe their build process. Only one is going to personally respond. And if by chance both do, only one is going to truly impress. That's Squale.

@@brandons3692 no offense given, no offense taken. I still dont get why a brand with such an established history of making sive watches still can't make and apply a decent lume for their divers?
