I have seen this subject beaten to death. I own two original Rolex, two 1960s Daytona, of which one is an original Paul Newman. So, probably a 100kUSD watch in today's market. Yet, I just purchased a Steinhart Ocean Once (and used!) and enjoy it immensely. No reason today to dish out 15k euro at once, when what many like me are seeking is to rotate watches on their wrists going for different looks every few days. Steinhart has 99% of the looks, great quality at un UNBEATABLE price. Rolex found the proper look for a manly watch - took them decades - I don't see the need to re-invent the wheel each and every time and, contrary to what you are saying, Jenni, I DO see value in copying - quality copy - such amazing design. Though I DO own Rolex as pointed above, I would never, ever buy a Submariner for 15k euro today .Thanks for the presentation - it helped me illustrate better my point where the Steinhart kicks ass

Jenni, as a metallurgist, I have to correct you here. 904L steel is not more scratch resistant compared to 316L. It has better anti-magnetic and anti-corrosion properties. 316L is actually harder than 904L. 904L steel feels shinier because of the higher amount of chromium compared to 316L but also be aware that 904L contains more nickel. So, if you're allergic to nickel, go with titanium (316L also contains nickel, though lower than 904L).

Why would Rolex wish to allay expenses? Have you ever seen Gucci, Louis Vuitton, Chanel or the likes having promotions or wishes to cut cost so as to make it more affordable? No. Why? Artificial brand prestige. Tbh these Brand all have something in common making smaller and less premium items to target groups of people that wishes to enter luxury market with a “ statement “ piece. It’s actually marketing 101 no “luxury” brand would ever reduce their price ever. During the pandemic in March, Chanel and LV reopened in China after China successfully controlled the pandemic and they thereafter increased the starting price of multiple products. It does not make sense financially, but brand prestige and “luxury” a statement piece are all things that influence people to purchase luxury items even during the pandemic to show they are well off. Humans are way more superficial than you think. So Rolex being a cheap entry watch to the world of luxury the last thing they would wish to do is lower their brand recognition/ prestige. Any non watch people would recognise Rolex as a symbol of success. Not everyone would be able to recognise grand SEIKO which makes fabulous good priced pieces. Why? Rolex brand recognition has been deeply ingrained into everyone for being reliable, no fuss and a status symbol for those who just made it in life. Everyone is willing to pay for the price it’s least of Rolex concern to sell at a lower price. To lower ones price is akin to setting up for customer thinking that promotion would be around the horizon that’s the last thing any brand would wish to do if they wish for brand prestige.

I honestly think that homage watches really are a great way for regular, everyday people to wear and have the look of something that is unattainable in reality. Not many people can go spend $10k plus on a Rolex but many can go out and get a homage that still functions beautifully and gives you that expensive, classic look of a GMT MASTER 2, Rolex Sub, or even an Omega Speedmaster. These pieces aren’t fakes they are just the reality pieces for an average Rolex or Omega or any expensive watch lover. These homages expand the watch community to not only those who have an unlimited budget but to those who have a tight one. These people still love a pretty watch and for the price and features of a homage... it just cannot be beat!

And ok, in your own world it looks the same... 😳 But in my world, it doesn’t matter if it’s the best replica in the world, it’s STILL NOT A ROLEX 😂 Doesn’t matter how hard you try, you’re still wearing a fake... It’s the same thing with the Adidas-pants we all wore in high school. There were a lot of guys wearing fakes. But we all knew who wore fakes and who wore the real deal. And wearing the real deal is just cooler, no matter how hard you try convincing yourself otherwise 👍🍾

I look at homage watches the same way I look at kit cars that were designed to be raced and probably destroyed on a race track. Would I ever take a 1965 Shelby Cobra to the race track? No, never the surviving Shelby Cobras are extremely expensive and rare. However, I would take a Factory Five Racing AC Cobra kit car to the track any day of the week and race the car like the original 65 Shelby Cobra was intended to be treated. Do I ever see myself wearing a Rolex 126710BLRO as it was originally intended to be worn as being steel Rolex Sports model? At the current prices? never. It would be a safe queen or instantly flipped to buy the Steinhart GMT and to pay off the rest of my student loans. The Steinhart GMT in this video is my Cobra kit car. I would wear it as it was meant to be worn, it would probably never leave my wrist for the foreseeable future.

Jenni, 904L steel is softer than 316L so it is actually easier to scratch than the Steinhart. 904L is more corrosion resistant. Make memories. On your death bed, are people going to remember you for the watches you had? Or the memories you made with people? Yeah, you only live once, but would you rather spend $30,000 on a watch that only you will enjoy for a short time, or spend that money travelling, helping others, or seeing friends/family, paying for their meals, going on trips with them, giving them gifts, helping the people you love in need. I've had expensive watches and homage or cheaper watches. I enjoyed the cheaper watches more because (1) I don't put a target on my back for thieves. (2) Affordables are cheaper, easier, and less stressful to service (3) High end watches are great, but they're not life changing and I wish people would stop pretending owning a $30,000 would make your life better. I had expensive watches and cheap watches and my life was exactly the same before and after, only with expensive watches I was slightly poorer and more stressed. Buy what you like, don't see watches as investments, just enjoy them, and you don't need the most expensive watch to enjoy it (unless you are a status seeking douche).

