Vedic Math has a faster method using powers of 10. to square 96 just minus the difference from 100 ( 96-4 =92) then append 4 squared = 16, Ans 9216. Same for 993. Using 1000 as base. Diff from 1000 = 7 993 _ 7 = 986 first part of answer. 7 x 7 = 49. Since base1000 has 3 zeros, second part must have 3 digits. So add 0 before 49 = 049. Combine both parts - 986049.
