Steiner is a man who has no love for riff-raff, is overbearingly protective of the princess, and loves his country without hesitation. But is also a deceitfully big softie, calls his Black Mage buddy either Lord or Sir and frankly, while he has tough competition for being anyone's favorite character, he's definitely one of those characters that his absence would definitely be a huge detriment for the rest of cast's energy.
@IcyAuron5 ай бұрын
I disagree that he doesn't have the potential to be anyone's favorite character. He's #2 right behind Vivi, and still in the top ten FF characters. He's very well done.

Sounds like something clumsy, slowly trying to keep up with the story and situations running ahead. Yeah, that's Steiner.
It's Rusty! "RUSTY?! I AM THE CAPTAIN OF THE KNIGHTS OF PLUTO!" Stereotypical to a comedic level, but none can deny his friendship with Vivi. His devotion to Alexandria is commendable, though he will always be outwitted by Zidane during the early points of the game.

The man himself, Adelbert Steiner! I remember the wiki page back in the early 2000s attested that his name was possibly derived from Albert Einstein.

This is the guy who defeated Beatrix many years ago and had a high position. How many people can claim that?
@Zelink1085 ай бұрын
Which is never properly explained. Plus, he couldn’t even beat Beatrix when he is in your party when you fight her a third time and it wasn’t one on one. This is just bad writing.
@xOmniCloudx5 ай бұрын
He defeated an early career Beatrix, and he was several years older and far more experienced at that point. Her continued training led her to surpass him and everyone else after. It was most likely her motivation to begin with. The writing makes sense, you just didn't connect the pieces. @Zelink108 @Zelink108

@@xOmniCloudx What pieces? IX is so vague and unclear about everything. Also you do realize that Steiner himself also trained since then. Just admit that Beatrix is a Mary Sue who is far stronger than she should be.

This is Steiner, the guy who is basically a lot like previous chivalrous knight-like characters from the FF series or other notable JRPG's… Except that his behaviour is way more stereotypical and overplayed, and his schtick of unfunny slapstick, ranting about Zidane, screaming about Garnet and denial of Brahne's crazy behaviour will get old really, really fast. (Though the last example will also be largely Garnet's fault) The game tries to develop him… but it doesn't really do a good job of that.
@IcyAuron5 ай бұрын
What? Steiner has some of the best character growth of any character ever in a video game. His entire world view changes over the course of the game, and he goes from viewing the world in black and white to seeing nuance. Zidane was originally nothing more than a thief; evil. No one in FF except for Wakka has a more dramatic shift.

@Zelink1085 ай бұрын
@@IcyAuron You are overhyping it. He has to take part in Garnet’s dumb “return to Alexandria to just talk to mom” plot line, which renders the whole beginning of the game and trek to Lindblum completely pointless, not to mention all the death and destruction that is caused because of that dumb move. Steiner doesn’t even really witness any of the atrocities that Alexandria commits. Steiner's arc is not well done, funny how his character motivational poster is: "Dilemma". Which, in the original Japanese lines, is phrased as this: "Loyalty astray. When you devote your life to someone, is it really for your own sake? Tell me, what do people live for?" This, along with the rest of the character motivational posters of the cast, is presented as if they are concerned about such "deep questions", when in fact, this is something completely kindergarten-tier in writing. The theme of loyalty is not so bad in itself, but a character way too flawed such as Steiner is trying to reveal it that it just looks like one big mockery. Steiner's development would have been much better done if he actually went to Burmecia with Freya and saw what happened. Seriously, how much more interesting would it be to for Steiner to see what Beatrix and the other Alexandrian knights were doing and to see the drama and conflict between them? But no, instead all we get clichéd bullshit like this where Steiner takes part in Garnet's stupid "run back home" subplot that just makes things worse and then only hears about Alexandria's atrocities after the fact.