I don’t mind homage watches because everything is an homage at this point. And I think that people that hate them, hate mostly the fact that it is more difficult to see that they own a specific expensive piece. what are the Lange one , Zeitwerk, Datograph homaging? And that's just from Lange. What about the Cartier Santos, the Vacheron Overseas, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms, the Richard Mille RM-02... original designs keep coming out all the time, it's just that it takes effort and money to do them. Homages are just for brands that want to exploit a legal hole and sell their own version of another brand's design.

@@Chris-es3wf Yes, but the basic question is legal. Rolex does not own the design of the pepsi gmt. What I meant is that the watch has meaning for the owner not to people around that get fooled looking at a type of design that almost every watch brand makes! For example the classic diver watch (created by Blancpain by the way). Is it unfair to Rolex? In a certain way yes, but it is also a big advantage! Eventually everybody wants to own one of those and not one of the replicas! By the way Rolex could make 600 dollars pepsi gmt? But they don’t! Why? Because they do not need or want to! Rolex do not loses costumers with the Steinhart... They gain prestige and the ability to sell quality steel watches at the highest price possible. It adopts the characteristic angular hands known to collectors as snowflake, that appeared in the brand’s 1969 catalogue. Finally, the large winding crown, characteristic of the first generation of TUDOR divers' watches to be waterproof to 200 metres (660 ft), is also presented in this new model. Personally, I think that homage watches are very important in the watch community. There are lots of people that do their research and end up on liking certain luxury watches, while never having the budget to buy them or never intending on paying thousands of Euros on watches, because of other obligations. Not everybody can justify spending this amount of money on watches, while having to do deal with other issues in life. So while liking the design, I think it is a good solution that people can buy hommage watches to wear a time piece that has the look, but is still "affordable" by paying like e.g. 500 € on a Steinhart GMT, which is still a lot of money. And this Steinhart seems to be a real quality time piece. Thanks a lot for this comparison :)

Being "Watched"..... I love your channel because you are casual and you are not showy or flashy. You just tell it how it is. You are "real", not fake. This is a talent not many on KZbin have, but you have it. Now, as for the homage watches, I want to say this, that I saved and saved in order to buy the James Bond watch, the Omega SeaMaster Automatic in Blue and I love it -love it -love it. It was expensive, but I get many compliments and I feel differently when I wear it. It's strange how a beautiful watch will make me feel important. Someday I will pass it on to my son because he loves it too (he loves to remind me that I once said that). I love companies that put in the hard work of coming up with beautiful design ideas that are so breathtaking, innovative and durable that they become "timeless" icons and other companies want to emulate them. In my mind, it's kind of like how Hyundai emulates the BMW and Mercedes Benz in their designs. What I appreciate about companies like ROLEX and OMEGA is that they go beyond and they layout vast sums of money to sponsor hard working athletes, enormous sporting events, or putting on fund raIsing productions for the poor and needy and that is something you will rarely see the homage companies do. At the same time, I understand that there are many people who cannot afford a beautiful ROLEX or Patek Philleppe. And that is why I support the idea of homage watch manufacturers, as long as they do not attempt to copy every detail and make fakes. I would love to be the winner of your contest and go on watching your KZbin videos and spread the word to all my friends who also love watches (which is all of them). Thank you for the opportunity. I look at them pretty close to how you describe as a "trial" watch before blowing away thousands on a real deal. Another aspect for me is that for about one grand I can get myself a small selection of pretty decent homage watches (consider I can spend a long time to do research on what is the best brand for the money, which often the answer is San Martin), to mix it up and suit my mood better. Another nice thing about them is that you don't have to be so afraid of them, but at the same time you do learn to subconsciously learn to be weary of it being there (like for instance when doing some really dirty or rough work, or just in general not bang your left wrist on any metal surface). And on a different note, I am a huge fan of watches, and I constantly dream of Omega, Rolex, Patek, etc, I would not actually purchase one at this point in my life simply because it wouldn't pair well with my income or savings. Instead I would like to have a small carefully selected collection with a mix of everything from Rolex homages to more original designs from Timex, Citizen, Seiko, etc that are in the same pricerange. And this is also why I think the Bulova Lunar Pilot is a blessing for someone like me, because even though I could just drain a huge sum of my savings on a Speedmaster, this Bulova is a good option, and I don't even feel like it's a cheap replacement of a Speedmaster, rather a watch with it's own history, it's own unique design, and frankly a good looking piece. The big, black dial does in my eyes reminds me of the dark emptiness of space, and it even makes me feel lonely when looking at it, and I like that feeling because I think that's how the astronauts would have felt it too when being alone and so mindblowingly far from the rest of the human race. And on a last point here about homage watches. And this is more a question based around a critical observation: Why would a $250 Chinese Daytona replica be considered a homage, whilst something like Tag Heuer Autavia is not? I have seen homages of other popular watches which also have done several huge design choices that differ them from their "original", just as TH has done, but they are still considered homage watches? Is it simply because of the different price and movement of the Tag that makes them not a homage?

