I like to think the Ulcerated Tree Spirits serve the function of physically and spiritually devouring those who undertook Erdtree burial, therefore returning the body and spirit to the Erdtree.
@justinriley4063 Жыл бұрын
That makes sense and it could mean that the Tree Avatars are on ground level to smash the pots into the ground where the "worm" eats it. The tree spirit is nowhere to be seen at the volcano minor erdtree so the worm shows up instead

Just want to mention that there are other types of ulcers besides peptic ulcers. With the Lands Between being ruled by an "Eternal" deity and being held in stasis, I tend to think of bedsores more than anything lol. But given that there's rot, deathblight, those who live in death etc wandering around, and Marika has been stabbed through her womb, I'd bet they'd all cause various degrees of soul-circulatory insufficiency and wreak havoc on the Erdtree's health. The types of ulcers include ischemic, mouth, peptic, venous, and genital.

@beniron5807 Жыл бұрын
My very first thought when seeing the Elden Beast and its movements (and the many pillars or “trees” he summoned ) was. Holy shit, I found the mama! My thought was the Greater Will had just basically set up a farm where human souls are the livestock that feeds off him, his envoy the Elden Beast, and the spirits who are were still infants. At least this was the thought a long time ago. I still think these spirits are more or less clones or offspring of the Elden Beast but they were not planned. They seeds they dropped suggest the tree itself released them in anticipation of its demise. I think this is referencing the First Burning of the Erdtree which I also believe was around the time Marika removed the Rune of Death and thus prevented them from feeding off the spirits like they normally did. I mean if you ruled over we a cycle that you knew would eventually result in your spirit being devoured would you not attempt to I don’t know, live eternally?

I remember hearing someone mentioning possibly seeing regular tree spirits in the DLC. If the theme is going back in time, that would make sense. This is probably a stretch, but it would also be cool to see the regular Caelid Wilds before it got rotted.

I never fully understood all the complaints about how often we see these guys. Yes, there's quite a few of them, but they're only considered "boss fights" in the early game. Later on, when they can found in the open world, they make for pretty unique and fun fights. I think the game was so incredible that we didn't have much to complain about, so we resorted to having a problem with reused enemies (something most other games do a lot worse than ER).

Glad to see you're still covering Elden Ring with the same quality. That was a great theory, the only thing i'm on the edge about is godwyn's involvement, the model of the ulc tree spirit doesn't really show what you'd usually see on stuff infected by deathroot. Definitely looks like it's infected by some parasite tho. (It looks to me like it's many legs have been "grafted" on it, also I think the "ulcerated" part is a reference to their fire breath.)
@AegisKHAOS Жыл бұрын
I love the design of these ulcerated tree spirits and the way they move. When it came to theories, I only ever got as far as they have something to do with the erdtree (because 'tree spirits'), and they must be corrupted. Beyond that, I was either too busy fighting one, or too busy avoiding one. :p They are quite the tough fight for an absolute beginner. I was surprised I managed to kill the one in Stormveil on my first try. Truth be told, I didn't even expect that thing down there at all, yet somehow still did it with duel wielding uchis. :p

When I first encountered one of these in Mt. Gelmir and killed it I started to think that I did something bad. That one hits you with sacred attacks and it came from the tree so I thought that I accidently killed the tree and that may have locked me out of an ending or something lmao.
@alexandermorgan5958 Жыл бұрын
Hey, thanks for taking my suggestion! I never thought Godwyn or the Elden Beast had anything to do with them. It always goes deeper if you look hard enough. The ulcers themselves are reminiscent of the appearance of the two fingers. It's difficult to believe that that's a coincidence but I'm not sure what to make of it.
@xryeau_1760 Жыл бұрын
I have three things to say about ulcerated tree spirits: 1: I like their design because they're a rehash of the pus of man enemies from DS3, which may sound derogatory but I appreciate this because Fromsoftware wanted to do more with the enemy, and used Elden Ring as their opportunity. Fighting them can be annoying though and I'm not without grievances for either of those two enemy types, but I like them from a design perspective 2: If they have a common source with the erdtree avatars, then my biggest question would beg why the tree spirits are serpentine or fish-like while the avatars are much more humanoid 3: People complaining about (x) enemy being reused isn't a unique complaint, Elden Ring reuses most of their enemies throughout multiple areas because every area in the game has a common connection (In this case the Erdtree, the influence of which is spread across the entire Lands Between, and even beyond that given certain item descriptions indicate there are even factions outside the Lands Between who worship the Erdtree and our Tarnished was revived by grace from outside the Lands Between before the start of the game too) I don't really think it makes any sort of logical sense to point towards one enemy type in particular as the biggest culprit of being a reused asset when that just isn't true and with a map as large as Elden Ring's you should expect repeat encounters to happen
@HeevaEgo Жыл бұрын
I only see people arguing about “reused” enemies with ones they don’t particularly like… Like how everybody loves the ‘Knight-like’ enemies, so they don’t mind the “reuse” of them in Leyndell… But how everybody hates Ulcerated Spirits, so the complain about “reused” assets. Funny thing is, other Open world game does “Reused” enemies much worse than Elden ring (including masterpieces like Botw and Witcher 3) The complaint stems from a very illogical ideology lmao😭

