I have seen this subject beaten to death. I own two original Rolex, two 1960s Daytona, of which one is an original Paul Newman. So, probably a 100kUSD watch in today's market. Yet, I just purchased a Steinhart Ocean Once (and used!) and enjoy it immensely. No reason today to dish out 15k euro at once, when what many like me are seeking is to rotate watches on their wrists going for different looks every few days. Steinhart has 99% of the looks, great quality at un UNBEATABLE price. Rolex found the proper look for a manly watch - took them decades - I don't see the need to re-invent the wheel each and every time and, contrary to what you are saying, Jenni, I DO see value in copying - quality copy - such amazing design. Though I DO own Rolex as pointed above, I would never, ever buy a Submariner for 15k euro today .Thanks for the presentation - it helped me illustrate better my point where the Steinhart kicks ass

A “good” watch is one that brings a smile to its owner’s face. Maybe it’s out of a sense of pride, accomplishment, or simply because he or she likes the watch. Jenni, as a metallurgist, I have to correct you here. 904L steel is not more scratch resistant compared to 316L. It has better anti-magnetic and anti-corrosion properties. 316L is actually harder than 904L. 904L steel feels shinier because of the higher amount of chromium compared to 316L but also be aware that 904L contains more nickel. So, if you're allergic to nickel, go with titanium (316L also contains nickel, though lower than 904L).

I honestly think that homage watches really are a great way for regular, everyday people to wear and have the look of something that is unattainable in reality. Not many people can go spend $10k plus on a Rolex but many can go out and get a homage that still functions beautifully and gives you that expensive, classic look of a GMT MASTER 2, Rolex Sub, or even an Omega Speedmaster. These pieces aren’t fakes they are just the reality pieces for an average Rolex or Omega or any expensive watch lover. These homages expand the watch community to not only those who have an unlimited budget but to those who have a tight one. These people still love a pretty watch and for the price and features of a homage... it just cannot be beat!

Why would Rolex wish to allay expenses? Have you ever seen Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel or the likes having promotions or wishes to cut cost so as to make it more affordable? No. Why? Artificial brand prestige. Tbh these Brand all have something in common making smaller and less premium items to target groups of people that wishes to enter luxury market with a “ statement “ piece. It’s actually marketing 101 no “luxury” brand would ever reduce their price ever. During the pandemic in March, Chanel and LV reopened in China after China successfully controlled the pandemic and they thereafter increased the starting price of multiple products. It does not make sense financially, but brand prestige and “luxury” a statement piece are all things that influence people to purchase luxury items even during the pandemic to show they are well off. Humans are way more superficial than you think. So Rolex being a cheap entry watch to the world of luxury the last thing they would wish to do is lower their brand recognition/ prestige. Any non watch people would recognise Rolex as a symbol of success. Not everyone would be able to recognise grand SEIKO which makes fabulous good priced pieces. Why? Rolex brand recognition has been deeply ingrained into everyone for being reliable, no fuss and a status symbol for those who just made it in life. Everyone is willing to pay for the price it’s least of Rolex concern to sell at a lower price. To lower ones price is akin to setting up for customer thinking that promotion would be around the horizon that’s the last thing any brand would wish to do if they wish for brand prestige.

No, never the surviving Shelby Cobras are extremely expensive and rare. However, I would take a Factory Five Racing AC Cobra kit car to the track any day of the week and race the car like the original 65 Shelby Cobra was intended to be treated. Do I ever see myself wearing a Rolex 126710BLRO as it was originally intended to be worn as being steel Rolex Sports model? At the current prices? never. It would be a safe queen or instantly flipped to buy the Steinhart GMT and to pay off the rest of my student loans. The Steinhart GMT in this video is my Cobra kit car. I would wear it as it was meant to be worn, it would probably never leave my wrist for the foreseeable future.

Homages are not only an easy way to get pieces which are very expensive but the most important of all: they help people to get into the hobby and they are very very funny! Collecting it's not about brands but having fun loving watches, designs and stories and not everybody has the wallet to buy the "big deals"... But homages get close to the thing and are very enjoyable. I like homages a lot and they make people want to be into the hobby, and that is amazing!

A new Rolex Pepsi is impossible to get in retail stores. It now sells between AUD $ 35,000 to 45,000 in the reseller market here in Australia. Absolutely crazy! Steinhart and other homage makers allow real people with average salary to enjoy the design without paying for a watch the price of a brand new sedan!

