Hope you're all enjoying week 2 of Hawktober 2019! 🛹 QUICK NOTE on THPS2 iOS: The port isn't included here for a few reasons, mostly because it isn't available to download anymore. But it's also just got nothing to really say. There are so many of those ports onto iOS, even GTA San Andreas can be played on iOS so it's nothing special to talk about. So I opted to skip it in favor of more time being spent on lesser known titles. Thanks!

I felt the exact opposite of physical pain when unboxing the N-Gage copy. That felt good, I never like things being kept wrapped up, considering the whole point of games is for them to be played & enjoyed.
@gamerguy425
@gamerguy425 4 жыл бұрын
I don't mind that happening to extremely common/cheap games (sometimes SEALED copies can be more common than opened with unpopular games) or if it's used for review/documentation purpose but anything that's been sealed for more than 20 years or exceeds $100 in value should stay that way, it's like a relic at that point. Not to mention If the game inside also absolutely terrible shovelware than there is nothing to gain from opening it. Especially with ancient stuff like the 2600, I PHYSICALLY could not have ever seen that on store shelves, because I wasn't alive anywhere near then, so it means a lot to me to that those be preserved so that people in the future can see it in that in that state.
@QWERTYCommander
@QWERTYCommander 4 жыл бұрын
As a former N-gage collector, THPS1 N-gage is extremely common anyway. A non-sealed boxed copy is around $15 at most on eBay (IIRC I bought one for around $5 at a convention in 2016 but I'm not certain), and a factory sealed copy goes for around 30. If it were Elder Scrolls Shadowkey or something then yeah it'd be better to keep it that way (especially since you can pirate games on N-gage fairly easily) but THPS is nothing.

The N-Gage version of Tony Hawk will always hold a special significance to me as I was the Danish winner of a big event Nokia held back then and I in the end went to France to compete in the game. I didn't really get anywhere in that competition but it was a lot of fun and I even got myself an N-Gage before everyone else. Sadly the N-Gage itself stopped working after a couple of years but the bag that I got as part of the competition is still in use 15 years later. That's some goof craft xD

I remember our video game TV show covered lots of mobile games in 2000s. I recall being very jealous that we didn't have phones that could play them. Now that I think about that time, concept of digital storefronts was unknown to me at the time. Seeing how some are lost to time, makes me fear upcoming streaming services like Stadia and subscirption services like Game Pass, preservation is going to be even more difficult.

Tony Hawks Shred Session was actually quite fun. It has missions (or sessions) with kinda like classic mode tasks (combo, skate , highscore, secret tape) as well as endless (runnner) mode where you basically earn money by doing tricks. The only thing you were spending money for were tricks and new locations, but I remember enjoying this game a lot

Anyone remember back when Project 8 was about to come out - the game's website? It was a Flash thing, Tony would skate in, say the name of the game and skate out. Back in 2006 it was a big deal to see an FMV inside a website so I distinctly remember it, corny as it was.

So, the briefly-mentioned lost mobile port of THPS1 actually does have some more info on it. Jeff Gerstmann reviewed it on Gamespot when it was new, and there's also some info on it in the book "Tony Hawk's Gaming Domination" -The port was renamed to "Tony Hawk's Pro Skater: 3D Mobile Edition" -It was released at around the same time as American Wasteland -The levels had additional goals, such as higher scores and combos -Had online leaderboard support -Since some phone d-pads didn't allow for diagonal input, tricks that used diagonals in the original were instead done by pushing two directions in sequence like a special trick -Almost all copyrighted content was completely removed. No licensed music whatsoever, and every skater besides Tony is replaced by likenesses of the game's programmers (whether they're the programmers of the port or the original I don't know) IIRC it was released exclusively on Verizon's discontinued subscription-only V-cast service, and if that's true then it's absolutely lost to time. Also, unrelated but I'm surprised you didn't mention that the N-Gage port soundtrack slipped in the uncensored version of Euro-Barge.

As a kid I wanted an N Gage just for THPS and Crash Nitro Kart. I had other versions of each, but at the time I had no portable device that could emulate PS1 games, and while the NG version of CNK was based on the GBA version (that I own) and its simplified track layouts, it did get an upgrade from the flat 2D tracks seen on the GBA to 3D terrain. Plus, the N Gage version includes the extended soundtrack that was previously exclusive to the Japanese GBA release. Alas, at the time my parents deemed me too young for a cell phone, so I may never see an N Gage game in person.

Unfortunately they stopped updating it and eventually stopped carrying it in the store. It had a different soundtrack, but at the time you could "jailbreak" your iPod with Cidia and download a 'broken' version with the original soundtrack! I thought that was really cool.

Been watching this guys videos for 3 days now. Not sure why. But I'm thinking my 13 year old self found a man who is stuck in his 13 year old body to play 13 year old games.

You missed pro skater 2 for iPhone. That port was THE shit, i played ist for hours. It was just like pro skater 2 and the controls worked suprisingly well.

God, I actually owned an N-Gage once upon a time. God, what a weird little thing it was. Too bad mine was ruined b/c I was a complete dumbass and went swimming with it since my swim trunks had pockets. Oh well, neat little system anyway.

You never gave a score for the N-Gage port, Jak. You seemed fairly happy with it, what would your score have been?

Avoid publically scoring mobile games because even if something is good, it'll still end up with low score. But THPS on N-Gage would probably get a 4/10.

What did you use to emulate/play all of these games? I found them all online (except American Wasteland) but am a bit clueless with what to do now.

Also, not sure if you know (you probably do) but there's an old Underground 2 port onto flash. www.y8.com/games/tony_hawks_underground_2 It's such a nothing game but it's kinda interesting. I think there were flash versions of other games too but those are lost to time.