That’s my thought too. I love the tree spirits. I spent 45 minutes on my first play through killing the very first one you can find in the tomb we wake up in. 2 hits would kill me and I had almost no heals so I learned how to fight the then super early. I loved dodging them perfectly and wiping the floor with my them. It reminded me of the first one I struggled against so hard.

Y’know these creatures honestly remind me of those snake like creatures with two arms that are found in norse mythology. They are located at the base of the world trees roots. Their purpose is to gnaw at the roots and clear out stuff for the new roots and sprouts to grow. Just an interesting connection given the root like appearance of these guys. And the elden beast being the connecting factor between them heavily mirrors the mother serpent of those norse snakes as well.

The elden beast is the spirit of the erdtree. That and the similar moves points to them being lesser elden beasts. Similar how we find Astels in different stages of development. That points to the influence of order being more of an outer god and probably just an aspect of the greater will.

I'm thinking that the Tree Spirits are a more primal version of Erdtree Avatars, they could have came from The Crucible, then, when they got corrupted by deathblight, rot, or whathave you, became the sick Tree Spirits we encounter in game. Good thing WE kill the Elden Beast, before IT gets corrupted by Deathblight or Rot! Just imagine a Rot or Deathblight Elden Beast, holy FRICK! I just had a thought, in the upcoming DLC, since Miquella's Haligtree was so far along, before he was stolen by Mohg and Malenia was placed at the foot of it, could we have to fight a Rot, Deathblight, or a Blood version of a Elden Beast? Miquella has been at least partially corrupted by Mohg, he was very close to Godwyn the Golden, so that's how Deathblight can enter into it, and his Haligtree has been gutted by Rot, so, do you think that's possible? A Corrupted Elden Beast-type creature, could be terrifying!
@British_Rogue Жыл бұрын
Avatars _(based purely on their name)_ would be what the Minor Erdtrees use to protect themselves with. Spirits, given that they are Ulcerated, must be souls unable to access the nearby Minor Erdtree. And the Minor Erdtree itself is also in someway deformed or Ulcerated, therefore meaning it is unable to protect itself. Hence, the reason why Spirits and Avatars aren't seen together. I'd imagine the Japanese names for each of them would shed further light on the matter.
@Conzort_1 Жыл бұрын
*Tinfoil hats please!* In regards to Stormveil: it's also possible that the ulcerated spirit manifested from the Visage down there. It's the only Visage of it's size and stature. Probably has stronger "impact" on its environment than it let's off to seem. It's directly connected to the root system, as the godwyn story arch suggests. With those resources, it's possible that the ulcerated tree spirit came from the Visage. Which would be epic. One could then say the visage is a sort of erdtree in nature, due to how much it has grown.

There all a few bosses that get repeated. One of the best ones are the Death Bird‘s because it gets upgraded with it’s moveset and appearance. First one you one counter is like a beast but by the end it’s like your fighting a hovering Macross jet. UTS never really changes it’s game plan. Holy and Rot variations. The last two fights with UTS’s are pretty intense though. The Haligtree one is a Rot one that’s on an a miniature Rot Swamp platform that you can easily get swatted off of. Then there’s the triplets in the Ashen Capital. Just utter chaos there. Still they don’t change the moveset. If you’ve killed them all by then it pretty much a stroll in the park fighting them.

This was a good lore dive. To me this makes so much sense! I also agree on your speculation. The first time I saw the spirit in Mt gelmir, i thought this must be a version of the tree avatar as the tree looks dead. I imagine after the tree spirits traveled through the roots and consumed eardtree burials, they head back up to the branches and latch on and give the nutrients. After the tree recycles the souls they fill up the (still latched on) tree spirits with the reincarnated bodies. Maybe they even looked like full fruits. Possibly the massive ancient giants ate the fruit before they were extinct if you look at Zullies vid they are normal size compared to the tree, too big to eat the tiny creatures exept the fruit form

Here's a possibility: The erdtree avatars are to the ulcerated tree spirits, what Radagon is to the elden beast. Perhaps Radagon was born when Marika imbibed the elden ring. Radagon is the avatar of the elden beast and therefore depends on its survival for his own existence. Created to be the gold to Marika's Numen silver like the case of the brothers D.

