So I played Lara's Home and butler was SCARY! XD It was my first 3D game. AND WE DIDN'T HAVE THE MEMORY CARD AT FIRST. I have NO IDEA how we got past Temple of Xian or Floating Islands without outside help or walkthroughs. But dad took pride in doing first 5 TR games without guides. These weren't the parts we got stuck the most, bike in TR4 is. And setting ropes on fire. With the torch. TR2 had its share of moon logic puzzles though.

Love the writing, hilarious. Am I the only person who actually loved the underwater levels in the upside down sunken ship, even at 12 years old? Seems to be the point most people agree on whether they're old or new to the game. And at those times games were not meant to be rushed through like you do today. That's WHY they gave us free saves. You were meant to go slow and carefully, at least on the first play through. Oh and as for 17:59 , I always thought it was glass.

I'm late to this party, but The Floating Jade Islands to me actually makes a lot of sense if you know the significance of jade and what it represents to the Chinese people and its folklore and with the combination of it in the game, this is a theory I came up with a few years back about it: The Floating Islands is a peculiar location because it makes absolutely no sense in that, an entire world of floating jade islands exists inside a Temple built inside the Great Wall. Core Design obviously took some creative liberties and ambition to build this otherworldly level. It really paid off though because it's certainly one of my top levels in the game. Anyways, my theory on the Floating Islands is that the level takes place in a mysterious realm (void) that transcends time and space. Inside this void is a castle made of jade, and inside this jade castle is the Dragon's Lair, where the spirit of the dragon resides. The Dagger of Xian is a medium that connects the spirit of the dragon with the body of the wielder. In order to buy time to fully bond with the host (Marco Bartoli), and to prevent Lara from impeding his resurrection, the dragon distorted his realm to delay her. He allowed Bartoli's body and henchmen to travel across the jade bridge to the Dragon's Lair and afterwards broke the bridge and scattered the remnants throughout the realm so Lara couldn't get across. However, this is Lara Croft we're talking about. She managed to successfully navigate the "floating islands," defeat the dragon's army, and then snuck inside the lair through a back door. In the next level, when she killed the dragon, she also killed the source of the realm's power, thus the entire realm collapsed on itself and Lara was thrown out of it and back into the human realm.

Good effort on these TR vids, man! I love all of Core's TR games, but if I had to pick one thing that sucks it would be the reliance on darkness to set the mood. I get they were trying to show off their lighting system, but from TR2-4 (and sometimes 5 & 6) the levels are just too dark. Also, one thing you didn't mention in this video is Nathan McCree reprising his role with the music. He did an utterly fantastic job, especially with that Venice track. Damn that's a classic.

You just need to destoy the mines like you did, go and press the switch but instead of leaving on the 2nd bote through the mini ramp like you are supposed to (triggering the countdown), just take a dive and swim through the trap door and the doors at the end of the level will remain opened indefinitely. Man, I forgot just how brutal this game was! I remember it as being my favorite and it was the last one I actually completed back in the day. My uncle actually joined me and we took turns which was a lot of fun. I distinctly remember him seeing me play the first one and commenting how it'd be nice if you didn't have to be stuck inside tombs all the time, and upon seeing it's sequel offering outdoor levels he immediately become interested. It's crazy how conditioned we were to the difficulty back then! However difficult it might have gotten there was a deep curiosity of what might come next that served as motivation to keep playing. The graphics, environments, voice acting, and narrative were unlike anything else and that really fuels nostalgia. These videos are so good and I'm excited as hell to see the next one! This was my first ever video game and I just took its difficulty as red. Mostly I buggered about in Lara’s Home and my dad’s Barkhang Monastery save games while beating up to Diving Area on my own, but the difficulty and bugs my disk copy had in pre XP versions of Windows that caused beating Venice or Offshore Rig (it varied) to crash the game to desktop made it impossible to beat it myself until spring 2007 after I had seen Dad beat TR1-4 not counting TR2 but seeing him reach both cyborgs in TR5 and then beat TR3 myself in 2004 or so followed by Lost Artefact & Legend in 2006. Autumn 2007 was also when I finally beat Angel of Darkness too after being stuck on Le Serpent Rouge for so long as I forgot Lara could climb ladders/walls around corners. I personally love the offshore levels especially how creepy they and the pitch black ocean are, as well as the first two Tibet levels and all of China. Like Duke Nukem 3D, Tomb Raider is best when it recreates real world locations in this janky engine with actual tombs and rural places being the reward for doing so, which all remaining Core games except Chronicles also did. I’m glad I’m not the only person who is reminded of Xen by Floating Islands in terms of appearance.