I am really enjoying Homage watches, as they open the market to established luxury designs to people who are into watches but not necessarily have the budget to go for the originals that came up with the design. Our art teacher always encouraged us to copy in class, because nice art brings joy to people, so spreading that joy is a good thing :)

I see a lot of comments mentioning that everyone can’t afford the Rolex so they turn to a homage. I actually own both watches, the Rolex GMT Master 2 Pepsi and the Steinhart Ocean One GMT 39mm Ceramic Black, and I love them both 😊 They both have a spot in my collection and they both fill totally different purposes. I work at a kindergarten and I use my Steinhart as a daily beater, since it sometimes can become quite rough when playing around with 17 children all day long 😂 I find my work to be the perfect place for a homage watch, that’s sturdy and of good quality in itself and does not cost a fortune so that I can easily play around and bash it without worrying about damaging it. And still I get the look that I want 👍

If you don’t want to buy a Rolex and think it’s to expensive, why buy a replica that’s pretending it’s the thing that you don’t want to buy??? Why not buying something else entirely? Is it to impress people who can’t tell the difference? To impress girls with wealth that you don’t have? But hey, if you like wearing something made in a Chinese sweat-shop for a fraction of the cost you paid for it, and pretending that it’s something that it ain’t, then good for you 👍 I really don’t understand why you keep writing the same thing over and over? 😂 Sure, you paid $500 for a cheap replica, and you think you got a “sweat deal”. And ok, in your own world it looks the same... 😳 But in my world, it doesn’t matter if it’s the best replica in the world, it’s STILL NOT A ROLEX 😂 Doesn’t matter how hard you try, you’re still wearing a fake... It’s the same thing with the Adidas-pants we all wore in high school. There were a lot of guys wearing fakes. But we all knew who wore fakes and who wore the real deal. And wearing the real deal is just cooler, no matter how hard you try convincing yourself otherwise 👍🍾

We all love the Rolex designs, they're timeless and function great. In recent times the prices of Rolex (new and used) have skyrocketed, they have become unattainable for most people. So what do we do when we want to see a certain design on our wrist but can't afford it.. we buy homage watches. And I have to say Steinhart makes the best! The quality you get a that price point is amazing. I have held an 'Ocean 39 Ceramic' in my hand and I have to say they feel absolutely solid, especially the bracelet. Love your video as always. In all the decades I've been wearing watches: Omegas, Hamilton, Seikos, Casios, Timex and yes homage watches including a Steinhart Sub and GMT, never, not once, has anyone commented on my watch. 99% of people are to oblivious to notice. Of the 1% of people that do notice, 99% won't mention it. It's only that rare breed, the watch geek that will (a) notice, and (b) actually say anything to you about it. So don't worry about any potential embarrassment of having to respond to "Is that a real Rolex" with "no, it's a Steinhart/Parnis/Tisell/Squale/etc/etc." Odds are it'll never happen!

My comment is on the reaction of the wearer which is often telling. 1.Many homage wearers do because they can't afford or aren't willing to pay for luxury brands and are happy with their choice. 2.Many fake or replica wearers are obviously trying to deceive and will if they can. 3.Many Rolex wearers I've come across are disappointed that people often think their extremely expensive watch is a fake anyway. Correct Comment to 3:08 in this video. 904L is softer and scratches significantly easier than 316L. 316L contains more carbon and does not contain the soft alloy copper. 316L is the superior metal for watches when it comes to hardness. 904L is more resistant to corrosions (water, sweat etc ....) but is softer and hence you need to get it polished more often :) 316 L Stteel: 0.03 Kohlenstoffanteil (Carbon), 0% Kupfer (Cooper) 904 L Steel: 0.02 Kohlenstoffanteil (Carbon), 1-2% Kupfer (Cooper) :)

Finally, the large winding crown, characteristic of the first generation of TUDOR divers' watches to be waterproof to 200 metres (660 ft), is also presented in this new model. I look at them pretty close to how you describe as a "trial" watch before blowing away thousands on a real deal. Another aspect for me is that for about one grand I can get myself a small selection of pretty decent homage watches (consider I can spend a long time to do research on what is the best brand for the money, which often the answer is San Martin), to mix it up and suit my mood better. Another nice thing about them is that you don't have to be so afraid of them, but at the same time you do learn to subconsciously learn to be weary of it being there (like for instance when doing some really dirty or rough work, or just in general not bang your left wrist on any metal surface). And on a different note, I am a huge fan of watches, and I constantly dream of Omega, Rolex, Patek, etc, I would not actually purchase one at this point in my life simply because it wouldn't pair well with my income or savings. Instead I would like to have a small carefully selected collection with a mix of everything from Rolex homages to more original designs from Timex, Citizen, Seiko, etc that are in the same pricerange. And this is also why I think the Bulova Lunar Pilot is a blessing for someone like me, because even though I could just drain a huge sum of my savings on a Speedmaster, this Bulova is a good option, and I don't even feel like it's a cheap replacement of a Speedmaster, rather a watch with it's own history, it's own unique design, and frankly a good looking piece. The big, black dial does in my eyes reminds me of the dark emptiness of space, and it even makes me feel lonely when looking at it, and I like that feeling because I think that's how the astronauts would have felt it too when being alone and so mindblowingly far from the rest of the human race. And on a last point here about homage watches. And this is more a question based around a critical observation: Why would a $250 Chinese Daytona replica be considered a homage, whilst something like Tag Heuer Autavia is not? I have seen homages of other popular watches which also have done several huge design choices that differ them from their "original", just as TH has done, but they are still considered homage watches? Is it simply because of the different price and movement of the Tag that makes them not a homage?

