I still remember being young, watching my sister play this with my dad sitting reading a magazine on the sofa; only for him to see the Lost Valley and say "Wouldn't it be funny if a T-Rex came out..." Cue Lara backflipping constantly firing her pistols, me screaming and my sister yelling at my dad "take it back! take it back!" as if that would despawn the toothy-boi

The Tomb Raider theme always gives me such intense emotional nostalgia, the first TR game I ever played was Chronicles when I was 8 and my sister 10, we were so late to my grandma's house on Christmas day because my mum couldn't get us off the PC 😂these vids have made me determined, as a 28 year old woman, to finally finish TR2, because what else am I gonna do in quarantine? Can't wait for your reviews of the later games, this has been such a sweet nostalgia trip 😊

I still remember me and my sister watching my father play this for the first time, as we had just got the playstation that Christmas. He got to St Francis Folly and accidentally fell from the very top of the tall room to the bottom. This caused Lara to scream before becoming a clump of meat on the floor. Me and my sister were in tears of laughter. I have no idea why, but we had just never seen a character have that kind of reaction in a game before, it was hilarious. TR 1 is a masterpiece, it may have aged poorly for the people who didnt play it back in the day, but the atmosphere and level of freedom will never be matched. Not even by the sequels.

I don't remember what she says in this one (which I play fairly often), but I remember "welcome to my humble abode. Feel free to take a look around" from the TR3 manor, which I haven't heard in probably 20 years.

21:29 Those aren’t actually fireballs: they’re Molotov cocktails made of meat. According to Toby Gard, the Atlanteans are throwing pieces of themselves and those are chunks or sacks of flesh that catch fire/explode when they burst. I think the bones inside must be made of caesium or something and they ignite when exposed to air, which also explains why the mutants explode when they die: Lara shoots them enough to expose their caesium skeletons. The dart things that the crawling and winged ones spit are bone chips, possibly from their ribcages. Since the game’s graphics aren’t as high quality as TR3, TRAOD or Core’s Anniversary Edition, it’s easy to mistake the meat and bone textures for a low res fireball and their explosions don’t help. These guys care about their body parts less than the zombies in Quake 1.

They DO look like bones, especially the white chips! This makes me recall all the late 90s/early 2000s body horror in games from Legacy of Kain and Soul Blade to Teknos from Unholy War. There was a lot of this aesthetic, hands tuned into blades or cannons.

That was really well made, the commentary was nice for those who know the game and pretty descriptive for those who don't (I was wondering about you completely skipping the fact that Natla ruled the Atlantis, but the way you just mentioned it as "by the way" later was probably funnier than if you said so outright). Also speaking about this as if the viewers had no previous knowledge of it really emphasized some of the weird or frustrating stuff. I'm just... too used to the way classic TR is. :D Also while your commentary was fair and never boring... the best part is definitely the little segment with the daily life of Atlanteans. :D I didn't expect you actually put this as a part of the video but it was brilliant! Well, I hope you survived that explosion at the end because I'm looking forward to TR2. :)

I was recently on a TR marathon that I do ever so often going from TR 1 all the way to Underworld (The new trilogy has only been completed once each and I've no desire to replay them again). With the marathon over I still have the craving for the original trilogy so I decided to find a retrospective review of the games in video format (too soon to replay the games yet again) and I accidentally stumbled on this channel. I see you covered the original trilogy and so far the first part of the fourth game. Gonna go make some popcorn and enjoy this goodness :D