I never got to play the first Tomb Raider when I was young, so I am very used to TR2&3. Lately I have been on a Tomb Raider spree and finally trying the first one, boy does it feel boring in comparison to the brutality of TR2. I actually love that medi packs are more scarce in TR2, because in TR1 it feels like you barely get any guns or ammo, but swim in medi packs - TR2 on the other hand gives you a much bigger selection of guns, a lot of ammo (as long as you complete secrets you won't really run out of anything), so choosing the right weapon for the right situation makes for a massive part of the fun for me.

I actually beat Tomb Raider II before I beat the original. It’s my second favorite installment of the PS1 Core games and the one I’ve probably played the most.

Never thought I'd find a great channel because I got curious to see whether there were reviews of the classic Tomb Raider games or not. Your reviews are hilarious and spot on. I basically agree with all the comments and critiques here. Great job!

I love how locking Winston in the freezer was the done thing globally, in a time when the internet wasn't easily accessible.

The demo video for Tibetan Foothills was where I first learned about snowspeeders and this one’s awesome music but I only played it myself in 2007 when I got there myself despite being more familiar with the monastery. (Dad’s original save games weren’t for the snowspeeder level) I found it surprisingly easy to control, minus one particularly annoying jump on the return journey from the frozen pond with the key (not the the crevasse with the two ramps and leopards) and the pit with secret 3 you’re forced to jump with the heavy black snowspeeders with guns. That said, it’s not as good to control as the Quad Bike in TR3 even though crashing it in water and not dying unlike TR3 is a blessing. The only thing I really hated about the snowspeeder is that it keeps breaking flow to force you to solve a boring puzzle just to open the way ahead. TR3 only did this once with the River Ganges (unless you took the wrong path or were hunting for secrets) and the Antarctica motor raft’s main one was optional (secret 2). TR2 does it every kilometre of both snowspeeder sequences not counting secrets. It was fucking terrible when Half Life 1, Half Life 2 & Half Life 2 Episode 2 did it and it’s terrible when Tomb Raider does it. TR4 makes the same mistake with its jeep unless you exploit physics & the enemy jeep AI to glitch through the closing gate and Cairo does it constantly, not helped by maze-like level design, poor bike controls compared to both the Quad and the snowmobile and the turbo mode needs to be unlocked first. Thankfully Legend learned from its mistake even though you only got to use 2 types of bike and a forklift. Same with Underworld, which only had the bike.

Found a couple description typos. 2.02 instead of 2:02, 14:36 has an extra ":" and it says 38:18 instead of 30:18.

This was one of the hardest games I’ve ever played. When I was a kid, I never played the first one before and I was totally unprepared for how hard it was. I could never get past the first level no matter how many times I tried. I can’t imagine getting through this now without a guide. I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought it was hard.

I’ll say the original is.. this game turned into a 3rd person shooter and practically didn’t have tombs.. the original did a great job eat creating great tombs/caves/temples to explore through.

The dinosaurs were the thing that brought me and my dad closer together. It was then that he knew I was old enough to understand what was actually going on in the game (I wasborn 1996, but it released later and he played it for as long as I can remember). One day I just asked him why he never climbed down into the abyss and took the slide instead - every time. It was the first time he had even seen that there was a way to get down there xD We were SHOCKED! when the T-Rexes turned up :'D understandably. But that was the first time I found a secret in an adult game when I was still basically a toddler :'D My mom didn't like me watching him play, bc he was a huge fan of horror games - but joke's on her, because I played them myself years later :) I also never really developed nightmares or any fears about it, so it was fine, really So thanks for making this video :) I hated the later swimming levels with the sharks though ^^'

YES I agree with the sewer level thing. The underwater levels really pull the middle part of the game down for me.

Again, very fair and balanced review (don't why I'm giving my opinions out of order but, it is what it is). This was the first Tomb Raider game I played on my own once I was old enough. Luckily I'd watched my brother and cousins play these a ton of times before then, so I already knew how to play going in, controls and gameplay wise. Funnily enough I didn't actually beat this game (and the first one) until pretty recently (still working on the third), by which I mean not just getting through all the levels alive (I salute you those who don't use medpacks), but also getting all the secrets, being the completionist I am. That said, this game is particularly special to me for the reason stated above. And while I do get some of the issues people have with it (like the more urban environments, killing more people than animals, and the undersea levels), I felt like there was a decent enough balance, especially considering the time crunch this game was made in. The undersea levels are actually my favorites, though that may be because of the haunting, atmospheric setting of the sunken Titanic-esque ship. Yes, they were enormous and I totally get how daunting people might've found them at first, but for me personally I guess I just like being presented with level-sized puzzles 'cause it feels SO good when I do solve them! That, and Lara's arsenal here is probably my favorite of any game in the series, especially the grenade launcher! I still laugh whenever I use it! That and the rapidfire uzis! And I thought it was really cool to have an epilogue level at Lara's house after you get the Dagger (Though my favorite version of Lara's house will always be the one in 3. I want that house!!!).