I think the Ulcerated Tree Spirits are also sort of loosely based on the Pus of Man from Dark Souls 3. They literally have the same fat worm like neck with a monstrous maw and extremely erratic flailing attacks while emitting a terrible shriek. Though they took out the one glaring weakness that was in the Pus of Man which was it's extreme weakness to fire. The Ulcerated Tree Spirit will not stun and cry in pain when exposed to fire lol. No it just keeps on screaming and flailing.

I'm curious about why the game uses the upgraded Death-rite Bird so early in the Academy Gate Town and in South-east Caelid, when it still has the easier version as late as the Capital Outskirts. I'd say the reuse complaint is a function of the fight being annoying. I'm perfectly happy to fight fourteen Crucible Knights plus their duo throughout the game because I find the experience quite fun, and within those the axe and tree variants are quite different, plus the axe ones get three different phase 2 attacks to choose from. How the tree spirit's texture undulates is part of what takes down the fight. They're already a bit too hard to read, and that element simply piles on more distraction. Plus the catacomb arenas are just a bit too tiny for them; the ones in the open world work a lot better. On my RL1 run they've gotten more readable to me over time, and the Ash of War "Flaming Strike" is a huge help, although I still dread the one in Elphael and I don't know if I'll even bother killing the ones in Ashen Capital. And as another comment said, they never change their game plan, the first one you might see in Limgrave will be exactly the same as the last one you see in Ashen Capital. Even the Erdtree Avatar in Mountantops does the split into two (and that should've been the last one imo, would've been a great sendoff for the boss. Then make a Haligtree Avatar out of the Taurus Demon for the one in Snowfield and two in Elphael).

I have an idea that the tree spirits weren’t intended. What if they are a side effect of when the rune of the unborn was removed from the Elden ring. It sounds to me like this great governs the rebirthing process of spirits. It also was the 2nd Great Rune removed, and it was done before the Shattering War. So what if when the rune of the unborn was removed, it was only then that those that live in death (other than Fia) came to be? I know this requires a little more speculation, but I believe it is possible. 🤔

@square-table-gaming your right. Let me clarify. I believe that it is a minor tree. The Haligtree was grown using Miquella's blood, who himself symbolizes growth and life. It was grown from a sapling. The shape and structure of what is seen of the Haligtree resembles the Erdtree or the Great Tree. In addition, i forgot which item it is, but there is an item that says something along the lines of, "seeds of the erdtree where thought to be impossible as the Erdtree was immortal and perfect." The golden seeds state that these seeds are from inor Erdtrees who were born when the Erdtree died. Most likely burned. Trees often release seeds when a fire happens. Miquella is the child of Marika who holds the Elden Ring which is tied to the Erdtree. The minor tree is the offspring of the Erdtree so what better way to usher in a new age is to form a new order from the child of the object of worship as the child of an person of worship and as a worshiped person themselves.

@@square-table-gaming My thoughts are the Halig Tree had to have had a parent tree. and the only tree shown to grow to that gigantic proportion is the Great tree, Erdtree and its offspring. As far as I see the only thing that makes sense is he took a sapling from the Erdtree grew it himself using his blood as water, so that at some point he could become one with the tree and grow into his adult form.

Sense or not after I fought the 2nd one of these I was over the sight of them. They're still overused to the point it feels lazy, lore implications or not.

Likely they're all converging from below the roots of the main Erdtree since it's burning.

Fish-like? More like… serpentine?

I don't think even with their shape that they would represent a serpent of any kind. The Lore doesn't match up. I've seen some people say amphibian and I can see that.

@@square-table-gaming I always thought that EB and the UTS are more like dragons, but I can see where people are coming from with the fish/aquatic perspective.

I beilieve whats happening with the ulcerated tree spirits is that they're created by the accumulation of erdtree burials that can no longer be reborn since the erdtree is no longer in it's physical form, existing as a spiritual enity and severed from the roots of the great tree. Thus, the souls are cursed and severed from grace, stagnating and manifesting as vengeful wraiths (as described by the wraith callers bell) and creating what looks more like a snake like amalgam of the bodies and roots.

I think the Erdtree becoming spiritual coincides with the Rune of Death being removed from the Elden Ring, so that's when Erdtree rebirth would've come about, not when it stopped working. The more reasonable explanation is that the Ulcerated Tree Spirits coincide with Godwyn's corpse breaking the Greattree roots away from the Erdtree (as described in Root Resin), which prevents the spirits from getting to the Erdtree and leading to the metaphorical indigestion.

wait but how will this theory explain the fact that you can kill 4 of these ulcerated spirits in lyndale alone? one on the way to the sewers and a combo of 3 at once in the approach to the elevator towards the grand lift of rold after you burn the erdtree, they will be in an ashy area that used to hold water and was unaccessible before
@square-table-gaming Жыл бұрын
We mention them in the video. The foot of the erdtree is a convergence point for its roots. Multiple spirits could work their way to the main tree, especially after it's been set ablaze.