Truth be told, I actually have the Sega Saturn version of the Original Tomb Raider. I'm surprised you didn't mention that Tomb Raider was originally released on the Sega Saturn; but the problem this presented was the console itself entirely-the botched launch from E3 1995 (the VERY FIRST E3 mind you), how DIFFICULT it was to program for, "RPGs would not work in the US", and the most infamous of them all, "Saturn was not our future."-Bernard Stolar. As a result, when Eidos (the parent company of not just Core Design, but ALSO Crystal Dynamics-the same people responsible for not just the Gex franchise, but soon adopters of Tomb Raider after Core shut down from the failure of Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness mind you) took a look at this game, one of them told the game's creator: "This is a great game you have going on, but you've GOT to release it on the PlayStation! Saturn isn't really selling many units, so you've GOT to outsource it to other consoles!" And what a dang shame too, because the guy who made THIS game LOVED Sega!
@SteveOfWarr
@SteveOfWarr 6 жыл бұрын
I've not ever owned or played the Sega Saturn version of this game before so I didn't feel confident enough to talk about that in this video, so stuck with the version I played on PS1. I've actually spoked to Adrian Smith from Core Design about their time with Sega and switching from the Saturn to the PlayStation. It was a really interesting chat, and you'll get to see that at some point in the future 😊

The International version of Saturn TR1 did fix the issues of the original Saturn version for PAL regions but I don’t have one yet, just my PAL one. Tomb Raider 4+5 also came out for Dreamcast which I also have, but sadly TR3 didn’t nor did TRAOD come out on Dreamcast or original Xbox when it would have been cool to see on them. Speaking of Saturn TR1, I love the water ripples that game has in all regions though it’s hard to see them at first, especially as they don’t follow the water textures like when TR3 did it.

Well done on your retrospective Steve! I'm glad we have people keeping the classics going for so long to this day, mainly thanks to dedicated fans, Tomb Raider Forums, Tomb Raider Level Editor and even Core Design have made a return to some events. The best Tomb Raider games were 1 through 5. It took a lot of practice and a lot of your own skill to master the games controls since it solely relies on you performing everything yourself while judging distances properly which makes it more realistic as said in the video which is why I prefer these due to the modern ones now having mostly quick time events to perform complex actions and having Lara behave like a magnet that attracts towards ledges when you jump at random. Plus you did not need to buy endless DLC for a full experience, the classics were just a single game with good story, gameplay, design and character and the bonus levels on PC were free, except Lost Artifact which was big enough to be another full game itself but it was reasonably priced. I hate to say it but how Tomb Raider is being made now with Square Enix, it's lost touch with what Lara was though I know its a reboot but it's more for fancy graphics than decent gameplay and adventure nowadays and you don't get the entire experience just buying the game due to the excessive DLC to go with it. I'm 26 so I have been a fan for some time and know newer games well but I can quite happily replay the classics any day on Playstation or PC without needing to judge graphics since I know it delivers a much more rewarding experience and atmosphere since it was made with love for the franchise which is why I dedicate my KZbin Channel to classic Tomb Raider walkthroughs.

A fantastic retrospective; it brings me so much joy to see content creators on YT making videos on the Classic TR series. I got the first game for my 16th birthday, back in 1996, and fell in love with both the game and Lara. I even remember thinking the graphics were really good (and they were, by mid-90s standards!) Anyway, I played the game for the first time in literal decades while self-isolating and I still love it and it makes me insanely happy to know there are others out there who also still love these old games.

Fantastic review. Very entertaining! :-D I LOVED Tomb Raider and played it back when I was thirteen. As a girl, I found Lara Croft fascinating as a character and saw her as aspirational: The beauty, the fitness, the brilliant mind, the adventurous lifestyle, and, of course, that friggin' manor! O_O She was like a blend of Indiana Jones (the archaeology), James Bond (the weaponry), and Batman (the billionaire status). My teenage brain was no match for such a cool combination. Edit: I am of course aware now of just how ludicriously sexualised she was and am very glad her later designs present her respectfully).
@ghihbgyu
@ghihbgyu 4 жыл бұрын
One thing I'll say about her being sexualized is that she doesn't seem very seductive in the game unlike many other characters in films and games I could point out. To me she just seems to be a cool person who just so happens to have a killer body and likes to wear shorts... She isn't ACTING like a sex doll which makes her stand out to me. Edit: She does however seem more and more sexualized with every installment, culminating in the Crystal Dynamics series.
@codym348
@codym348 3 жыл бұрын
Fun fact: she was conceived as a total ripoff of Indiana Jones. Like, TOTAL ripoff. Like his identical twin. But then they realized that'd be a good way to get sued, so they made him a her, and she wasn't supposed to be a sex symbol. Her, uh, generous proportions were originally just to make it clear that she was a she, because graphics just weren't that good and they couldn't make her ponytail physics work (which is why she doesn't have one in this game). She wasn't designed to be sexualized, at least at first. Looking at the inside flap of the TR4 PC case, obviously that changed over time.

