Wait, the music sucks? Those songs have fairly good structures, good use of instruments, harmonies, accompaniments, sound balancing, chord progression! They're not repetitive, and they have a fairly good flow to them, even if the song looping is non-existant, which leads to the bgm just going quiet before the song starts over again. They even fit the overall tone of the levels, since it aims for cartoonish silliness instead of any sort of seriousness. Sure, some of the midi instruments sound a bit comical, in a non-intentional way, but overall the soundtrack is rather splendid.

Square Eyed Jak A. Yeah, there are few songs that I don't care for either. But that doesn't stop me from appreciating the quality and the effort they put into the music. B. Yeah, it really doesn't, but at the same time it still sounds fitting with its constantly flowing goofy melodies. The tone and style of the songs fit rather well for this game, while they wouldn't have worked in other Crash games. At the same time the music from other Crash games wouldn't have worked here either. It's kinda weird like that.

Square Eyed Jak Sure. I tend to see liking something and finding something as good, as two separate opinions. This is why I can most of the time still appreciate music, even if I wouldn't neccessarily like the song. This has probably something to do with the fact that I've studied Music Theory for quite some time now. For example, I think Bach's songs are revolutionary and rather well made, while at the same time I despise them greatly. This is probably because I hate playing his songs on piano: I don't enjoy the melodies nor do I find them enjoyable to play.

I bought the Xbox version of this game, and it surprisingly has much faster load times compared to the PS2 version, on top of having improved graphics. The gameplay isn't much different from what I can tell, though, but how ironic is it that a non-Sony platform is the definitive way to play a Crash game?

The GameCube version isn't very good. The graphics look awful, the loading screen just says the words loading without any animation or background, and the framerate is not only capped at 30 fps for most of the game, but often times it will go down to 10 fps and lower. (At least on my Wii, don't know if it performs better on an actual GameCube.)

The only songs that dont fit are Tornado Alley and Avalanche really. Still Avalanche is 80% a normal snow level before the chase in the end anyways, so it fits. And Solar Bowler have one of the best Crash songs ever.

Man, I just keep coming back to this video over and over again, specially since I'm now going for this game's Retroachievements (which implies not only just playing, but also sweating a bit) and I keep cursing at the game for its overuse of vehicles, terrible gameplay design decisions, and its strong desire to be like Crash Warped (LIKE CRAAAASH THREEEEEE) but failing miserably. I felt that this review was very bias, in many of the cases you don't even explain why it's bad. For example, the level design, sneaking power up, 2nd boss fight, and soundtrack. You just say it's boring or it sucks without rime or reason. You also forgot to mention that, most of the vehicle stages are half-half. Meaning that it's 50% platforming and 50% vehicle, I thought that was cool and different. Anyway, your explanation for the vehicle stages and loading screens were proper, I hated that submarine too, I could never get the relic because that thing is too slow. In the end, out of all your crash reviews, this one felt strongly bias.

If you're on a PS2 Slim Version and using the Greatest Hits/Platinum Version, most levels load in around 10-15 seconds. The PS2 Slim processor is slightly faster than the launch model (The Launch model is 293.3 MHz, while the PS2 Slim Processor is 299.7 MHz.) You really wouldn't think such a small increase would speed up loading times that much, but it actually does for quite a few PS2 games surprisingly...

This is the first Crash Bandicoot game to be released on other consoles that are not just Playstation. On the Xbox version of the game, there is a cheat where you can beat the game in full 100%. When you start a new game, you'll be told to type in a name. Type in "WOMBAT" and the cheat will be activated. This is also the first Crash Bandicoot game where Coco has combat moves when you play as her. This game was originally going to be a free roam game, but the concept of that idea was later scrapped and the idea wasn't used until Crash Twinsanity (2004) was released.

You used to be quite a swirler. I agree with the review in almost every respect. The only thing is that I think the fact that vehicles appear once is more of a plus than a minus to me. I know that in Crash we usually have several levels with one theme, but I don't see why that should be the case all the time. Overall the game is VERY poor. People feel sentimental about it because they take a nostalgic approach plus it's Crash. No matter how bad the game is, if it's a platformer with Crash in it, people will always be at least a little bit happy... it's like the new HP, which is a bad game, but it's HP so people are still excited about it. It's amazing how badly some PS2 games have aged. To think that Crash 4 or Gran Turismo 4 are from the same console.... such a difference. CB4 always looked like some amateur modder project to me. The last time I played it was over 20 years ago, but what I remember was the long load times, the repetitiveness of the levels and probably the only thing I liked were the spherical levels (as an idea mostly), which even graphically somehow looked better. I've seen reddit posts about how great music was in CB4... what?

The load times are quite better in the XBox version. They're definitely still too long, but not enough that you're bored with the game before you even get to play. Unfortunately my XBox copy freezes any time I try to load Tsunami, so I can't beat it without the Wombat cheat. So I'm stuck with the PS2 version.

The soundtrack is actually really fucking good in my opinion. There are a few examples of soundtracks not fitting the level, but in a lot of cases the soundtrack perfectly fits the level. I fucking love the soundtrack. It is very atmospheric and dark. Good shit. specifically the soundtracks of the water levels, H2 Oh no, arctic antics and crate balls of fire are really fucking good. In my opinion at least. No one gives a fuck about my opinion tho, so I don't know why I wrote this comment.

I have this game, the disc is broken, the loading time is killing me, and then after playing for ten seconds the whole game crashes. Counted 7 minutes to load the first level... Aargh, the pain!

Holy shit, this video was fucking hilarious. I still like this game today, while I am more aware of its flaws now, I still enjoy it. Luckily, the Gamecube's loading times are fast and not 30 seconds long. I also think the music is awesome. I agree some of the music doesn't fit the level (I was dying at the clips of the avalanches and the tornado), I think it was really good for the most part. Great review. Subscribed and can't wait for more :D

My opinion of this game is pretty biased. This was the first video game I ever played, and I spent most of my time playing it with my older sister. As you might guess, I have very fond memories of this game and I'll admit it kind of stops me from completely disliking this game.

Interesting review; very insightful. From a theoretical point of view, the music in this game certainly doesn't 'suck'. All opinions aside, Blythe & Joustra made short, albeit complex tracks for this game. For example, the song used in level 19 (Coral Canyon) is in ⁵/₄ time, which is considered an odd time signature.

I like this game. Xbox and GCN version of the game have faster load times, and somewhat better graphics. But, I respect your opinion.

Square Eyed Jak came off as a biased Crash 3 fanboy in this review. The part where he tries to credit Crash 3 as the first game to have a platforming Coco was just pitiful.

I'm actually very patient with loading times. i never complain The villains do look..... bad Tiny and N GIn and dingodile specifically but i had fun with this game. I as born mid 90s and loved the trilogy as a kid and when i got to play this on the gamecube i liked how even though it was a new home for crash it still played like crash. also Why change up teh formula so much in between 3 and 4? it worked fine so they played it safe. a questionable move but they did it as they didn't know what to do with crash yet on new consoles. i know its you opinion Jak but i thought this was at least a good game to introduce crash on the new console i'd give it an 8. but i still give Crash 1 8.3/10 Crash 2 9/10 Warped 10/10 Who knows after The N Sane Trilogy maybe they will remake this game. Not like N Sane Trilogy but change the levels up, bring back old scraped ones and tell a similar story. the story is ok Crunch is a cool character but i think after Crash's revival we need to see Crunch again in the future