Jenni, 904L steel is softer than 316L so it is actually easier to scratch than the Steinhart. 904L is more corrosion resistant. Make memories. On your death bed, are people going to remember you for the watches you had? Or the memories you made with people? Yeah, you only live once, but would you rather spend $30,000 on a watch that only you will enjoy for a short time, or spend that money travelling, helping others, or seeing friends/family, paying for their meals, going on trips with them, giving them gifts, helping the people you love in need. I've had expensive watches and homage or cheaper watches. I enjoyed the cheaper watches more because (1) I don't put a target on my back for thieves. (2) Affordables are cheaper, easier, and less stressful to service (3) High end watches are great, but they're not life changing and I wish people would stop pretending owning a $30,000 would make your life better. I had expensive watches and cheap watches and my life was exactly the same before and after, only with expensive watches I was slightly poorer and more stressed. Buy what you like, don't see watches as investments, just enjoy them, and you don't need the most expensive watch to enjoy it (unless you are a status seeking douche).

This just shows how inflated are the prices of 'luxury' watches. The value of the Rolex is in the head of the people, not in the actual watch itself.
@thijst55714 жыл бұрын
It's also in the movement, try your Steinhard in 5 years from now and look at it's second deviation per day , compare that to Rolex. Besides from the fact that materials used in the Steinhart are from a much lower qty so it probably won't make the 5 years anyway.
@SG-wj2qj4 жыл бұрын
The value of a Rolex is easily justified in the MSRP price. As with most reputable luxury watches, designing and building watches from the ground up has its cost. The testing, design and backing a quality product along with the marketing, building a brands empire. It’s much easier to copy/paste an existing design, skew it a bit then slap an off the shelf $60 movement in it and call it a day. The over inflated value in the head of the problem. I’ll give you that, when a $9000 Rolex becomes a $16,000 watch. That’s BS.

Thijs Terwiel The Sellita SW200-1 is a workhorse and trust me, it will last way longer than just 5 years.

@@SG-wj2qj This is all true. However, my new Omega Seamaster outshines the 2019 Rolex Sub in almost every way, including a superior movement, for half the price. Rolex has purposely increased the price of their product by about 20% per year since around 1986. In 1986 there was nothing to compete with a Rolex Sub. Today, with technology, there are many competitors. Rolex still looks the best, to my eye, but my Seamaster runs better than any Rolex that I've ever owned. Keep in mind that I've owned 5 Subs from 1986 to 1998 and finally walked away when I began to find Omega and Breitling pieces at half the price. It's a matter of preference and choice for sure. Rolex is a fantastic company, but so is Omega and Breitling.

Not saying they are same. All I can say, just take look yourself whether Steinhart Ocean 1 for example keeps up or not. Check some ETA2824 credits and history. You may change your perception about the movement as in doubt the watch can outlive hardly 5 years. Last thing to mention is inner antireflexive coating on the Steinhart's Ocean One saphire glass - unlike Submariner. The other fact is 316L vs 916L is not the issue - Rolex used 316L steel for many many years. Just give it a check. My 5 cents.

OMG YOU DO LISTEN AMD READ COMMENTS! LoL 😂🤣 As I said in the previous “Hot Takes Video”- Homage watches are alright to like and purchase! If you like a design and know you’ll never be able to afford the original, why should you be denied wearing that design in a homage/knockoff? (Not talking about clones) Thanks Jenni... GREAT Content!

Homage watches for me represent a future vision of who I aspire to be, what I visualise myself as 10 years down the line, sure I can't afford a Rolex Yatch Master now, but wearing a Stienheart with a similar design , layout and hand feel makes it easier for me to see how my journey is heading and also gives a mental boost just imagining how the real thing would look on my wrist. Homage watches for me are a gateway into my future, a future where I can afford the real thing, untill then it gives the high knowing that I am on the right path.

Congrats on passing the 50k sub mark. Am not surprised; i subscribed right after watching the first video of yours that i came across, and expected anybody who appreciated quality watch-related content from a smart, knowledgeable, charming and obviously enthusiastic presenter would do the same. Here's to the next 50k subs! 👍