Correct Comment to 3:08 in this video. 904L is softer and scratches significantly easier than 316L. 316L contains more carbon and does not contain the soft alloy copper. 316L is the superior metal for watches when it comes to hardness. 904L is more resistant to corrosions (water, sweat etc ....) but is softer and hence you need to get it polished more often :) 316 L Stteel: 0.03 Kohlenstoffanteil (Carbon), 0% Kupfer (Cooper) 904 L Steel: 0.02 Kohlenstoffanteil (Carbon), 1-2% Kupfer (Cooper) :)

As I wrote in your post you did about homages this watche, it is for people that LOVE the world of watches and the excellent design of rolex but do not have the funds to buy the dream watch in a reasonable time. I am a medical school student and it will be many years studying and loans payment before I will be able to buy myself a gmt master 2. Homage watches are for us, the people that can not buy a nice watch knowing they have a 3 years of loans to pay for it. Regards

There are iconic designs at every price point. You're just trying to justify buying a blatant poser watch. Sad. Just wait until you can afford it or simply appreciate it from afar. It'll make the purchase that much more meaningful when you do. Homage watches are for fake people. God help our medical system if this is the best we have....

@@Chris-es3wf Wow, I am not sad, I happily wear my Steinhart every day. What is sad is that you have such a negative view of your fellow watch lovers, but watch snobbery is a common problem today. I own Seikos and such as well but they do not have the rolex look I love. I and a good portion of the comments would like if you could take your condescending attitude some were else.

Nothing wrong with homage watches in my opinion, and certainly in my experience buying a good quality homage watch has helped provide that certain look and feel of a desirable mechanical watch while waiting for an opportunity to obtain the original; if it's nicely made go for it!

I cannot afford the Rolex gmt and I’m not entirely sold on the Tudor gmt but this watch is starting to check off some boxes with me. The more I discover about the Steinhart quality the more I am liking the price.

Thank you so much for comparing these two watches. They are both fantastic. Although I can afford the Rolex, I just can’t justify spending that much money on a watch. The Steinhart appears to be a great choice for most people.

A copy is a watch that could hypothetically be passed off as the original, anything else is a homage. I own a Steinhart Vintage Red, and it's superb

That is the exact and very best difference between homage and copy to this day - at least for me. On the other hand - if I put it this way - is PLIMA t-shirt an homage to well known brand PUMA? Just caught myself in the loop haha : ))))

That batman t-shirt threw me off, I was expecting a GMT-Master II, Batman edition.

Congrats on passing the 50k sub mark. Am not surprised; i subscribed right after watching the first video of yours that i came across, and expected anybody who appreciated quality watch-related content from a smart, knowledgeable, charming and obviously enthusiastic presenter would do the same. Here's to the next 50k subs! 👍

Personally I love what Steinhart produce. I have the Ocean One 500 Titanium and adore it. I also have the Tudor Black Bay 58 and did a quick comparison between the two. Great video by the way!

I bought a Steinhart gmt about 8 months ago and although I have enjoyed it I can't say it has captured my heart. I was drawn to it originally because of its obvious resemblance to the Rolex but certainly didn't want a copy. The Steinhart quality is topnotch especially for the price but at the end of the day it is not the watch I really want. I won't be selling it but I suspect it will be the one and only homage watch in my collection. Good work with your views and reviews and keep it up!

In the world of watches, "homage" has come to mean "copy" when it more accurately describes something that is a "tribute." If taken this way, an "homage" watch is simply a way of saying "wow, I love that Rolex, and everything it represents, and it's styling is spot on, but I really can't afford one, but would like to show my appreciation for the original" and so homage watches have a valid place. I would proudly wear a Steinhart homage watch as the Steinhart itself is a pretty amazing piece. Would I prefer the Rolex? You know, I'm not sure I would. I know the details are more refined, and the workmanship beyond reproach, but I use my stuff hard, and I would feel guilty exposing a Rolex to my world. But I'd do my best to wear a Steinhart out. I don't mean I would abuse it, but I wouldn't be afraid to wear it. I'd be afraid to wear a Rolex.

The close-up of the GMT hand of the Rolex irritates me at this price point 🤔. The Steinhart is btw also available with a 42mm case diameter. Kind regards from Germany, Frank