Amazing video! I'm so happy someone finally did a Tomb Raider retrospective. Keep up the good work and I really hope that we'll see next part about Last Revelation sooner or later. Till then I'm gonna watch the second and third part of your series. Thank you so much for it and don't stop making it!

Yes Steve back at it again with the amazing vids. The effort you put in really paid off man, loved it! I've only played a little bit of Tomb Raider and I was really young so most of the stuff about this game I either don't remember or it went over my head. Anyways great video man, might have to revisit this game at some point!

This review was great to watch. I appreciate that you went through the entire order of the game’s levels. I tried to play this on Steam a few times but it’s always too hard and frustrating for me how often I can get stuck, lost, or dying over and over again. It’s definitely a very important and amazing game on the PS. I guess I’m too spoiled now to play games this difficult. I appreciate going through it through with your video.

As a huge fan of all things Tomb Raider (except the 2012 reboot and everything since) watching this retrospective series has been great. I have watched all of the Core Design series of retrospectives and look forward to the legend retrospective. You sir. Have earned a sub!

Wow - this is so fantastic. Tomb Raider was the game that got me into gaming - I re-play the originals every couple of years, and after watching this I can't wait to head back to Peru again :) T-Rexes, pulsating veiny Atlantean corridors, the amazing soundtrack and Lara's dubious grunts - you name checked all the best bits. Can't wait to see the rest of the videos - TR2 and Underworld are my favourites.

I must've rewatched all of your TR retrospectives a dozen times and I never get tired of them. Also, in terms of the bug that happened at 25:59, where the Lara Doppelganger "dies". She isn't actually dead, clearly. More so just glitched in a death animation. A lot of the time this can be fixed by going to the slope that you slid down on to get into the Doppelganger room, jump up the slope and slide back down as if you were just entering that room for the first time, and you may find that Doppelganger Lara has reset to her original spot. She's only meant to traverse the room she's in, so by going out of bounds technically, it'll reset her. Just a little tip from someone who has an extreme addiction to these games LOL.

I’ve only ever played the Tomb Raider definitive edition on PS4. And honestly it was a bit hard to enjoy. I felt the story was all over the place. The only thing I enjoyed was the fighting mechanics. The fact the you can go quiet or loud always makes me happy, I like games that make you stop and concentrate on how you wanna play. Awesome video lad. Can’t wait for the next video.

I like the effort you put in to present both the positives and negatives in fair (and funny!) ways. It's not a perfect game (there's no such thing) but darn it if it's not one of the best ever! Some of my favorite memories are watching my brother and cousins play these games for HOURS! Even when I was 4-5 years old, Lara was (and still is!) my heroine! The environments as well were just enthralling. I remember being bizarrely fascinated particularly by St. Francis Folly and Atlantis. As batsh*t insane as the later levels are, you gotta give props for creativity! And of course…ugh, the music!!! I always thought of the Atlanteans as living WMDs (That's what Natla created them to be anyway), and that was why they exploded.

I remembered playing the demos for Tomb Raider 1 to 4 when I was young but never beating the whole games. Even then there were memorable things about them. I beat some of the Crystal Dynamic games, but they didn't have the same feeling. Finally I sat down and finished the first one, and I have to say it is now in my top 10 favorite games. As I'm older it's very hard for me to keep my attention span and interest in video games as I used to be. So something has to be really fun and mentally stimulating for me to not be bored quickly. I played it using the TombATI modification with HD textures so the game look really good, some settings are just majestic. There is a very real sense of depth in this game. Even though I haven't beat 2-4, I can see why some people think the first one is best, it has a great sense of isolation and is entirely dedicated to exploring mysterious settings rather than dealing with combat in urban environments which probably doesn't work as well for this style of game.
